2011 Ford Explorer: 25 MPG

2011 Ford Explorer Gets 25 MPG, Ups Fuel Economy 25%

Posted: Dec 08, 2010

The 2011 Ford Explorer boasts impressive fuel economy ratings, and the automaker opted to get the word out via social networking rather than a traditional press release. Ford made the announcement via the Ford Explorer Facebook page: “It's official, the 2011 Ford Explorer gets an EPA estimated 25 highway MPG - which is Best in Class for a V6 and 25% more fuel efficient than the current model.”

Those are impressive numbers for an affordable midsize SUV. “The full figures, according to Ford, are 17 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, for a combined rating of 20 mpg. That's for the 2011 Explorer fitted with a 290-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6,” says Green Car Reports. “The old Explorer, by comparison, was rated at 14 mpg city, 20 mpg highway (hence the 25-percent improvement) when fitted with rear-wheel-drive, or 13 mpg, 19 mpg with four-wheel-drive.”

Sales appear to be up as well. “Last Monday Ford began production of its all-new 2011 Explorer in order to keep up with the 15,000 pre-orders that had doubled initial estimates,” according to Left Lane News. “This rating puts the Explorer at the top of its class for V6 fuel economy, beating the more off road-oriented 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee by one city and two highway mpg.”

Clearly the updated powertrain is a hit with the current demand for vehicles with improved fuel economy, and Ford hopes to boost sales by meeting that expectation. “Ford was selling more than 400,000 Explorers per year in the 1990s but has sold just 50,588 through the first 11 months of this year,” says the Detroit Free Press. “The company believes that the new version of the vehicle will boost those numbers next year.”
