July 27, 2015 , Auburn Hills, Mich. -

Dodge will soon be opening the dealer order banks for 2016 model year Dodge Challenger and Charger SRT Hellcats, streamlining the process and significantly increasing production to ensure that the fastest, most powerful muscle cars ever continue to move off dealer lots.

“We could not have asked for a more enthusiastic response to the Charger and Challenger SRT Hellcats – it was absolutely unprecedented, but then again, these 707-horsepower muscle cars are unprecedented,” said Tim Kuniskis, President and CEO, Dodge and SRT brands, FCA US. “To meet this demand, we are more than doubling our SRT Hellcat production for 2016 and simplifying the process to make it easier for our enthusiasts to get their hands on the hottest muscle cars in history. In addition, customers with verified sold orders that weren’t built in the 2015 model year will receive special discounted pricing if they re-order in 2016.”

The plan for 2016 model year includes:

Remaining 2015 SRT Hellcat scheduled orders will be built at Brampton (Ont.) Assembly
All unscheduled 2015 model year SRT Hellcat orders will be cancelled; these customers will receive discounted 2016 model year pricing
Dealers will get a 2016 model year potential allocation total for the entire model year in August 2015
2016 model year SRT Hellcat allocation eligibility will continue to be based on past Dodge sales performance
Allocation will be adjusted based on dealers’ average historical Dodge SRT Challenger and Charger Hellcat “days on lot” performance
They will receive half of the 2016 model year allocation (net of adjustments) beginning in August 2015. They will receive the second half of the 2016 model year allocation (net of adjustments) in February 2016
Dealers will only be able to order their given allocation

The ordering system will open the second week of August. Production of the 2016 Dodge Charger and Challenger is scheduled to start at the Brampton, (Ont.), Assembly plant in September.

Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat
The Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat is the fastest, most powerful muscle car ever, thanks to the supercharged HEMI Hellcat V-8 engine, which delivers an unprecedented 707 horsepower and 650 lb.-ft. of torque. The Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat also is the fastest muscle car ever with a National Hot Rod Association-certified ¼-mile elapsed time of 11.2 seconds with stock Pirelli P Zero tires. With drag radials, the ¼-mile run dropped to just 10.8 seconds.

Upgraded for 2016, the Challenger SRT Hellcat now features standard ultra-premium Laguna Leather interior appointments, Uconnect 8.4AN with navigation, HD radio and five years of SiriusXM Travel Link and SiriusXM Traffic.

Dodge cancels unfilled '15 Hellcat orders

Dodge cancels unfilled '15 Hellcat orders, doubles '16 output

July 27, 2015

DETROIT -- Fiat Chrysler will more than double production of hard-to-get Hellcat versions of the Dodge Challenger and Charger for the 2016 model year.

But about 900 consumers who ordered a 2015 Dodge Challenger or Charger SRT Hellcat and never received their 707-hp muscle car will have to get back in line.

Their unfilled orders are being canceled by the factory -- though those customers will receive a voucher that will allow them to buy the more expensive 2016 at the 2015 price. The price increase has not yet been announced.

The Hellcat cars created marketing and Internet buzz for Dodge -- very welcome for a brand rebuilding its high-performance credibility. But dealers who accepted more orders than they could fill or put huge market adjustments on the cars sowed some ill will. For example, one dealer in a northeast Ohio town of 6,000 took deposits and put in orders for more than 200 Hellcats -- many more than the dealer would ever receive.

"For the 2016 model year, we're starting fresh," Tim Kuniskis, Dodge brand head, told Automotive News. Canceling customer orders "is probably not what they want to hear, but we're going to do it so that we have a fresh, clean slate going forward with everything that we learned in 2015."
Kuniskis: Better supply and new procedures may end some of the big market adjustments.

Dodge also is changing the way dealers receive Hellcat allocations and place orders, Kuniskis said.

The number of Hellcats dealers receive still will be based on the total number of Dodge vehicles they sell in a given period. But dealers will be told exactly how many Challenger and Charger Hellcats they will receive between the start of 2016 production in September and February, as well as their total potential allocation for the year.

