Waymo's Self-driving Service

Google's self-driving car offshoot, Waymo, has become one of the first companies to test fully autonomous, driverless cars on public roadways in the United States. Waymo has released a new video of its autonomous Chrysler Pacifica vans ferrying passengers around the Pheonix metropolitan area without a driver at the helm. The automaker has been offering free rides to Phoenix area residents in the test cars for about a year now, but a Waymo employee would be in the driver's seat in case anything went awry. Now the company is offering those rides without a driver up front, though an employee will still be in the back seat ready to push a "pull over" button should anything go wrong. Those who use the Waymo early rider program that has been in place the past year will soon have the option to order a fully self-driving Pacifica through the smartphone app. Additionally, Waymo will one day introduce a driverless taxi service in the Phoenix area that will be open to the general public. And as long as the law permits, the service may one day expand outside of Arizona.

So whereas many automakers are looking to develop and sell self-driving cars to customers, Waymo is looking to develop the tech and roll it out as part of a wider, mass transportation initiative. There's still a long way to go (it only began testing in Detroit recently, where it will acquire cold and inclement weather data this winter), but you might want to get used to hearing the word 'Waymo'.

AutoNation To Service Fleet

Waymo Teams Up With AutoNation To Service Fleet Of Autonomous Vehicles

November 13th, 2017

In another move that hints at how close self-driving cars may be to reality, Google/Alphabet-owned Waymo has announced a deal with AutoNation, the largest auto dealer in the US, to service its fleet of vehicles. The multiyear arrangement means that AutoNation will now be responsible for the maintenance and repair of the increasing number of Waymo’s Chrysler Pacifica hybrid minivans that are on the roads.

Quote:
John Krafcik, Waymo’s chief executive, alluded to the relationship being another key step on the path from test rides to public adoption. In a statement, he said, “AutoNation will help assure that Waymo vehicles are always in top condition as we bring fully self-driving cars to the public.”
Safety is paramount

Maintenance of the fleet of vehicles is of increasing importance to Waymo. The vehicles undergo thousands of hours of testing and need to be permanently road-ready for this. As the vehicles themselves are destined for public service, then safety is of paramount importance, and any vehicle failures could be catastrophic.

In addition last month’s reveal of how Waymo is aiming to introduce a self-driving ride share service before the end of 2017, this news indicates that the company is inching ever closer to taking things beyond the test phase and into mainstream usage.

It seems like the race to be first to market with a fleet of self-driving vehicles is being lead by Waymo. When you combine this announcement with the news that Alphabet also invested $1 billion in ride-sharing company Lyft, Waymo’s position seems strong.

FCA US LLC Set to Deliver Thousands of Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Minivans

FCA US LLC Set to Deliver Thousands of Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Minivans to Waymo's Self-driving Service

Expanded delivery of vehicles signifies commitment to support the launch of the world’s first driverless ride-hailing service
Vehicle delivery begins in late 2018 with Pacifica Hybrid minivans to be deployed across multiple U.S. cities

January 30, 2018 , Auburn Hills, Mich. -

Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivan equipped with Waymo’s fully self-driving technology

FCA US LLC announced today an agreement to supply thousands of Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans to Waymo to support the launch of the world’s first driverless ride-hailing service.

FCA previously delivered 100 Pacifica Hybrid minivans, adapted for self-driving, to Waymo during the second half of 2016 and an additional 500 in 2017. This first-of-its-kind collaboration between Waymo and FCA engineers enabled the teams to design a self-driving vehicle built on a mass production platform.

“In order to move quickly and efficiently in autonomy, it is essential to partner with like-minded technology leaders,” said Sergio Marchionne, Chief Executive Officer, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V. “Our partnership with Waymo continues to grow and strengthen; this represents the latest sign of our commitment to this technology.”

Waymo is set to open its autonomous ride-hailing service to the public beginning in Phoenix this year. The additional Pacifica Hybrid minivans will be used to support Waymo as it expands its service to more cities across the United States. Waymo has officially tested its technology in 25 cities across the U.S., including Atlanta, San Francisco, Metro Detroit, Phoenix and Kirkland, Washington.

“With the world’s first fleet of fully self-driving vehicles on the road, we’ve moved from research and development, to operations and deployment,” said John Krafcik, CEO of Waymo. “The Pacifica Hybrid minivans offer a versatile interior and a comfortable ride experience, and these additional vehicles will help us scale.”

Last November, Waymo began test-driving a fleet of Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans on public roads without a driver at the wheel. With this technical milestone, the hybrid minivans became the first vehicle to attain Level 4 autonomy, a classification determined by the Society of Automotive Engineers.

