Fiat Chrysler Files Trademark Application For Jeep ‘Wrangler Africa’

— Aug 27, 2015

Those in-the-know concerning all things Jeep might well remember the rugged, trail-ready “Jeep Wrangler Africa” concept which showed back in March, with durable steel wheels, a 2.8-liter turbo-diesel, and 35-inch terrain tires, just to name a few of its essential, function-over-form pieces.

Now, we’ve uncovered a USPTO document which shows that Fiat Chrysler filed a trademark application for the “Wrangler Africa” name shortly after the concept showed, on April 14th, 2015.

Trademark Application For ‘Desert Hawk’

Fiat Chrysler Files Trademark Application For ‘Desert Hawk’

08/27/2015

Moving right along through our veritable wealth of recently-acquired Fiat Chrysler trademark filings – which includes applications for the names “Hornet” like the 2006 Dodge concept, and both “Wrangler Africa” and “Chief” like the Jeep concepts from March – we arrive at yet another Jeep concept: the Renegade “Desert Hawk.”

Interestingly enough, the name “Desert Hawk” is already in-use by Lockheed Martin, and was given to a very small unmanned aircraft used for surveillance. Needless to say, Fiat Chrysler likely has no plans to get into the drone-making business.

Instead, the Jeep Renegade “Desert Hawk” was a concept unveiled earlier this year, alongside the aforementioned Wrangler Africa and Cherokee Chief. The Desert Hawk concept builds upon the Trailhawk trim level of the Jeep Renegade, adding “Desert Tan” paint, some decals, a roof rack, and a trailer hitch.

This is quite obviously the model to which Fiat Chrysler’s recent “Desert Hawk” trademark filing applies. As to the likelihood of production, we’d almost consider it a sure thing; it’s much closer in appearance and components to an already-available model, and it would surely be a hit among offroading enthusiasts enamored by the “cute ute’s” subcompact size and appearance.

Jeep® Brand: Freedom, Adventure, Authenticity and Passion

All-new Jeep® Renegade: most capable small SUV ever combines Jeep heritage with cool new styling to appeal to youthful and adventurous customers
Five 2016 Jeep SUVs achieve at least 30 miles per gallon (mpg)

September 1, 2015 , Auburn Hills, Mich. -

Now in its eighth decade of legendary heritage, the Jeep® brand continues to deliver an open invitation to live life to the fullest by offering a full line of vehicles that provide owners with a sense of safety and security to handle any adventure with confidence. Since 1941, when the first Jeep vehicle was born, the brand has continued to engineer and produce unique, versatile and capable vehicles.

Since its inception three-quarters of a century ago, the Jeep brand has been closely linked with the ideas of freedom, authenticity, adventure and passion:

Freedom: Jeep vehicles have long been known as the “original fun and freedom machines,” those that “go anywhere and do anything.” And from its beginning, freedom was at the forefront of the Jeep brand, given the role Jeep vehicles played in World War II
Adventure: Doers, dreamers, discovery — “going anywhere, doing anything”
Authenticity: Being true to its heritage with an unwavering commitment to leading capability and strength engineered into all Jeep vehicles
Passion: Enthusiasm held by Jeep team members and vehicle owners for the unique lifestyle and vehicles offered by the Jeep brand

In 2014, the Jeep brand set its third consecutive all-time global sales record with 1,017,109 vehicles sold, bettering the brand’s previous annual highs of 731,565 units sold in 2013 and 701,626 units sold in 2012. 2014 marked the fifth consecutive year of Jeep sales increases globally and in the U.S.

In 2015, the Jeep brand expanded its lineup to the small SUV segment with the introduction of the all-new Jeep Renegade, which delivers a unique combination of best-in-class off-road capability, open-air freedom and convenience, a segment-first nine-speed automatic transmission that contributes to outstanding on-road driving dynamics, world-class refinement, two fuel-efficient MultiAir engines with more than 30 miles per gallon (mpg), and a host of innovative safety and advanced technology features. Renegade marks the fifth SUV in the Jeep lineup to achieve at least 30 miles per gallon (mpg).

With the greatest range of SUVs under one brand, the Jeep vehicle portfolio consists of:

Cherokee: The mid-size SUV that offers legendary Jeep Trail Rated 4x4 capability combined with
no-compromise on-road driving dynamics and fuel economy improved up to 45 percent versus its predecessor. The Cherokee delivers numerous innovative features, including a segment-first nine-speed automatic transmission, three new 4x4 systems, rear-axle disconnect, and a host of advanced safety, security and technology features

Compass: A compact SUV with sophisticated, premium design, unsurpassed 4x4 fuel economy, freedom, utility, and Jeep 4x4 cachet and capability – all at a terrific value

Grand Cherokee: The most-awarded SUV ever, balancing legendary Jeep capability with world-class craftsmanship, premium on-road driving dynamics and an array of advanced safety, security and technology features