And, in another big change, dealers won't be able to place orders above their allocation. And if they don't sell the cars quickly when they receive them -- which can happen, for example, if a dealer jacks up the price with a large market adjustment -- the dealers could lose some of their future Hellcat allocation, Kuniskis said.

Dodge will start taking 2016 orders the week of Aug. 10.

To explain all of this, Dodge will call the hundreds of consumers with unfilled orders for 2015 Dodge Challenger and Charger SRT Hellcats that FCA US has on file, Kuniskis said. The calls will begin today, July 27.

He estimated the order number as "around 900" but said there likely are duplicates from individuals who placed orders at as many as three dealerships in hopes of getting a car. Some 2015 orders still will be filled because 2015 production is continuing.

The consumers will be informed that their factory orders are being canceled, but if they are still interested, they will receive a voucher -- usable by that individual only -- that will hold the 2015 pricing, at least from the factory.

Many Dodge dealers added significant market adjustments to Hellcats, and Kuniskis said the ultimate transaction price still will be reached by the customer and the dealer.

Kuniskis said he hopes the additional production -- "it's not a few more; it's a lot more" -- will address some of the high-price demands that some dealers were making for 2015 Hellcats.

The Dodge boss won't say exactly how many more Hellcats will be built for the 2016 model year. During the first half of 2015, the company built about 4,000 SRT Hellcats.

For 2016, the Hellcat build rate will be more than twice as high, Kuniskis said.

Increased 2016 Hellcat production will result in broader distribution for FCA's 2,400 Chrysler-Jeep-Dodge-Ram dealers.

Kuniskis said he hopes more Hellcats, and a different allocation and ordering process, will end some of the more egregious dealer practices that occurred with the muscle cars during the 2015 model year.

Dealers will receive their full 2016 model year allocation potential in August. The allocation and ordering will occur in two cycles, one beginning in August and the second beginning in February.

For example, if a dealer is allocated a total of 50 Hellcat Chargers and Challengers for the year, the first batch of 25 can be ordered beginning in August. After the dealer places his or her 25 orders, FCA's ordering system won't let him or her place another order until the allocation period reopens in February.

The dealer can lose some of those second potential 25 orders based on the dealer's Hellcat "days on lot" performance.

2016 Dodge Charger: Successful Marketing Campaign Promises Big Prospects!

2016 Dodge Charger: Successful Marketing Campaign Promises Big Prospects!

July 27, 2015

Very soon from now, Dodge is going to launch the next-gen Charger. The sports sedan is expected to sell very well and this is after we witnessed its commercial that has gone viral in recent days.

The new Charger commercial was aired on YouTube and it saw the Charger speaking Morse code. Like most other people that have viewed the video, we tried to crack the code. However, the result is something that we weren’t prepared for.

The Morse code basically translates to no meaning at all. The blinking Charger was saying that we have spent five minutes decoding a Morse code message from a Dodge YouTube Description.

In other words, the advert was nothing more than a troll. Even so, the commercial became super attractive and it puts the Charger on the limelight. With the public now becoming more aware of the Dodge Charger, there is no doubt that the vehicle is going to enjoy quick sales.

Demand fuels bigger plans for Dodge’s Hellcat

Demand fuels bigger plans for Dodge’s Hellcat

August 18, 2015

Dodge wasn’t prepared for the popularity of its new 707-horsepower SRT Hellcat models. All 2015 model-year cars already are spoken for, and dealers this week began ordering the 2016 models.

But even if it’s hard for enthusiasts to buy the current Dodge Challenger and Charger SRT Hellcats — named after their supercharged Hemi engine — the high-performance muscle cars have people talking about the brand. They are buying Dodge and Hellcat merchandise. And they’re attending Dodge events across the country, including an estimated 40,200 people at Woodward Dream Cruise events.