The self-driving Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans are the most advanced vehicles on the road today, equipped with Waymo’s powerful hardware suite. The self-driving minivans are also running Waymo’s self-driving software, which has been honed with more than 4 million miles of on-road testing, and billions of miles in simulation.

This first-of-its-kind collaboration brought engineers from FCA and Waymo together to integrate Waymo’s fully self-driving system into the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivan, leveraging each company’s individual strengths and resources. The minivan’s electrical, powertrain, chassis and structural systems make an ideal vehicle to accommodate Waymo’s self-driving technology.

About Waymo

Waymo is the self-driving technology company with a mission to make it safe and easy for people and things to move around. We’re determined to improve transportation for people around the world, building on software and sensor technology developed in Google’s labs since 2009. In October 2015, we achieved the world’s first fully self-driving trip on public roads, in a car without a steering wheel or pedals. Waymo is building the most experienced driver with over 4 million miles driven on public roads across 25 U.S. cities, and billions of miles of simulation testing each year.

Waymo’s Self Driving Taxi Service Will be Up and Running This Year

Waymo’s Self Driving Taxi Service Will be Up and Running This Year

Feb 21, 2018

Waymo has been given the green light by the Arizona Department of Transportation to operate a self-driving taxi service in the state starting this year.

According to Bloomberg, the state of Arizona has allowed Waymo to operate as a Transportation Network Company, which will enable it to operate a taxi service in Phoenix and the surrounding area with its self-driving Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans. Just like other ride-hailing services, the Waymo taxi will be called using a smartphone app.

“As we continue to test-drive our fleet of vehicles in greater Phoenix, we’re taking all the steps necessary to launch our commercial service this year,” a Waymo spokesman said in an emailed statement to Bloomberg.

Waymo has been testing its vans since 2016, and began an early rider program in Arizona late last year. The free pilot program allowed users to call the self-driving Waymo van using an app, although it was limited to a 100-mile square radius.

When the actual Waymo taxi service opens up for business later this year, it will be limited by the number of vehicles in its fleet. The company currently operates around 600 vehicles, but recently placed an order with Fiat Chrysler for “thousands” more Pacifica Hybrids. It’s not yet clear how much a ride in a self-driving Waymo van will cost, but it’s believed it will be comparable with an Uber or Lyft trip.

FCA US LLC Expands Partnership With Waymo

FCA US LLC Expands Partnership With Waymo

Up to 62,000 additional Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans will join Waymo’s driverless fleet, starting in late 2018
Companies beginning discussions about use of Waymo self-driving technology, including potentially through licensing, in a FCA-manufactured vehicle available to retail customers

May 31, 2018 , Auburn Hills, Mich. -

FCA US LLC and Waymo today announced they will expand their partnership with an agreement to add up to 62,000 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans to Waymo’s self-driving fleet. This venture builds upon a previous commitment, announced in January, to deliver thousands of vehicles to Waymo’s driverless transportation service. Vehicle delivery is expected to begin in late 2018.

FCA US and Waymo also announced today that they are beginning discussions about the use of Waymo self-driving technology, including potentially through licensing, in a FCA-manufactured vehicle available to retail customers.

“FCA is committed to bringing self-driving technology to our customers in a manner that is safe, efficient and realistic,” said Sergio Marchionne, Chief Executive Officer, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V. “Strategic partnerships, such as the one we have with Waymo, will help to drive innovative technology to the forefront.”

Currently, Waymo is the only company with a fleet of fully self-driving cars, with no one in the driver seat, on public roads. Later this year, Waymo will launch the world’s first self-driving transportation service, allowing the public to use Waymo’s app to request a vehicle.

“Waymo's goal from day one has been to build the world’s most experienced driver and give people access to self-driving technology that will make our roads safer,” said John Krafcik, CEO of Waymo. “We're excited to deepen our relationship with FCA that will support the launch of our driverless service, and explore future products that support Waymo's mission.”

FCA and Waymo first announced their partnership in May 2016. The first-of-its-kind collaboration brought engineers from FCA and Waymo together to integrate Waymo’s fully self-driving system into the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivan, leveraging each company’s individual strengths and resources. Since then, FCA and Waymo engineers have continued working together to support Waymo’s expansion and to evolve the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivan with self-driving technology.

The self-driving Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans are one of the most advanced vehicles on the road today, equipped with Waymo’s self-driving system, including a powerful hardware suite and software honed over 6 million miles of on-road testing.

To date, FCA has delivered 600 Pacifica Hybrid minivans to Waymo.
