Fiat 600 (4-door)?

Report: Fiat 500 four-door to be badged as Fiat 600
May 18, 2010

The Fiat 500 will be available in North America with a 1.4L Multiair engine in the fourth quarter of 2010. It will be built in Mexico starting December 2010. A 1.4L Multiair turbo is expected to arrive in the fourth-quarter of 2011.

Following those models, Chrysler Group LLC and Fiat SpA have promised that they will offer the North American market a pure electric version of the Fiat 500 in 2012.

We’ve previously heard reports of a four-door version of the 500, which is scheduled to arrive in Europe at the end of 2011. The four-door 500 is also expected to be sold in North America.

Sources are saying that the four-door model will most likely be called the Fiat 600 and will be built alongside the 500 in Toluca, Mexico. Power is rumored to come from the 500’s 4-cylinder engine range.

Abarth Fiat 500 Spider

Abarth Fiat 500 Spider

Thursday, June 24, 2010

According to various sources, Fiat is working on another open top version of the 500 - the Abarth Fiat 500 Spider. The Abarth Fiat 500 Spider will be a two-seater roadster that will be powered by a 1.4-liter turbo engine developing around 180 hp. The top speed of the new Abarth Fiat 500 Spider two-seater will be around the 140 mph and early speculations say it will be able to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than 7 seconds.

The engine of the Abarth Fiat 500 Spider will send its power to the wheels via an automated manual gearbox with steering wheel mounted paddle shifters.

For good handling in the corners, the Abarth Fiat 500 Spider might get the same suspensions tweaks as the Esseesse version of the 500. apart from the new suspension, the Abarth Fiat 500 Spider will also get an upgraded set of brakes, a new sport exhaust and a rear diffuser. The interior of the Abarth Fiat 500 Spider will benefit from new bucket seats and new seatbelts.

The Abarth Fiat 500 Spider price is expected to fall in the 20,000 GBP category when it will hit the market in 2012.

First Drive: 2010 Fiat 500C Abarth
A Yappy Pedigreed Chihuahua with a Rollback Roof

June 30, 2010

First, the back story. Fiat, the Big One of the Italian auto industry, owns a large portion of Ferrari, all of Maserati, Alfa Romeo, and Lancia...plus Abarth. Originally founded in the late 1940s by an Austrian, Karl Abarth, the company specialized for decades in making parts that made Fiats faster. The hoods of rear-engined 500 racers from the 1960s were always propped open, usually to make room for stuff from Abarth.

Having acquired Abarth, Fiat has spent the last three years remodelling the brand. It's now established in Europe and beyond as Fiat's specialist partner for tuning kits, ready-to-go race cars, and premium-priced performance models. (Some 22,000 Abarth-branded cars have been sold over that three-year span) The Abarth 500C is the latest addition to the lineup. It gives the full Abarth street-racer treatment to the tiny front-engine cabrio with the roll-back roof.

Sometime after Fiat re-enters the American market early in 2011 with the Mexican-made 500 and 500C, the plan is for Abarth to follow with its versions. Timing? Fiat execs will only say that it will be done by 2013. They're still wrestling with the problem of how to brand the cars, which are shorn of Fiat badges and wear only Abarth identification in Europe. The favored solution, according to one exec, is to tag Abarth onto the end of Fiat's names. If this is the choice that's made, America's future Fiat 500C Abarth is sure to be different from today's Abarth 500C.

Fiat 500 Ferrari Edition By Pogea Racing – The F1 Ladybug

July 1st, 2010

The little bug with Ferrari flavor is brought in major league by Pogea Racing, the standard values of the 1.4-liter turbocharged engine of 165 HP and 230 Nm both received extra 100 – HP and NM – reaching the impressive numbers of 268 HP and 330 Nm, values similar to ones of a VW Golf R. But the big problems are that this car has two-wheel drive and a very short wheelbase. So, some better brakes and a stiffer suspension solving the problems of torque-steering and udersteering only partially.

The Italian carmaker has released today the first Fiat 500 TwinAir video after it has unveiled the new, 2-cylinder, version of the popular European mini. The video features both the Fiat 500 TwinAir and its open-top version, the 500C. In case you missed yesterday's unveiling, the Fiat 500 and 500C TwinAir are powered by a new two-cylinder 900 cc turbo engine that develops 85 hp and 145 Nm of torque. The company claims this new unit offers the same performance as the current 1.4 16v engine, but with 30% less fuel. The Fiat 500 TwinAir has a 92 g/km CO2 emissions level and a 4.0 l/100 km fuel consumption in the city. The Little 57-mpg Engine That Could

* July 12, 2010

Ever-tighter fuel economy and emissions regs, not to mention changing consumer tastes, have automakers doing more with less. We’re seeing a resurgence in compacts and subcompacts, and automakers are putting smaller, more efficient engines in many models. But Fiat is taking it to a whole ‘nother level by putting a tiny two-cylinder engine in the adorable 500.