“It’s an absolute milestone of Dodge history,” Dodge and SRT President and CEO Tim Kuniskis said recently in his Auburn Hills office. “It’s the ’71 Hemi all over again.”

Demand for the cars led to months-long waiting lists and a small number of dealers engaging in irresponsible ordering practices, including accepting deposits and orders despite limited supply without telling customers their orders may not be filled.

Hundreds of orders for the 2015 model-year were canceled so Dodge could wipe the slate clean for the 2016 model-year. Dealers could start ordering 2016 model-year Hellcats on Monday under a new system that Kuniskis describes as a “radical change” that will not allow dealers to place more orders than they’ve been allocated.

The company is more than doubling Hellcat production for the 2016 model year. It would not release full production numbers for model-year 2015, but Kuniskis said the company had sold about 4,500 Hellcats through early August — mainly Challengers.

The automaker expanded dynamometer testing capabilities to meet that goal. Each Hellcat engine is tested for 42 minutes. Kuniskis said the extreme testing was the main “bottleneck” for the first model year.

“Our supply chain guys did, I think, an amazing job,” he said. “The number that we planned to build to where we actually ended is a huge increase. From Day One, they were pedaling hard to figure out how to make more.”

Fiat Chrysler on Monday told The Detroit News the price of both cars will go up for the 2016 model year: The Challenger SRT Hellcat will start at $62,495, up $2,500. The 2016 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat starts at $65,945, up $1,950. Dodge says the increased prices are due to enhanced standard equipment, including....

Dodge Hellcats get more features, higher prices for 2016

Dodge Hellcats get more features, higher prices for 2016

08/19/2015

Dodge confirmed to The Detroit News on Tuesday that the 2016 Dodge Charger Hellcat will arrive with an MSRP of $65,945, up $1,950 over last year's model. The Challenger Hellcat will retail from $62,495 for the new model year, or $2,500 more than 2015. Both prices exclude destination and a gas guzzler tax.

For that extra scratch, Hellcat buyers will receive more standard features, including navigation and Laguna leather. Of course a 707-horsepower supercharged V8 engine is also standard, making the Hellcat twins one of the best performance bargains going.

Dodge has pledged to increase Hellcat production for 2016 after a shortage for the 2015 model year, but the red hot muscle cars still promise to be in short supply thanks to booming demand. Dodge has also revised the Hellcat ordering process to eliminate unscrupulous dealers that were taking deposits for cars that they didn't actually have to sell.

Dodge hasn't announced an on-sale date for the 2016 Charger and Challenger Hellcats, but they should arrive on dealer lots within the next few weeks.

Dodge Wants to Make Every Car Into a Charger

August 27, 2015

By now, you’re probably well-aware of how awesome the Hellcat twins are. Even though the 2016 Hellcats are getting a small price increase, you still get an amazing amount of performance for your money. 707 horsepower is a heck of a lot of horsepower after all, and with an MSRP of less than $70,000, owning a Hellcat is something a regular person can reasonably dream of.

Thanks to the popularity of both the Challenger and Charger Hellcats, Dodge has increased production for 2016, and there are also rumors that there will be even more ultra-high-performance Hellcat versions of different models. But even if not every vehicle in the Dodge lineup ends up getting turned into a Hellcat, future products will all have a little bit of Hellcat DNA in them, according to Automotive News.

“Performance is good business,” said Tim Kuniskis, Dodge’s President and CEO. “But it’s way more than horsepower and quarter-mile times. Performance is an attitude first, and nobody can chase you on attitude.”

Kuniskis’ plan goes a little beyond building cars with attitude, though. He also holds the Charger up as the kind of vehicle he wants to see other cars in the lineup imitate.

“Our goal for Dodge, for every vehicle in our lineup, is to build every car as a Charger,” Kuniskis said. “Not to look like the Charger, but to do what Charger does compared to the rest of its segment. To be the square peg in the round hole that stands out from the crowd.”

