September 14, 2010 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - Nearly two decades ago, Jeep invented the premium sport-utility vehicle (SUV) segment with the introduction of the Jeep Grand Cherokee. More than 4 million sales later, Jeep improves the formula and hits the sweet spot of Jeep 4x4 capability and on-road refinement with the all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee delivers premium on-road performance while maintaining the Jeep brand’s legendary four-wheel-drive, torque-on-demand two-speed transfer case and towing capability. It also offers improved fuel economy (up to 23 mpg) and a world-class interior cabin.

The all-new Quadra-Lift™ air suspension system delivers legendary Jeep off-road capability along with the new Selec-Terrain™ system which allows the driver to choose the drive system that best matches on- or off-road driving conditions. New front and rear independent suspension systems deliver premium on-road handling and comfort.

“With the all-new 2011 Grand Cherokee, Jeep has created the benchmark, premium SUV,” said Mike Manley, President and Chief Executive Officer — Jeep Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. “Unique innovations such as our new Quadra-Lift air suspension system and Selec-Terrain traction control systems separate Jeep from the crowd and take the new Grand Cherokee to the next level of 4x4 capability. The new generation of the iconic Jeep Grand Cherokee delivers the perfect blend of on-road refinement, superb craftsmanship, world-class design, improved fuel economy, innovative features and legendary, real-world capability.”

Legendary Capability

The all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee offers the new Quadra-Lift air suspension system. The Quadra-Lift air suspension system features five height settings for optimum ride performance:

* Normal Ride Height (NRH): 8.1 inches of clearance offers improved fuel economy and improved aerodynamics during on-road driving
* Off-road 1: Lifts the vehicle an additional 1.3 inches for added height in clearing obstacles (9.4 inches)
* Off-road 2: Delivers legendary Jeep off-road capability and provides an additional 2.6 inches of height for 10.7 inches of ground clearance
* Park Mode: Lowers the vehicle 1.5 inches from NRH for easy ingress/egress and roof rack loading. NRH and Park mode are driver-selectable, giving the driver control over vehicle ride height
* Aero Mode: Lowers the vehicle .6 inches from NRH. Aero mode is controlled by vehicle speed and adjusts for optimal performance and fuel economy

Quadra-Lift adds up to 4.1 inches of lift span that is supported by four-corner air springs that provide a cushioned, premium ride. Quadra-Lift operates automatically, or may be controlled manually via console controls.

In addition to the Quadra-Lift air suspension system, the all-new Selec-Terrain traction control system lets customers choose the off-road setting for the optimum experience on all terrains. This feature electronically coordinates up to 12 different powertrain, braking and suspension systems, including throttle control, transmission shift, transfer case, traction control and electronic stability control (ESC).

The Selec-Terrain’s control dial allows the driver to choose from five driving conditions in order to achieve the best driving experience on all terrains:

* Sand/Mud: Traction control and Quadra-Lift operate with sensitive response to wheel spin, and torque is tuned for optimal performance
* Sport: Provides enhanced on-road "fun-to-drive" capability
* Auto: Automatically adapts to any on- or off-road situation
* Snow: Vehicle traction adjusts for ultimate performance over snow-covered roads
* Rock: Quadra-Lift air suspension system raises to maximum height (10.7 inches) and the transfer case, differentials, and throttle coordinate to provide low-speed control

Selec-Terrain, coupled with the all-new Quadra-Lift air suspension system, offers drivers an adjustable suspension span that delivers world-class capability.

With the front air dam removed, and the available Quadra-Lift air suspension system, the all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee features a 34.3-degree approach angle, (compared to 32.3 on previous model), a 29.3-degree departure angle (compared to 27.5 on previous model) and 23.1-degree breakover angle (compared to 20.4 on previous model).

The all-new front and rear independent suspension features isolated front and rear suspension cradles. Variable-rate rear springs deliver improved on-road handling and comfort that complements the vehicle’s off-road capability. The new rear suspension allows the spare tire to be stored inside the vehicle as opposed to underneath.

