Recall Alert: BMW
2012 BMW 3-Series Models Recalled
BMW has announced the recall of 7,600 model year 2012 3-Series models, built between October 19, 2011 and March 18, 2012. At issue is compliance with federal safety standards that limit the downward travel of a vehicle’s front seat headrest to 25 millimeters or less.
Testing by BMW has revealed that certain 2012 3-Series models are equipped with headrests that can be raised to a height that exceeds this limit, forcing the automaker to issue a stop sale and recall of the affected vehicles.
In the event of a crash, with a headrest is the full upright position, downward movement in excess of 25 millimeters may increase the risk of personal injury. No accidents or injuries relating to this defect have been documented to date.
BMW will inspect and repair these models as necessary, at no charge to owners. The repair procedure involves fitting a clamp to the headrest post on both front seats to limit the amount of upward travel available.
The automaker will contact affected owners directly, and the recall is expected to begin later this month. Consumers with questions or concerns can contact BMW Customer Relations at (800) 525-7417, or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at (888) 327-4236.
