Recall Alert: Volkswagen

2014-2015 Volkswagen Beetle, Golf, GTI, Jetta, Passat Recalled To Fix Fuel Leak

Volkswagen has issued a recall for nearly 38,000 Beetle, Beetle Convertible, Golf, GTI, Jetta, and Passat vehicles from the 2014 and 2015 model years. According to documents posted at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's website (PDF), those vehicles may suffer from fuel leaks, which could cause them to catch fire.

The problem is linked to a fuel rail manufactured by Benteler de Mexico in Puebla, Mexico. NHTSA reports that due to some faulty soldering, a cap on the rail may not seal properly, allowing fuel to leak into the engine compartment. That, in turn, increases the risk of fire.

The recall includes the following makes and models:

2014-2015 Volkswagen Beetle and Beetle Convertible vehicles built between March 31, 2014 and November 27, 2014
2015 Volkswagen Golf vehicles built between July 1, 2014 and November 20, 2014
2015 Volkswagen GTI vehicles built between July 1, 2014 and November 20, 2014
2014-2015 Volkswagen Jetta vehicles built between March 28, 2014 and November 24, 2014 (recalled for headlight problems yesterday)
2014-2015 Volkswagen Passat vehicles built between April 7, 2014 and November 18, 2014

All told, the recall affects some 37,979 vehicles registered in the U.S. Volkswagen says that in cars with the flaw, drivers may notice a fuel smell in the vehicle, and a warning light on the dashboard may indicate a drop in fuel pressure. Volkswagen knows of no accidents, injuries, or deaths linked to the problem.

Volkswagen began notifying dealers about the recall this month, but the company won't mail recall notices to owners until January. After receiving those notices, owners will be able to take their vehicles to Volkswagen dealers, who will replace the fuel rails, free of charge.

If you own one of the vehicles listed above and have further questions, you're encouraged to contact Volkswagen customer service at 800-822-8987 and ask about recall #24Bi. Alternately, you can call NHTSA at 888-327-4236 and ask about safety campaign 14V809000.