Go Anywhere 4x4 Systems

The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee offers three 4x4 systems (Quadra-Trac I®, Quadra-Trac II® and Quadra-Drive® II).

Quadra-Trac I deliver full-time four-wheel drive without any switches or levers to pull. The system provides smooth operation over a variety of road conditions. This lightweight single-speed case is both proven and highly efficient for enhanced fuel economy.

Quadra-Trac II’s two-speed transfer case uses input from a variety of sensors in order to determine tire slip at the earliest possible moment and take corrective action. The system uses Throttle Anticipate to sense quick movement in the throttle from a stop and maximizes traction before slippage occurs. When tire slippage is detected, as much as 100 percent of available torque is instantly routed to the axle with the most traction.

Quadra-Drive II, with a rear Electronic Limited Slip Differential (ELSD), delivers industry-leading tractive capability. The system instantly detects tire slip and smoothly distributes engine torque to tires with traction. In some cases, the vehicle will anticipate low traction and adjust in order to proactively limit or eliminate slip.

Selec-Terrain is standard with Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II.

Jeep Trail Rated®

All 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee models equipped with either the Off-road Adventure I or the Off-road Adventure II packages are Trail Rated. The Jeep Trail Rated badge on the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee indicates that the vehicle has been designed to perform in a variety of challenging off-road conditions identified by five key consumer-oriented performance categories: traction, ground clearance, maneuverability, articulation and water fording.

Jeep Trail Rated is a unique methodology used by Jeep Engineering to measure and predict off-road performance for all Jeep vehicles. Through a combination of natural and controlled field tests, Jeep Trail Rated provides a consistent measurement of off-road performance for all Jeep vehicles. Only Jeep vehicles are Trail Rated.

Design

Every surface of the all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee is new and treated for aerodynamics. This improves fuel efficiency and puts more fluidity into the design while delivering an 8.5-percent improvement in drag compared with the previous model. The all-new 2011 Grand Cherokee Coefficient of drag (Cd) is approximately 0.37 compared with the previous model’s Cd of 0.404.

“Our all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee is much more refined, focused and sportier than the model it replaces,” said Ralph Gilles, Senior Vice President — Product Design, Chrysler Group LLC. “It has classic Jeep Grand Cherokee styling with sculpted athletic exterior refinements for 2011.”

The front includes Jeep’s classic seven-slot grille, round headlamps and trapezoidal wheel arches. The removable lower front fascia delivers improved fuel economy, on-road performance and off-road capability. The lower front fascia features a large chromed appliqué (Limited and Overland models) that showcases available tow hooks.

From the side, Jeep Grand Cherokee features an athletic, muscular profile. Black appliqués on B-pillars give the bright daylight opening (DLO) an aerodynamic, modern appearance and a sleek profile. Available chromed mirrors and door handles add to the profile and complement the full-chromed DLO surround on all models.

Standard 17-and 18-in. wheels deliver off-road capability, along with all new to Jeep, optional 20-in. wheels for 2011 (standard on Overland and optional on Limited).

Taillamps wrap from the rear quarter panel to the back of the vehicle and create a solid form, which achieves a more upscale appearance. The treatment complements the front-end design and resonates with the rest of the exterior.

Jeep Grand Cherokee models equipped with the 5.7-liter multi-displacement system (MDS) V-8 engine have 3.5-inch dual chromed exhaust tips, and those with the V-6 engine have a 3-inch single exhaust.

The all-new interior features rich materials and elegant appointments, as well as more room for both passengers and cargo.

“Following in the footsteps of the benchmark 2009 Dodge Ram, the all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee is another proud graduate of our Advanced Interior Design Studio,” said Gilles. “We achieved a world-class interior by using fine materials and maintaining a more focused attention to detail.”