If anything, it’s a move that will give the company an identity of its own for the first time in decades. In the past, Dodge has had a few strong-selling cars in its lineup, but it’s been a while since the brand had much cohesion across its entire stable. Now, when you’re talking about what makes a Dodge a Dodge, Kuniskis wants you to think “power and performance.”

It also helps that Dodge is making this move in a time when gas is much more affordable than it used to be.

“The timing of this move was great and OPEC cooperated by lowering the price of gas,” Ralph Mahalak Jr., an FCA dealer, said jokingly. “Everybody’s trying to make all of their cars performance oriented right now, and nobody’s really advertising that their car gets 35 [miles per gallon]. But the amount of [Internet] action that we’re getting on Chargers and Challengers right now is just crazy.”

At least for now, the plan appears to be working. Charger sales are up 2%, and Challenger sales are up even more – a whopping 38% through July. Its overall sales have been declining since 2013, but with the company’s lineup going through so many changes, it’s not surprising. According to Dodge, it’s even planned. By 2018, sales are expected to be back above 2013 levels, though, with a lineup that’s stronger than ever.

One of the more interesting aspects of Kuniskis’s plan to revitalize Dodge is that in a lot of ways, his strategy is the opposite of what you would expect it to be. Performance cars are typically expected to be slow sellers, and yet he wants to stake the brand’s identity on building those kinds of cars. Instead of failing, though, he’s actually succeeding, not just at selling cars but at getting people excited about the brand.

It’ll be interesting to see how a focus on power and performance translates to cars like the Dart and the Journey, but don’t pretend you wouldn’t want to drive an SRT or even a Hellcat version of either. After all, everyone deserves to be able to do a burnout, whether they’re driving a Challenger Hellcat or a midsize crossover SUV.

Dodge Brings Back Plum Crazy Challenger, Charger for 2016 Only

Dodge Brings Back Plum Crazy Challenger, Charger for 2016 Only

Dodge is offering its famous heritage hue Plum Crazy on both the Challenger and Charger, for one year only.

The new purple shade will be revealed on the cars this weekend at the Woodward Dream Cruise. Dodge says that Plum Crazy is one of the most highly requested colors for its cars, and has been since the color’s debut in 1970.

Order books for Plum Crazy Challengers and Chargers will open in September for those who have already purchased a car and in October for everyone else. It will only be available to order in the 2016 model year.

On the 2016 Charger, the SXT, R/T, SRT 392, Scat Pack and Hellcat can all be ordered with the special hue. For Challenger, it can be had on the STX, R/T, Shaker, Scat Pack, SRT 392 and Hellcat.

Since the Challenger and Charger returned to the market in 2006, just 11 percent of all the cars built are painted in a limited-edition hue, making them very collectable. If you look at just Plum Crazy, a scant 7,460 examples of this paint hue have left Dodge factories since 2006.

Viper Homecoming

Viper Homecoming

11/17/2015

“That car should be at home!”

There was an elderly gentleman beside me, grinning widely from the seat of a Chrysler 300 SRT8, at a set of lights near Conner Avenue and 8 Mile Road in Detroit. It was November, and a sopping wet Friday morning just after 7:30 a.m. I was in my Dodge Viper: a 2000 GTS Coupe. Black with grey stripes. This was the second time I’d ever driven it in any sort of precipitation.

“You gotta’ get her inside!” the man encouraged, still beaming, and still shaking his head. We were Mopar buddies at that moment, in the cold and wetness, right in the neighborhood where our respective rides have their roots.

“I know,” I replied, returning the contagious grin. “It’s not so great in the rain.”

Heavy winds had blown the fall leaves all over, and they blocked sewer drains and caused deep flooding to portions of the beaten-up roads. It had been pouring, biblically, for an hour or more – only just letting up recently.

Driving a 2000 Dodge Viper GTS on a cold and rainy November morning is as stupid and dangerous as mowing your lawn in open-toe roller skates. You’d need to be precise, exact, and very careful. One wrong move, and there could be a real mess.

