Recall Alert: 2013 Ram 1500 Trucks

Statement: Electronic Stability Control

July 3, 2013 , Auburn Hills, Mich. -

Chrysler Group LLC will recall approximately 69,000 4x4 pickup trucks worldwide to update their electronic stability control (ESC) software.

Chrysler Group received a small number of reports from dealers who noted ESC warning-lamp activation on 2013 Ram 1500 trucks equipped with four-wheel drive. A warning lamp indicates ESC is disabled.

Chrysler Group is unaware of any related injuries or accidents.

An ensuing investigation discovered the condition may inadvertently occur when the transfer case position is changed immediately before the ignition is turned off. Software was modified to prevent ESC deactivation under such circumstances.

The total number of affected vehicles comprises approximately 45,900 in the U.S.; 21,000 in Canada; 1,400 in Mexico and 770 outside the NAFTA region.

Chrysler Group will notify affected customers. Questions or concerns can be addressed by calling 1-800-853-1403.

DETROIT — Chrysler is recalling 45,961 of its Ram 1500 pickups for an electronic stability control problem.

Quote:
Chrysler says the ESC -- which uses computer-controlled selective braking to help the driver keep control in a too-fast corner or swerve -- in the pickups may not go on when the truck is started. While it is sometimes disabled in special circumstances, it is supposed to be on by default and is generally a safety risk if it is off.

ESC has been required since 2012 on all cars and light-duty trucks.

The recall covers Ram 1500 standard-duty trucks with four-wheel drive that were built from June 26, 2012, through last Feb. 5.

Chrysler says the problem is in the ESC system's software, which will be updated in the recall, and that it has no reports of crashes or injuries linked to the issue.
