Question Third Brake Light

Hey everyone, figured I would post here before I do anything stupid. My high center mount brake light has stopped working. All other lights work fine and I am not receiving any codes. There is no voltage at the connector. In lieu of just attempting to run a wire down to the left taillight and jumping it in to see if that works, do you have any suggestions? I'm assuming that this runs on 12 volts? Was thinking about replacing the brake switch but I am not having any other issues.

Third Brake Light

Brake Switch 1

Brake Switch 2

Was anyone able to resolve this problem?

Thanks

Doug

Welcome Doug

Great to see you have used our Forum to answer your own question. Really if I'm correct you have to replace that lamp, nothing else usually works. The lamp is expensive as you might have already noted. Good Luck!

Thanks Rick. I bought a light from a salvage yard but I still cannot get either light to work. The yard did guarantee that the light works but I have not tested it manually. Do you know if the led third brake should be 12 volts? I don't want to connect it to a 12v source and cause damage to anything. I can't find anywhere in the manual where it lists voltages on the circuits.

Well if there really are bulbs inside that could be replaced LINK they are regular 12V so yes you could check out that used lamp from the battery. Some say the replacement of the brake switch can cause this lamp not to work too, but most have to replace the lamp. Hopefully this will correct the issue. Let us know how it all works out to help other in the future. Again Good Luck!

I tested both lights by creating jumpers and linking to the battery. I was able to verify both were good and would light. Seeing that I didn't have voltage at the third brake light connector, I ran a wire down through the grommet going to the back of the vehicle and down the left side toward the jack. I then tested for the brake light wire with a multimeter and spliced in the cable I just ran. Once spliced I was able to confirm that now I did have voltage to the wire out of the back of the hatch, were the third brake light is. I then cut the power wire for the connector and then connected the new wire I ran. Once connected I finally had a working taillight. I still have no idea what or when it broke.

Good job Doug! I also encountered a wire that has powdery or mold thing developed inside that caused irregular voltage.
