Recall Alert: BMW

BMW Recalls 2005-2007 7-Series To Fix Software Glitch

BMW is conducting a voluntary recall of certain 2005 through 2007 7-Series sedans to fix a software problem that may allow the doors to open, even when they appear to be closed.

A notice on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website puts the number of vehicles potentially affected at 7,485. Vehicles involved are equipped with both of the following options: Comfort Access and Soft Close Automatic. Affected vehicles were built from August 23, 2004 through September 3, 2007.

The year and models involved in the recall include:

2006-2007 BMW 750i, 750Li

The problem

The NHTSA bulletin describes the problem this way: “Due to a software problem, the doors appear to be closed and latched, but, in fact, may inadvertently open.” This may occur “due to road or driving conditions or occupant contact with the door.”

In the event the door suddenly opens, occupants may be ejected from the vehicle or be at increased risk of injury in a crash.

As The Detroit News reports, the recall comes five years after BMW recalled vehicles in Japan for the same problem and five years after the NHTSA initially asked BMW about the issue.

In documentation (PDF) BMW filed with the NHTSA, the automaker said it is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this condition.

What BMW will do

BMW plans to notify owners to take their vehicles to a BMW dealer for an update of the software. The repair will be performed at no charge. The BMW safety recall is expected to begin in November 2012.

In the meantime, owners of 2005 through 2007 BMW 7-Series sedans with any questions or concerns may contact BMW at 1-800-525-7417.

Alternatively, owners of vehicles involved in the campaign may contact NHTSA’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or go to Home | Safercar -- National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Reference the NHTSA campaign ID No. 12V504000.