Grand Cherokee SRT: The best-performing Jeep vehicle ever, achieving 0-60 mph in 4.8 seconds, quarter mile in mid-13 second range and top speed of 160 mph, Grand Cherokee SRT is a powerful, refined, luxurious and technically advanced premium SUV

Patriot: A compact SUV delivering the fun, adventure and value only Jeep can offer, with unsurpassed 4x4 fuel economy and segment-leading capability. Jeep Patriot is the best-priced SUV in America

Renegade: The newest addition to the Jeep vehicle lineup, Renegade enters the growing small SUV segment. The most capable small SUV ever, Renegade boasts legendary Jeep capability, superior driving dynamics, cool and youthful styling, more than 30 mpg fuel economy, and numerous segment-exclusive technologies once found only on premium SUVs

Wrangler: The icon of the Jeep brand, it remains true to its heritage as the original fun-and-freedom machine. Wrangler features a recently updated new interior and available premium body-color hardtop, along with the FCA US LLC 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine that delivers fuel efficiency, power and on-road refinement

Wrangler Unlimited: The only four-door 4x4 convertible SUV on the market with room for five adult passengers, Wrangler Unlimited also features an available premium hardtop and the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine.

Whether identified by their ownership of multiple Jeep vehicles, or their regular attendance at branded events, or by their abundance of Jeep gear – branded products from clothing to baby strollers – Jeep owners all have one common trait: a vehicle providing benchmark all-weather capability that allows them to go anywhere and do anything. It’s not unusual to see Jeep vehicles sporting a bumper sticker that reads, “It’s a Jeep thing…you wouldn’t understand.”

To meet consumer demand around the world, all Jeep models are sold outside North America – and all are available in right-hand-drive versions and with gasoline and diesel powertrain options.

Jeep Brand Finally Coming to India

Jeep Brand Finally Coming to India in The Year 2016

09/09/2015

The Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) is planning to roll out the new Jeep brand early next year. After the numerous delays, the company has finally made up the mind to launch its Jeep vehicles in 2016. The new cars will be retailed via 5 exclusive dealerships said, Mr Kevin Flynn President and Managing Director, FCA APAC. The company is also expected to officially unveil the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Wrangler SUVs in the forthcoming 2016 Indian Auto Expo to be held in February next year.

The company will bring these products on the Indian Shores via CBU (completely Built Units) route. The firm is planning to establish distinct sales network in about five different major cities in the first phase. Mr Kevin Flynn also added that they think they are on the right path in India that they are bringing the Jeep brand into the country and have plans to make India a global hub for the particular brand.

The company is planning to invest INR 1500- 2500 crores in the country to further help in manufacturing new cars and also to set up the new production facility for the Jeep SUVs in India. The Jeep Grand Cherokee, one of the much-anticipated SUVs will compete against Honda CRV and Toyota Fortuner in the segment. The price tag for the vehicle is expected to be around INR 20-25 lac, the company has decided to export the product in various other countries like Australia, South Africa and the UK.

Fiat has also announced to venture with Tata Motors for supporting the production of the Jeep model in the country. Mr Kevin said that they are expecting to make the network more strong by about 20-25 dealerships. On talking about the local assembly of the Grand Cherokee and the Wrangler Brands, he said that the work is under progress and he would like to see that happen soon.

The facility at the Ranjangaon Maharashtra will be the 4th plant outside the United States for the bulk production of the Jeep vehicles. Currently, Fiat has the capacity of manufacturing about 1.35 lac cars per year from the plant. The company as hit by the coarse patch in the country with slow sales and negative publicity is now working hard to change the opinion of the population. Commenting on the situation, Mr Kevin said that they have identified the hurdles and they are now working to re-establish themselves in the country. He also added that the company will roll out a new brand campaign later this month in order to make the Fiat brand ‘resonate’ with the customers of India. And further they are working hard on the future product plan.

The new Jeep will be available in the 4WD set-up and as the rumors are to be believed, the car will get 1.5 litre Multi-Jet engine which the company is reportedly developing for India. There is also expectation for the 2.0 litre Multi-Jet mill which will be mated to 4WD setup. The later will be shared from Tata’s SUV which the company is preparing against the Fortuner.

Fiat recently introduced the Abarth brand in the country, the company launched the new Abarth 595 Competizione at the price tag of INR 29.85 lac. The car is powered by the 1.4 litre T-jet Turbo-petrol engine that can produce the output of 158 bhp at 5500 rpm and the peak torque of 201 Nm at 2750 rpm. This output is when the car is running on the normal mode while the torque is increased to 230 when it gets into the ‘Sports’ mode. The performance car come mated to Automated Manual Transmission with a manual override system.

Cherokee & Renegade 'Night Eagle' Editions

Jeep’s Sturdy Cherokee & Renegade 'Night Eagle' Editions Look Ready To Rumble

September 15, 2015

The 'Night Eagle' special editions of the Cherokee & Renegade SUVs are based on the Longitude mid trim level and feature black styling cues as well as rather audacious personalities.

