$1.4 million in cocaine seized at Hidalgo bridge

A 22-year-old Mission man is behind bars after he allegedly tried to smuggle more than $1.4 million dollars worth of cocaine into the United States.

U.S. Customs & Border Protection (CBP) officers arrested Alberto De Luna on federal drug smuggling charges at 12:06 p.m. Tuedsay.

Court records released Thursday show De Luna pulled up to the Hidalgo-Reynosa International Bridge in a 2009 Dodge Nitro.

De Luna claimed he was picking up signs for his boss in Reynosa.

Customs officers saw the signs inside the SUV but searched the vehicle and found 20 packages with 44 pounds of cocaine hidden in a secret compartment.

Authorities estimate the drugs are worth more than $1.4 million dollars on the streets.

De Luna allegedly told investigators that he was supposed to drop off the SUV at the Auto Zone in Hidalgo.

The 22-year-old Mission appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Dorina Ramos on Wednesday morning.

Judge Ramos denied bond for De Luna until a Monday morning hearing.
