Recall Alert: Mazda 3 and Mazda 6
Mazda will recall some 2014-2015 Mazda 3 and Mazda 6 sedans for an issue with some new fuel-saving technology.
Vehicles equipped with 2.5-liter four-cylinder engines and Mazda's new i-ELOOP (Regenerative Engine Braking System) could have a faulty power control module (PCM). The PCM may incorrectly determine that there is a failure of the system's energy storage capacitor when driving in heavy rain or through deep puddles.
Under these conditions, the generator belt may get wet and slip, which can be incorrectly identified by the PCM as a failure of the energy storage capacitor. If the system believes that the storage capacitor has failed, it will prohibit the charging system from operating and illuminate the "Charging System Warning Light."
If the condition persists, eventually engine power loss, loss of windshield wipers and power steering assist, and ultimately engine shutdown will occur without warning. This could result in a crash.
Mazda has come up with a software update to address this problem. It will be performed at no charge to vehicle owners. Those owners that have already paid for repairs can contact Mazda about a reimbursement.
