Feds Probe Complaints of Fuel Spills in 2007-'08 Jeep Wrangler

Aug 31, 2010

* NHTSA is looking into consumer complaints of fuel spills in an estimated 223,000 2007-'08 Jeep Wrangler vehicles.
* There have been 217 complaints so far.
* Chrysler is quick to say it is an investigation, not a recall.

WASHINGTON — The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is looking into consumer complaints of fuel spills during refueling in an estimated 223,000 2007-'08 Jeep Wrangler vehicles.

NHTSA's Office of Defect Investigations has opened a preliminary evaluation into 217 complaints alleging fuel spills from the filler port during the refueling process. Such a move by NHTSA is sometimes the precursor to a recall.

"This condition generally occurs when the fuel tank is filled to the full or nearly full level and the gas pump automatically shuts or clicks off," said NHTSA in its defect investigations summary. "Consumers report that the spilled fuel can splash on the person fueling the vehicle, or on the side of the vehicle and the ground."

There have been no injuries, fires or fatalities linked to the probe.

Chrysler issued the following statement about the federal investigation into the 2007-'08 Wrangler: "Chrysler Group LLC is cooperating fully with NHTSA regarding an investigation into 2007-'08 model-year Jeep Wrangler vehicles. It is an investigation, not a recall. The Jeep Wrangler meets or exceeds all applicable federal safety standards."