Fiat says the TwinAir 875cc will be the world’s most fuel-efficient gasoline automobile engine — getting 57.4 mpg — when it appears in the 500 this fall. It meets Euro 5 emission regs and will allow Fiat to retain its position as the European automaker with the lowest overall fleet CO2 emissions.

“We have no intention of relinquishing our crown of Europe’s greenest automaker and the TwinAir engine will have a crucial role in maintaining our lead,” Alfredo Altavilla, Fiat vice president for business development, told Automotive News Europe.

It also brings the 500 closer to its roots, because the original Cinquecento used a two-cylinder engine, as did other microcars in post-war Europe. But don’t think Fiat’s gone all retro with the tiny engine. It’s thoroughly modern, and it sounds like an impressive bit of kit.

The parallel twin uses four valves per cylinder. Electro-hydraulic intake valves with variable timing in place of a conventional camshaft allow more precise combustion, increasing fuel economy and torque. Fitted with a tiny turbocharger, the TwinAir produces 85 horsepower and 106 pound feet of torque. An “eco” mode cuts that to 73 pound feet to boost fuel economy further. The engine also has stop-start technology.

Auto Express spent some time behind the wheel of a TwinAir 500 and came away impressed. The engine feels a lot like a four-banger below 2,500 RPM and has good pull in part because the transmission has short gearing. Wind the little engine that could up and it sounds like a motorcycle — not at all surprising, given the engine is actually smaller than those in many bikes. A counterbalancer keeps things smooth, and Auto Express says the TwinAir performs a lot like a 1.4-liter four.

Fiat says the TwinAir will do zero to 100 km/hr in 11 seconds and top out at 107 mph.

Bolted to a semi-auto gearbox, the engine delivers a Prius-like 57.4 mpg and emits 92 g/km of CO2. The five-speed drops the figures to 54 mpg and 95 g/km, according to ANE. Fiat also will offer a non-turbo model good for 65 horsepower and a tuned turbo version good for 115.

A TwinAir 500 will go for $16,775 in Italy. No word on whether the engine will make it to this side of the Atlantic when the 500 arrives at the end of the year. The company also is planning a mild-hybrid drivetrain using the engine.

Isn’t it cute? TwinAir, by the numbers: One turbocharger, two cylinders, eight valves, 85 horsepower and 106 pound feet. And it gets 57.8 mpg.

Fiat 500 electric vehicle to
get new battery provider

Chrysler is looking for a new battery supplier
after A123 Systems withdrew from the Fiat 500
electric vehicle project after the battery maker
reported a second-quarter loss of $34.2 million,
compared with a loss of $21.9 million a year
earlier.

“A123 will not be supplying battery systems for
the Fiat 500 EV production program,” said Katie
Hepler, a Chrysler spokeswoman. “A123 has
been a good development partner in this program
and we appreciate their support. We have nothing
else to announce at this time.”

Chrysler and A123, a Watertown, Mass.,
company with a battery plant in Livonia,
announced their partnership last March. They
planned to start producing an undisclosed
number of battery-powered Fiat 500 EVs in 2012
at Chrysler’s Toluca, Mexico, assembly plant
where assembly of gasoline engine 500s will
begin late this year.

A123 CEO David Vieau said a competing supplier
came forward who was “willing to buy the
business below current market price in a
program which has significantly diminished in
scale from our earlier expectation.”
It’s unclear whether this change will delay the
launch of the Fiat 500 EV. Chrysler is behind
Ford, General Motors and Japanese automakers in
both gasoline-electric hybrids and all-electric
vehicles.

While Chrysler declined to identify the new
supplier, Electrovaya is supplying lithium-ion
batteries for a test fleet of about 140 plug-in
Dodge Rams. Former Chrysler president Tom
LaSorda is an adviser and director of Electrovaya,
which is located in Mississauga, Ont.
Those battery-powered trucks will mate a
battery with Chrysler’s 5.7-liter Hemi V8 engine.

The trucks will be able to travel 20 miles on
battery power alone. The program is funded
through a $48-million U.S. Department of
Energy grant.

