Carjacker, Victims Say They Didn't Know About Cash Stash
$322K Found In Crashed SUV
October 25, 2011
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -- A California man sentenced to eight years in prison for his role in a carjacking says he didn't know there was $322,000 in cash stashed in the car.
German Martinez-Rivera of Fontana, Calif., was arrested crawling out of a ravine in February after a high-speed chase. Police said he had crashed a Dodge Nitro he had stolen from two women at Fruita’s Go-Fer Foods.
In the SUV, police found $322,280 in cash in seven large bundles hidden under the spare tire in the trunk, according to the Grand Junction Sentinel.
The newspaper said authorities believed the cash was drug money.
The victims, Jacqueline Aranda and Maria Aranda, told police they also knew nothing about the money inside their car. Jacqueline Aranda told police she had been traveling with Maria to assist another sister with "voodoo" treatments for an illness in Denver, the newspaper reported.
The Sentinel reported that in 2006, Jacqueline Aranda was stopped driving a vehicle crossing into California from Mexico that contained more than 48 pounds of cocaine and about $20,000 in cash concealed in the dashboard. Maria Aranda was caught by law enforcement in 2010 concealing a person in her vehicle during a border crossing, the newspaper reported.
