Abarth Exists for No Reason But Fun

2015 Fiat 500 Abarth Exists for No Reason But Fun

The 2015 Fiat 500 Abarth is impractically small, ridiculously loud, aesthetically immature and incredibly fun.

There is absolutely nothing sensible or practical about the Fiat 500 Abarth. It’s too small. It’s too loud. It’s too aggressive. It’s too silly looking. And, none of that matters because it’s also too much fun to drive.

2016 Fiat 500X

Italian cutie with a U.S. cousin

04/26/2015

The 2016 Fiat 500X, a small crossover that debuts next month in the automaker's "studios" (that's apparently Italian for showrooms), is a useful cutie that trumpets the win-win nature of what the industry calls "commonality."

Commonality is the use of the same structure and mechanicals in different vehicles. Everybody does it. Audi and Volkswagen models often employ the same components. Chevrolet and GMC pickups use the same structure and mechanicals.

The practice saves money for the automaker and the consumer and doesn't matter as long as the sameness isn't apparent.

Such is the case with the Jeep Renegade and the new 500X, which both roll down the same Fiat Chrysler assembly line in Melfi, Italy.

"That's how you get the better deal for the consumer. You use the same mechanicals as long as they're not customer-critical," said Art Anderson, the engineering executive for the 500X. "Does the customer really care if the HVAC [the heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning gear] is the same as the one in the Renegade?"

But, Anderson said, they do care about things like styling, which explains why the exterior and interior designs of the two are different.

The vehicle's purpose and "brand personality" also require differentiation.

"The 500X has an on-road mission, while the Renegade's is both on- and off-road," Anderson said. Thus, the 500X, while available with all-wheel-drive, does not have the special, off-road equipment found on the Renegade Trailhawk model.

On the other hand, in the interests of brand personality, its suspension has been revised to give it a sportier feel than the Renegade's.

The 500X is the third Fiat model to be sold in the United States, fitting between the smaller 500 and the larger 500L.

A good-looking, pleasant driver with a $20,000 starting price and all-wheel-drive availability, the vehicle should become the brand's top-seller in this country, Fiat believes. Competition includes the Chevy Trax, Nissan Juke, and Buick Encore.

The 500X will come in five flavors: the base Pop ($20,000), the Easy ($22,300), the more macho Trekking ($23,100), the comfort-minded Lounge ($24,850), and the top-of-the-line Trekking Plus ($27,100).

The base Pop bolts a six-speed manual gearbox to the 160-horsepower, 1.4-liter turbo that first saw duty in the sporty 500 Abarth. The drivetrain in the rest of the models consists of the 180-horse, 2.4-liter Tigershark engine and a nine-speed automatic.

I tested the front-drive version of the well-equipped 500X Lounge. This model, like the Pop and Easy, is fitted with a classic 500 front end, while the Trekking's nose is more aggressive.

Either way, the 500X is bellissima. Like its brethren, it has signature 500 styling elements like the clamshell hood, the double headlights, and the trapezoidal grille. However, its eight inches of ground clearance, bigger wheels, and more pronounced wheel arches give it a tad more muscularity.

The tester's body fits were on the money, and the masculine interior was pleasing. The interior was comfortable enough, although backseat leg room proved a little tight.

The seats were supportive and visibility was good, except in ambitious corners when the fat windshield pillar intruded on your line of vision.

The car's steering, braking, and handling were good stuff, although a bump in the road reminded you that this was a pretty stiff suspension.

The engineers expect the 2.4 in the Lounge, like the 1.4 turbo, to deliver highway miles per gallon of more than 30.

The 2.4 gives adequate power but is hardly lively. I thought the 1.4 turbo encountered earlier in the Renegade was more fun.

“2016 Fiat 500X”
A new family member with available All-Wheel Drive

Beverly Hills, CA - Just as MINI has done by introducing several different models and body formats, Fiat is expanding their portfolio of vehicles to provide a broader choice of body styles serving a variety of purposes. The latest entry into the Fiat family is the 2016 Fiat 500X – an all-new small crossover or multi-purpose vehicle (the first global Fiat model) that comfortably seats five, provides clever storage and blends Fiat’s iconic Italian styling with heightened functionality, spirited performance and confidence-building available all-wheel drive capability.

The new Fiat 500X is positioned between the Fiat 500 Coupe and the Fiat 500L in the lineup, serving up a contemporary Italian design flavor in......

2016 Fiat 500X Earns 34-MPG Highway Rating

2016 Fiat 500X Earns 34-MPG Highway Rating From EPA

05/07/2015

The 2016 Fiat 500X, an all-new model in Fiat's lineup, returns 25 mpg in city driving and 34 mpg on the highway for a combined rating of 28 mpg, according to the EPA.

The rating refers to the base model with the 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a six-speed manual transmission.

The 2016 Fiat 500X with the 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and a nine-speed automatic transmission returns 22 mpg in city driving and 31 mpg on the highway for a combined rating of 25 mpg.

The EPA has not published official fuel economy numbers for the all-wheel-drive version of the Fiat 500X.

Arriving at Fiat dealers this quarter, the 500X competes with the Mini Cooper Countryman and Nissan Juke.

The 500X launches as gas prices are relatively inexpensive. The AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report on Wednesday pegged the average price for a gallon of unleaded gasoline at $2.63 versus $3.66 a year ago.

A few weeks ago, I had the absolute privilege to drive the 2016 Fiat 500X through the amazing scenery of Southern California. My first post was about the experience of driving this great car. But, I also wanted to talk about the design and specs of this amazing vehicle.