An available all-new CommandView® dual-pane sunroof provides twice as much glass surface than a standard sunroof and extends from the windshield to the rear of the vehicle. The front panel may be opened rearward, providing additional light and fresh air to first-row passengers. The rear panel, which is fixed, allows light and open viewing for second-row passengers and comes standard with a power sunshade.

Engineering

The vehicle’s 114.8-in. wheelbase is 5.3 inches longer than the model it replaces and contributes to an overall vehicle length that is 1.8 inches longer than the prior model. The longer wheelbase creates more interior room and gives passengers an additional 4 inches of rear-seat knee and legroom. The vehicle also is three inches wider for improved handling and packaging.

Larger front door openings (1.9 inches wider; 2 inches higher) and rear doors that open 78 degrees (compared to previous model’s 67 degrees) provide better access to the interior.

Inside, premium seating includes room for five passengers. An available fold-flat front-passenger seat provides improved cargo storage room (Laredo E models).

For maximum cargo and passenger comfort, rear seat backs move a total of 12 degrees front to back.

Cargo volume behind the second row provides an additional 5.6 cu. ft. of room (35.1 cu. ft. total) compared to the previous model. The well-appointed rear cargo area includes a storage unit with a removable/rechargeable flashlight and new and improved grocery hooks on both sides. The spare tire compartment includes removable dual storage bins for secure storage of muddy gear or other items.

An all-new power rear liftgate is available for effortless remote up/down convenience.

Continuing to build on the Jeep brand’s legendary off-road capability, the all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee adds premium on-road performance to complete the package.

The all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee’s premium SUV on-road manners and legendary Jeep ruggedness is achieved with more than 5,400 welds in the body alone. Torsional stiffness is 146 percent stiffer than the previous Grand Cherokee and stiffer than the BMW X5 and Toyota Highlander for improved durability and reduced noise, vibration and harshness (NVH).

More than 3,700 mm of arc welding and 100 m of structural adhesive augment the welding. This marks a 53-percent increase in spot welds, a 42-percent increase in arc welds and a 38-percent increase in structural adhesive.

The all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee is available with two leading engine options for North American markets.

All-new 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine

The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee features the first application of the all-new 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine. This all-new flexible-fuel 3.6-liter V-6 engine is standard on the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee and features an all-new design with dual overhead camshafts (DOHC) and a high-pressure die-cast aluminum cylinder block in a 60-degree configuration. It features variable-valve timing (VVT) and delivers 290 horsepower (216 kW) and 260 lb.-ft. (353 N•m) of torque at 4,800 rpm. The all-new V-6 engine improves fuel economy up to 11 percent compared to the previous Grand Cherokee equipped with a V-6. It is coupled with the proven W5A580, a five-speed automatic transmission that delivers smooth shifts and optimum fuel economy. The five-speed W5A580 transmission includes adaptive electronic control or Electronic Range Select (ERS) driver-interactive manual control and an electronically modulated torque converter clutch.

The all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee offers trailer tow capability of up to 5,000 pounds on models equipped with the Pentastar V-6 engine.

The all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee’s V-6 engine offers improved fuel economy and delivers a range of approximately 500 miles on one tank of gas.

Legendary 5.7-liter V-8 engine

The available legendary 5.7-liter MDS V-8 engine delivers 360 horsepower (268 kW) and 390 lb.-ft. (520 N•m) of torque at 4,250 rpm. The 5.7-liter V-8 also features VVT, which delivers performance and towing capability, and fuel efficiency with fuel-saving MDS. The MDS seamlessly alternates between smooth high-fuel-economy four-cylinder mode when less power is needed and V-8 mode when more power from the 5.7-liter MDS engine is requested. This optimizes fuel economy when V-8 power is not needed, without sacrificing vehicle performance. The 5.7-liter MDS V-8 engine is mated to the 545RFE multi-speed automatic transmission.

The all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee offers trailer tow capability of up to 7,400 pounds on 4x2 models when equipped with the 5.7-liter V-8 engine.

