Recall Alert: Latest Toyota MAJOR RECALL
Today Toyota announced another major recall. This one affects some 960,000 vehicles in the U.S.
Technically speaking, there are two recalls at work here. The bigger of the two affects the 2010-2014 Prius, which accounts for 700,000 of the total number of vehicles included in the recall. The second recall affects the 2012 Toyota RAV4, 2012-2013 Toyota Tacoma, and 2012-2013 Lexus RX 350.
Though the two recalls are unrelated, both involve software glitches that could present serious problems for drivers:
According to a press release, the current settings for the Prius' software could allow certain transistors to overheat, activating warning lights and forcing the vehicle into failsafe mode. Worse, Toyota says that "In rare circumstances, the hybrid system might shut down while the vehicle is being driven, resulting in the loss of power and the vehicle coming to a stop". Not good.
On the RAV4, Tacoma, and RX 350, there appears to be a problem with the circuitry that "can cause the Vehicle Stability Control, Anti-lock Brake, and Traction Control functions to intermittently turn off". (Though Toyota is quick to point out that even without those safety systems in place, standard braking will operate as normal.)
The solution to both problems is a software update. Neither patch is available just yet, but Toyota says owners will receive notice by mail when they are. At that time, owners will be able to take their vehicles to Toyota and Lexus dealers for the free update.
