Recall Alert: Honda (2)

Over a half million Honda Accords recalled for power steering fire risk

10/02/2012

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced a recall of over 572,000 Honda Accord sedans over a concern that a high pressure power steering fluid line could leak and lead to an engine bay fire – adding these vehicles to the 52,615 Acura TL models recalled earlier this year for the same issue.

This new Honda Accord power steering fluid line recall pertains to those vehicles from the 2003 through 2007 model years that were equipped with the V6 engine option. In these Honda sedans, a combination of high engine bay temperatures and high power steering fluid temperatures could lead to premature deterioration of a pressurized power steering fluid line. Should this line deteriorate to the point where it begins to leak, the power steering fluid spraying around the engine bay could come in contact with something very hot (like any portion of the exhaust system). When this happens, there could be an excessive amount of smoke coming from under the hood and in the worst case situations – an engine bay fire could occur. 573,147 examples of the 2003-2007 Honda Accord are affected in the US alone.

Honda will begin notifying the owners of these 573k+ V6-powered Accord sedans beginning on October 26th 2012 to let them know that their vehicle is included in the recall. This recall formally began in June 2012 for the 2007 and 2008 Acura TL but the recent addition of the Honda Accord from 2003-2007 comes with a bit of a hitch, as Honda does not currently have the replacement parts for over a half million vehicles. Honda expects to have the replacement parts in the early portions of the 2013 calendar year so when owners first get these recall notices, they will be asked to bring their vehicle in for inspection when the first portion of the recall is sent out in late October while those vehicles that are exhibiting problems will be contacted again in early 2013 to get the problem fixed. However, those owners of the affected Honda Accord V6 sedans who believe that they may already have a power steering leak are encouraged to contact their local dealership. Owners can also call Honda customer service at 1-800-999-1009 in reference to recall number S59 for the investigation portion of the recall and number S60 pertains to the repair of the faulty hose once the parts are available.

Honda recalls over 260k CR-V SUVs over door fire concerns

10/07/2012

Honda has announced it is recalling model-year 2002 to 2006 CR-V crossovers due to a dangerous fire risk. The recall notice states that the vehicle’s driver-side power window switch may fail or melt. Consequently, the failed switch may overheat, smoke, and result in a fire. According to Honda, the problem occurs when rain or other liquids enter the driver’s open window, thus damaging the master power switch.

Due to the fire risk, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is advising owners to park their CR-V outside until the recall has been performed. The recall affects 268,655 SUVs manufactured from February 19, 2002 through July 28, 2006. Although there have been no injuries or crashes associated with the defect, Honda says that four fires have been reported.

Honda will begin notifying customers of the recall on, or about November 2, 2012. Honda dealers will inspect and repair the switches, free of charge. In the meantime, owners may contact Honda at 1-800-999-1009 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236. The NHTSA Campaign ID Number is 12V486000.

No stranger to substantial recalls, over 166,000 model-year 2012 CR-Vs were involved in a door latch recall in July. Stemming from a cable mechanism failure, the door lock issue may result in a door opening while driving or during a crash, according to the NHTSA.

Additionally, Honda recalled model-year 2002 to 2004 CR-V vehicles in March due to lighting concerns. In particular, affected CR-Vs and Pilot SUVs contained a headlight switch defect that may cause the low beams to malfunction.

Unfortunately for Honda, Saturday’s recall is the third in just a week for the automaker. The announcement comes two days after the automaker recalled over 820,000 Honda Civic compact cars and Honda Pilot SUVs over a headlight issue. The safety recall was an expansion of the March recall, bringing the total to nearly 1.4 million vehicles. Earlier this week, Honda issued a recall for nearly 600,000 model-year 2003 to 2007 Accord sedans due to a power steering hose defect as well.

Despite the numerous recalls, the Honda CR-V remains a top-selling vehicle in the U.S. In fact, the CR-V has sold over 213,000 units this year, a year-to-date change of 32.5 percent. The popular SUV is on pace to crush last year’s sales total of 218,373 and has already surpassed its 2010 total of 203,714 units sold.