For international markets, the all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee will be available in left- and right-hand drive with either diesel or gas powertrains.

Safety and Security Features

The all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee includes more than 45 safety and security features and is a 2011 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick.

Standard safety features include electronic stability control (ESC), electronic roll mitigation (ERM), four-wheel anti-lock brake system (ABS) with rough-road detection, four-wheel brake traction control system, Keyless Enter-N-Go, remote keyless entry, express up/down windows for driver and front-seat passenger, seat-belt pretensioners, Trailer-sway Control and remote start, which is standard on Limited and Overland and available on Laredo models.

Other standard safety features include full-length side-curtain air bags, which extend protection to front and rear outboard passengers, seat-mounted side thorax air bags that enhance protection for the driver and front passenger, and active head restraints, which deploy in the event of a rear collision.

The body structure is all new and designed to achieve expected safety performance in global markets (new roof-crush standards, side-impact standards and European pedestrian impact standards).

Connectivity and Infotainment Features
The all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee offers customers an array of infotainment technologies for driver safety and passenger enjoyment. The features enable drivers to safely communicate, navigate and select entertainment options using advance voice recognition controls. Passengers can stay entertained with a multitude of features, including FLO TV™, SIRIUS Satellite Radio™, SIRIUS Backseat TV™, Uconnect® Navigation, Uconnect Phone and Uconnect Web.

More than 70 Years of Mopar
When Chrysler bought Dodge in 1928, the need for a dedicated parts manufacturer, supplier and distribution system to support the growing enterprise led to the formation of the Chrysler Motor Parts Corporation (CMPC) in 1929.

Mopar (a simple contraction of the words Motor and PARts) was trademarked for a line of antifreeze products in 1937. It also was widely used as a moniker for the CMPC. The Mopar brand made its mark in the 1960s – the muscle-car era. The Chrysler Corporation built race-ready Dodge and Plymouth “package cars” equipped with special high-performance parts. Mopar carried a line of “special parts” for super-stock drag racers and developed its racing parts division called Mopar Performance Parts to enhance speed and handling for both road and racing use.

Driven: 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee

October 25, 2010

If there is one vehicle that is key to Chrysler’s survival, there is a good chance that it is the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Grand Cherokee has always been a popular choice, especially in the Snow Belt, due to its off-road ability, large but easy-to-handle size, and general coolness. For 2011, the resilient GC gets some new sheet metal, and importantly, an all-new 3.6-liter V-6 motor. Jeep offered us a week behind the wheel, and during that time, we pushed it to the max both on- and off-road.

Our Bright Silver tester was a base Laredo with four-wheel drive (rear-wheel drive is also available for those who don’t quite get the “Jeep” idea), and importantly, the Off-Road Adventure I package. This is a must-have if you plan on getting your Jeep messy, as it replaces the Grand Cherokee’s standard Quadra-Trac I system with Quadra-Trac II. For those not familiar with Jeep-speak, that means the standard one-speed transfer case is replaced with a two-speed unit.

The second notable addition is Jeep’s new Selec-Terrain system. Working with the two-speed transfer case, Selec-Terrain offers Hill Descent Control, and five different terrain options (Auto, Sport, Snow, Sand/Mud, and Rock). While not as extensive as Land Rover’s Terrain Response System, Selec-Terrain works in a similar manner. By adjusting torque-distribution, brake force, and traction control settings (among other things), it optimizes the vehicle for different surfaces at the twist of a knob. We spent most of our on-road time in Auto, with twistier bits prompting us to switch to Sport. Both modes worked fine, but there was a noticeable shift in balance when in Sport mode. Eighty percent of the torque was transferred to the rear tires and the electronic stability program loosened up. In this mode, the Cherokee felt damn near nimble, which was surprising in a 4600-pound vehicle that was designed to work off-road.

