Recall Alert: 2014 Chevy Malibu
GM's latest vehicle recall affects 2014 Chevy Malibu sedans equipped with the 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and stop/start technology.
On affected Malibus, the brakes can lose vacuum assist if and when the hydraulic boost assist is disabled. This will cause the "Service Brake Assist" and "Check Engine" lights to illuminate.
The problem could require the driver to apply greater force to the brake pedal, and could cause longer stopping distances, which in turn could lead to an accident.
This recall has nothing to do with another brake recall for the same cars, which was issued on May 8th, 2014. In that action, GM sought to repair vehicles in which it had installed the wrong brake rotors, which led to decreased braking performance.
GM has come up with a fix for this new problem in the form of a software update to the Electronic Brake Control Module. GM will notify customers on this recall, which is being managed by VIN (Vehicle Identification Number). Courtesy transportation will be provided for all customers who need it. The repair will be done for customers at no charge.
