Chrysler's 4 area plants plan 2-week shutdown
Work toward '11 models affects 5,500 employees

Chrysler Group LLC will shut down its four regional factories the weeks of July 12 and July 19 as the automaker switches over to begin manufacturing 2011 model-year vehicles.

The two-week summer shutdown affects employees at Chrysler's Toledo Assembly complex, where the Jeep Liberty and Dodge Nitro are manufactured, as well as its Toledo Machining plant in Perrysburg Township and the Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance plant in Dundee, Mich. Not shutting down is the Wrangler plant at the Toledo Assembly complex.

Any changes in body or power plants for 2011 ?
Sorry I don't think we will see a thing except those hood/fender stripes but that new V-6 would have been great with about 290 HP! Here is an update on that:

Pentastar V6 engines (née Phoenix) debut with the Grand Cherokee. The engines have a modular base so different versions are easier to make. The 3.6 pumps out 290 horsepower, without MultiAir (which might be added). Coming up are turbo and twin turbo versions, a 3-liter, a 3.3, and direct injection; the latter was delayed as MultiAir was prioritized higher. The twin turbo might be used on Maseratis.

As of May 17, 2010, the Pentastar V6 engine is in active production; but glitches are keeping production low. There are issues with block production, the oil filter mount, and defective parts being rejected; on the light side, standards are apparently being kept very high, with Chrysler showing a willingness to deal with low production rather than allow poor quality engines out the door.

We were told that the same teething issues happened with past engines, including the sturdy 3.3 V6 and the new 4.0 liter V6, and that they will be worked out in time. Apparently, while the kinks in block production are being worked out, more people are being put onto block production while the final assembly area remains on a single shift.

The Pentastar-equipped minivan is reportedly S2, the Pentastar-equipped Challenger is reportedly S1, as of June 17.

Keep checking back since we will post pictures and all info on the 2011 NITO soon.

The next Jeep Liberty will use the same key dimensions as new C and D class (midsized) cars in 2013, so that as Jeep and car orders fluctuate, the same factory can vary its output rather than have one plant idle while another works overtime. The Liberty could be a “real Jeep” that just shares key dimensions with mid-sized cars. The Nitro is not expected to continue.