The timing of our loan lined up with a yearly event that some friends plan, which involves fire hoses

Consumer Reports: Redesigned Jeep Grand Cherokee Outperforms Toyota 4Runner in Face-Off

YONKERS, N.Y., Nov. 1, 2010 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The redesigned Jeep Grand Cherokee midsized SUV earned a Very Good road test score and outscored its traditional rival, the Toyota 4Runner, which earned a Good score, in a face-off between the two vehicles in Consumer Reports' December issue.

The Jeep's ride, quietness, and interior won it points, though it was hampered by its emergency handling. By contrast, the 4Runner, redesigned for 2010, fell short on the road (though it showed terrific off-road prowess) and scored at the bottom of its class.

The Grand Cherokee is the first new model that Chrysler has released post-bankruptcy, and it's based on the next generation Mercedes-Benz ML.

"The Grand Cherokee is a big improvement over the previous model, with refinement on par with models that cost a lot more," said David Champion, senior director of Consumer Reports' Auto Test Center in East Haddam, Connecticut. "The 4Runner, which still uses a body-on-frame design, is disappointing on the road. The 4Runner doesn't let you forget you're driving a truck."

Prices for the vehicles were $39,010 for the Grand Cherokee and $37,425 for the 4Runner.

The Grand Cherokee is too new for Consumer Reports to have reliability data and the 4Runner scored too low in CR's testing for CR to Recommend it. CR only Recommends vehicles that have performed well in its tests, have at least average predicted reliability based on CR's Annual Auto Survey of its more than seven million print and Web subscribers, and performed at least adequately if crash-tested or included in a government rollover test.

Full tests and ratings for both vehicles appear in the December issue of Consumer Reports, which goes on sale November 2. The reports are also available to subscribers of Consumer Reports: Expert product reviews and product Ratings from our test labs. Updated daily, ConsumerReports.org is the go-to site for the latest auto reviews, product news, blogs on breaking news and car buying information.

The Grand Cherokee rides well and is quiet and steady on the highway. The Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo X 4WD ($39,010 Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price as tested), is powered by a 290-hp 3.6- liter V6 engine that is smooth and gets 18 mpg overall in CR's own fuel economy tests. During CR's emergency handling tests the Jeep was difficult to control in the avoidance maneuver. The five-speed automatic transmission is smooth and responsive. Braking is Very Good. The interior is nicely-finished, with soft touch panels and nicely detailed leather seats. Cargo room can be increased by folding the rear seatbacks.

The 4Runner's ride has constant body motions and body lean is pronounced in corners, even at a leisurely pace. Its overly light steering is slow to respond. The Toyota 4Runner SR5 4X4 ($37,425 MSRP as tested), is powered by a 270-hp, 4.0-liter, V6 engine that is punchy and gets 18 mpg overall. The five-speed automatic transmission is responsive. Braking is Very Good. The interior is utilitarian and features cheap-looking plastics. Cargo room can be increased by folding the rear seatbacks.

All-new Jeep® Grand Cherokee Now Powered by New 3.0-liter Turbo Diesel Engine

* New 3.0-liter turbo, direct-injection V-6 diesel engine now available for the all-new Jeep® Grand Cherokee

* Fitted with MultiJet II technology developed by Fiat Powertrain

* New engine delivers more power and torque with improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions

* New 3.0-liter turbo diesel will arrive to European markets by the end of the first half of 2011

* Diesel engine joins the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 and 5.7-liter MDS V-8 petrol engines

* Laredo and Limited versions now available in Europe

February 21, 2011 , Auburn Hills, Mich. -

At the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, the all-new Jeep® Grand Cherokee will debut a new, optional 3.0-liter turbo diesel engine available for Europe and other diesel markets. The new engine is more powerful, more fuel efficient and produces lower emissions than its predecessor.

Built by VM Motori and developed together with Fiat Powertrain, a company of Fiat S.p.a., the new 3.0-liter turbo diesel engine produces maximum horsepower of 177 kW (241 hp DIN) at 4,000 rpm and torque of 550 N•m (406 lb-ft) at 1,800-2,800 rpm. This translates to 10 percent more power and eight percent more torque than the engine it replaces.