And, like some of its vintage, my Viper isn’t entirely waterproof. Mainly due to the tendency of the hinges to shift slightly as the car ages, the doors sag a touch, reducing pressure between the window and weather seals and letting an occasional lick of water past the glass and onto my leg. Part of my springtime maintenance ritual includes re-adjusting the doors, which sag back down again by the end of the summer.

It’s part of the charm.

8 Mile Road and Conner Avenue have been home to Conner Avenue Assembly, aka, the birthplace of the Dodge Viper, for over 20 years. Chrysler bought the building from Champion in 1995 and turned it into a specialized assembly plant. At 392,000 square feet, the former spark-plug factory looks big, especially next to a residential neighborhood. Thing is, it’s more of a workshop than a factory, and a fraction of the size of a typical automotive mass-production facility.

Connor Avenue Assembly is 9 hours from my current home in Sudbury, Ontario, but only about 20 minutes and a border crossing from the neighbourhood in Windsor, Ontario, where I was born, and where I spent my early years.

Dodge is answering enthusiast demand for Plum Crazy exterior paint with an additional one-month run of the legendary and limited-edition high-impact hue

January 8, 2016 , Auburn Hills, Mich. -

For more than a year, Dodge Challenger and Charger SRT Hellcat models — the fastest and most powerful muscle cars ever with 707 supercharged HEMI® horsepower each — have stormed roadways and drag strips with acceleration blasts to 60 mph in the low 3-second range, generated more than 61 million sensational YouTube video views around the globe, enabled an entirely new generation of Dodge enthusiasts and now for 2016 have been rewarded with their very own Dodge performance stripes.

“The SRT Hellcat models are America’s ultimate performance car duo, and these already legendary Challenger and Charger models have given Dodge more than the title of ‘fastest and most powerful muscle cars ever,’ they continue to drive sales records, increase brand profitability, draw new and younger customers to the brand and fuel interest across our entire vehicle lineup – achievements worthy of earning an exclusive set of performance stripes,” said Tim Kuniskis, Head of Passenger Car Brands – Dodge, SRT, Chrysler and FIAT, FCA – North America.

All-new SRT Hellcat stripes further Dodge brand’s instant personalization from the factory

Adding even more Dodge attitude for 2016, all-new dual full-length body stripes give Challenger and Charger SRT Hellcat models a factory-customized look. Finished with a carbon fiber pattern, the dual stripe design covers front and rear fascias, roof and deck lid, plus a tailored design around the SRT Hellcat’s signature NACA duct hood vent to emphasize both Challenger and Charger models’ functional yet aggressive design.

Ordering for the SRT Hellcat dual body stripe on these ultra-high performance Dodge Challenger and Charger models will start in January with a U.S. Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $995.

In addition, Dodge has unleashed the full color palette with the all-new SRT Hellcat dual body stripe to maximize Challenger and Charger’s full personalization potential. The color palette includes Bright White Clear Coat, Redline Red, Pitch Black Clear Coat, Granite Crystal Metallic Clear Coat, Billet Silver Metallic Clear Coat, Jazz Blue Pearl Coat, TorRed Clear Coat, Ivory White Tri-coat, Maximum Steel Metallic and limited-edition Plum Crazy Pearl Coat.

Plum Crazy extended for one more month of production
Given the exceptionally strong demand for Plum Crazy, the Dodge team is responding immediately to enthusiast demand and has extended the production of one of its most desired historic paint colors for the Dodge Challenger and Charger.

Initially, ordering for Plum Crazy was scheduled to end in December 2015. But exceptionally strong customer demand, plus the opportunity to pair this legendary high-impact hue with the new SRT Hellcat stripe, means dealers will be able to continue ordering the high-impact, highly popular color through January.

Since 1970, desire for this heritage hue continues to get stronger than ever – as the signature paint color is directly associated with high collectability and the famed “Mopar-or-no-car” legacy. Today, Dodge is offering Plum Crazy across the widest performance range of Challenger and Charger models ever, which includes:

2016 Dodge Challenger models:

Challenger SXT Plus