Fiat 500 Small Car Makes Big Splash at Concorso Italiano
Friday August 13 2010

Displayed proudly amongst its Italian brethren, the Fiat 500 attracted plenty of attention during the new model’s first showing at Concorso Italiano – one of the may high profile events in the lead up to Sunday’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. And to go along with the 500, Fiat was winning over attendees with Gelato and San Pellegrino, while showcasing a lineup of stylish Fiat accessories.

We have no doubt numerous Fiat items were purchased by the monied attendees. In fact, the only thing not selling was the 500 itself – which is set to hit dealers this December. That’s a bit unfortunate for Fiat as we’re certain they could have sold dozens of models to the Italian car-loving participants and attendees at Concorso – particularly to some of the wealthier folks who probably spend more than the Fiat’s MSRP on a watch.

Fiat is set to officially debut the U.S.-spec 500 at the LA Auto Show this December.

Chrysler Group LLC Begins Fiat Dealer Appointment Process in U.S.

Auburn Hills, Mich. , Oct 20, 2010 - Chrysler Group LLC announced today that it has begun appointing dealers that will represent the Fiat Brand in the United States.

The dealers appointed in this first phase have plans in place and will be ready to take orders for the iconic Fiat 500 subcompact. Chrysler Group continues to work with some dealers on their proposals and will name additional Fiat dealers by the end of the year. In all, Chrysler Group would like to have Fiat dealers in 119 markets in the U.S., mostly in areas chosen for their high concentration of small-car registrations.

Chrysler Group’s Fiat dealer selection team has spent the last few weeks reviewing proposals from existing Chrysler Group dealers who want to add the Fiat franchise to their brand portfolio. The dealers provided detailed facility, marketing, sales and service plans in their proposals.

“We have carefully considered each of these dealer proposals looking for the best locations and the most creative plans,” said Peter Grady, Chrysler Group’s Vice President of Network Development and Fleet Operations. “We are thrilled with their level of interest in securing the Fiat franchise and in the innovative proposals they have submitted. We’re excited to be at the point where we now can start appointing our Fiat dealer network.”

“We are looking for a customer experience that is as unique and personalized as the Fiat 500 itself,” said Laura Soave, Head of Fiat Brand North America. “Some of the proposals are extremely creative and in many cases not only met but exceeded our expectations. We are looking forward to working with our dealer team for the successful launch of the Fiat Brand in the United States and offering our customers the personal experience that they deserve in our Fiat Studios.”

Chrysler Group dealers presented interim and long-term facility plans that are both imaginative and resourceful. Some dealers will build new state-of-the art facilities, while others plan to convert on-site used car and other buildings into Fiat dealerships. Some dealers will purchase former auto dealerships, while others are snapping up empty retail stores in their markets.

Dealers from outside the Chrysler Group dealer network also have shown great interest in securing the Fiat franchise. The company is now looking at their proposals as well.

Chrysler Group is building the Fiat 500 in its Toluca, Mexico, assembly plant.

Mopar® Previews Customized Vehicles for 2010 SEMA Show

2010 Fiat 500 (European version)

Auburn Hills, Mich. , Oct 25, 2010 - It’s SEMA season.

This vehicle is an extreme version of the popular European version of the Fiat 500, which has won 60 international awards, including the 2008 European Car of the Year and the 2009 World Car Design of the Year.

The concept car features a number of unique parts created by the Mopar Underground team, including a front airdam/lip, lower sill, spoiler, rear valance and brake ducts. The 2010 Fiat 500 features a lower ride height on 18-inch Alcoa wheels and flared wheel arches reminiscent of the Fiat 500 models that dominated race tracks in Europe back in the day.

The vehicle rides on Pirelli tires with a mean, wheels-out-and-down stance that is accentuated by a Dark Thunderbolt Gray exterior. The black roof, black hood, headlamp and fascia graphics tie the headlamps together. The lower “chin” of the Fiat 500 hooks up with a flare that surrounds the front wheel. A lower side sill, also in black, adorns the sides.

The interior is driver-focused, with a red seat and red door insert on the driver’s side, with piano-black accents on the instrument panel. The remainder of the interior is outfitted in a subdued black.

The always-sporty Fiat 500 is bolstered with the power and performance that comes with Mopar parts. Mopar bolt-ons include a Mopar custom exhaust system that provides horsepower and torque gains and a Mopar strut tower brace that reduces body flex in the front end and improves drivability and handling.

Two additional Fiat 500 vehicles will be on display in the Mopar Alley, outfitted with a full complement of Mopar parts and accessories. The all-new Fiat 500 will be available for ordering in the U.S. later this year in the Sport, Pop and Lounge models, followed by the all-new Fiat 500C (cabrio) in the spring of 2011.