Even with its improved performance, fuel economy for the new 3.0-liter turbo diesel engine is 8.3 L/100km on the combined cycle, an improvement of 17 percent over the prior diesel engine. CO2 emissions (combined cycle) are also reduced by 17 percent, now at 218 g/km.

The V-6 turbo diesel engine is fitted with new-generation, 1,800-bar injectors with new MultiJet II technology, developed and patented by Fiat Powertrain and which made its debut in 2009 on the 1.3-liter diesel engine equipped on the Punto Evo.

Engine Block Structure
The new 3.0-liter turbo diesel engine features a compressed graphite iron, 60-degree block with aluminum cylinder heads and a two-piece structural aluminum oil pan. Bore is 83 mm (3.27 in) and stroke is 92 mm (3.62 in) for a total displacement of 2987 cm3 (182 in3). Bore spacing is 96 mm (3.78 in).

The engine is compact and lightweight, with overall dimensions of 695 mm (27.36 in) in length, 729 mm (28.7 in) in width and 697.5 mm (27.46 in) in height. Weight of the fully dressed new engine is 230 kg (507 lbs).

The engine block features a crankcase architecture with stiffened construction, including a bedplate that provides a rigid and stiff carrier for the crankshaft. This in turn helps reduce overall noise from the lower reciprocating assembly and contributes to significant improvements in overall noise, vibration and harshness.

Adding to the structural rigidity of the block, the two-piece aluminum oil pan has been designed to provide strength and contribute to the quietness of the engine. The lower pan has been reinforced for off-road use. Crankcase capacity is 7.7 L (2 gal).

Cylinder heads are constructed of aluminum and feature a chain-driven, dual overhead-camshaft design with four valves per cylinder. Intake valves measure 28 mm (1.1 in), and exhaust valves are 24.5 mm (0.96 in) in diameter. Combustion-chamber volume is 24.68 cm3 (1.51 in3).

A forged-steel crankshaft is supported by four main bearing journals fitted with four-bolt main bearing caps incorporated into the bedplate. Externally balanced, the crankshaft measures 442.2 mm (17.41 in), reducing the overall packaging requirements of the engine. Connecting rods, with an overall length of 162.9 mm (6.41 in), are constructed of cast iron.

Lightweight, cast-aluminum pistons are redesigned to provide minimal friction. The compression ratio of the new diesel engine is now 16.5:1, reduced from 18.1:1 on the previous model, contributing to cleaner combustion and providing more power.

All main bearings are a “lead free” design for reduced environmental impact during construction and later recycling of the engine.

Engine Performance Features
The induction system includes swirl control to optimize combustion. Fitted between the intake system and the combustion chamber, the swirl control effectively provides an ideal air/fuel mixture at all levels of engine speed.

Precise fuel delivery is through a 1,800-bar common-rail fuel-injection system. Thanks to the new MultiJet II technology, which makes use of a special balanced solenoid valve, the new injector is capable of making up to eight injections per cycle with the possibility of managing the two main injections in a single modular profile (IRS – Injection Rate Shaping). This guarantees a reduction in consumption and polluting emissions of approximately 2 percent compared to a traditional injector and ensures a drastic reduction in noise levels.

The new 3.0-liter diesel engine utilizes a single Garrett VGT 2056 turbocharger with variable turbine geometry. Compact and lightweight, the turbocharger provides near-instant response and includes an air-to-air intercooler.

Fuel Economy and Emissions
Fuel economy for the Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 3.0-liter turbo diesel engine is rated at 10.3 L/100 km on the urban cycle and 7.2 L/100 km on the extra-urban cycle. For the combined cycle, the fuel economy is rated at 8.3 L/100 km.

The engine is designed to run on EN590 ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel.

For this engine, cast-iron exhaust manifolds are utilized. Additional emissions controls include a close-coupled diesel oxidation catalyst and standard diesel particulate filter. Euro 5 emissions are met through an exhaust-gas recirculation (EGR) system that includes an EGR valve with DC motor and a high-performance EGR cooler with bypass valve.

CO2 emissions are reduced to 270 g/km for the urban cycle and 188 g/km for the extra-urban cycle. Combined-cycle CO2 emissions are now 218 g/km.

Lineup
Jeep Grand Cherokee will be now offered in Europe in Laredo and Limited trim lines in addition to the Overland version. The Laredo and Limited trim lines will be available with the 3.6-liter V-6 Pentastar engine and new 3.0-liter turbo diesel, while Overland will be available for the total engine lineup.

The 3.0-liter turbo diesel engine for the new-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee will be offered in European markets also as a low-output version, with 140 kW (190 hp DIN) of power at 4,000 rpm and 440 N•m (324 lb-ft) of torque across 1,600-2,800 rpm. The low-output version of the turbo diesel engine will be standard on Laredo models (optional on Limited). This will allow Grand Cherokee to meet a wider potential market in Europe.

The new diesel engine will be available in Jeep showrooms by the end of the first half of the year and will join two petrol engines to round out the powertrain lineup.

The all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee features the first application of the all-new 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 petrol engine. This V-6 engine with variable valve timing (VVT) delivers 210 kW (286 hp DIN) of power and 347 N•m (256 lb-ft) of torque.

The Grand Cherokee is also available with the legendary 5.7-liter V-8 petrol engine. Also with VVT, this powerful engine delivers 259 kW (352 hp DIN) of power and 520 N•m (384 lb-ft) of torque. The engine’s Multi-displacement System (MDS) helps manage fuel efficiency and can cut fuel delivery to up to four cylinders under certain driving conditions.

2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee CRD in Australia mid-year
By Tim Beissmann | February 23rd, 2011

The Jeep Grand Cherokee CRD will be unveiled at next week’s Geneva Motor Show ahead of its Australian launch around the middle of the year.

The engine, designed and built by Fiat Powertrain and VM Motori, is a 3.0-litre turbo-diesel unit with 177kW of power and 550Nm of torque (available between 1800 and 2800rpm). The outgoing diesel engine produced 160kW and 510Nm.

Despite the power increases, combined cycle fuel consumption is 8.3 litres/100km and CO2 emissions have dropped to 218g/km. Both represent efficiency improvements of 17 percent over the old model.

Jeep Australia’s Dean Bonthorne told CarAdvice the local branch was still getting together firm specifications of the vehicles, but admitted the Grand Cherokee CRD models would arrive either late in the second quarter or early in the third quarter. Its first appearance will not be at the 2011 Australian International Motor Show in Melbourne, as Jeep does not have a stand there this year.

Mr Bonthorne confirmed the 3.0-litre diesel engine would be offered across all three models lines: Laredo, Limited and Overland. He said the engine would carry a price premium over the V6 petrol engines, with official pricing to be confirmed closer to the launch.

Mr Bonthorne said Jeep was very much playing a game of “wait and see” over which engine type – petrol or diesel – would be the most popular in the new model line.

“The diesel was historically the best selling model, but the Pentastar V6 now offers a genuine alternative, Mr Bonthorne said.

“The diesel’s 3.5 tonne towing capacity and extra torque makes it the ideal towing vehicle, but the V6 will be the one for economy and price.”

The 3.0-litre turbo-diesel engine features a compressed graphite iron block with aluminium cylinder heads and a two-piece structural aluminium oil pan. Its compact and lightweight construction leads to a total weight of 230kg.

Jeep says the stiffened crankcase architecture has led to improvements in noise, vibration and harshness, while the cast-aluminium pistons have been redesigned to provide minimal friction. The compression ratio of the diesel engine is now 16.5:1, down from 18.1:1, leading to cleaner combustion and more power.