The Renegade Night Eagle already had a pretty unique style, and now thanks to the satin-finished gray elements (Jeep badge, fog light frames, roof bars) as well as the exclusive 17" black alloys, it genuinely looks more interesting than standard spec models. The special edition version also introduces a new Volcano Sand matte paintwork, complementing the other four available colors: Carbon Black, Alpine White, Glacier Silver and Solar Yellow.

Jeep brought a Volcano Sand-liveried Renegade Night Eagle to Frankfurt, sporting a 2.0 liter 140 HP diesel engine, working together with a 6-speed manual transmission and the Active Drive 4x4 system. Inside, you'll find a leather steering wheel, exclusive fabric seats with electric lumbar adjustment for the driver, UConnect with 5" screen, manual climate control, 3.5" TFT instrument panel, cruise control and rear parking sensors.

The Renegade Night Eagle can also be configured with either a 120 HP or a 140 HP 2.0 liter Multijet engine, a 120 HP 1.6 liter Multijet engine or a 140 HP 1.4 liter Multijet engine - depending on the market.

The same styling cues pretty much apply to the Cherokee Night Eagle, except that this one comes with 18" alloys and different colors such as Black, White, Billet Silver and Granite Crystal. Inside, there's an 8.4" UConnect sat-nav system with 9 speakers and a subwoofer, plus leather steering wheel, two-zone climate control, electric tailgate and rear parking sensors.

Under the hood you'll find the new 2.2 liter MultiJet II turbo diesel engine, good for 185 HP or 200 HP (depending on the market).

The Billet Silver model show in Frankfurt is the 200 HP version and it comes with bi-xenon headlights, front & rear parking sensors, UConnect sat-nav, automatic headlights, rain sensing wipers, leather seats, leather steering wheel, two-zone climate control, power liftgate and power folding mirrors.

Sales will start this year, with Jeep to build a limited number of Night Eagle special edition models.

October 19, 2015 , Changsha, China -

Jeep® Cherokee, the first locally produced sport-utility vehicle (SUV) of GAC Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (GAC FCA), officially rolled off the assembly line today at the company’s Changsha plant. The newly established GAC FCA Automobiles Sales Co., Ltd. will be responsible for sales of the new product.

Senior government officials and company leaders attended today’s roll-off ceremony, including Xu Shousheng (Secretary of CPC Hunan Provincial Committee and Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Provincial People’s Congress), Du Jiahao (Deputy Secretary of CPC Hunan Provincial Committee and Governor of Hunan Province), Zhang Fangyou (Chairman of the GAC Group), Zeng Qinghong (General Manager of the GAC Group), Mike Manley (Head of Jeep Brand and Ram Brand, FCA – Global and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the APAC region); and Feng Xingya (Executive Deputy General Manager of the GAC Group and Chairman of GAC FCA).

The General Manager of the GAC Group Mr. Zeng Qinghong said, “The roll out of the Chinese-produced Jeep Cherokee is a major step in the deepened cooperation between the GAC Group and the FCA Group. Along with the localization of the Jeep brand and the introduction of Chrysler models in the future, our brand combination and product portfolio will further raise our business, and lead to a balanced and diversified development with Western partners of the GAC Group to expand our industrial distribution, deepening the implementation of our “3+e” strategy. For GAC FCA, Jeep has achieved a rapid market share increase, meaning that the localization of Jeep Cherokee has shifted GAC FAC’s simple trade model toward production, manufacturing, sales and after-sales on the entire value chain, and will ultimately move the formation of research and development, manufacturing and sales to a complete and comprehensive automobile supply chain model. Following the SOP of Jeep Cherokee, GAC FCA will form an automobile industrial chain integrating R&D, manufacturing and sales. GAC FCA will step forward toward a new horizon.”

“Today marks a milestone in the history of our brand,” said Mike Manley, Head of Jeep Brand and Ram Brand, FCA – Global and COO of the APAC region. “The Jeep brand was the first western automaker to produce vehicles in China more than 30 years ago. Today, with the support of our GAC partners, our brand is back to its rightful place in this market. The Jeep Cherokee is our best-selling vehicle worldwide and now is being produced in China for China, to the world quality standards that Chinese consumers demand. Local production allows us to be closer to our customers and to improve our competitive position in the market place. We thank GAC for their true partnership, as we look forward to starting production of other Jeep models here in China.”

The locally produced Jeep Cherokee is expected to be in full production in November and expects to begin deliveries before the end of the year. The Jeep Cherokee 2.4L version will be made available first, followed by the 2.0L, offering customers more choices and a better value.

Positioned as the authentic SUV for city life, the Jeep Cherokee has a price range of RMB 200,000 to RMB 300,000. The Changsha-produced Jeep Cherokee not only retains the features and advantages of today’s import models, but delivers the on-road driving dynamics, features, fuel economy and 4x4 capability that mid-size SUV customers desire.

With the first locally produced Jeep Cherokee, GAC FCA has officially introduced the Jeep brand to the rapidly expanding Chinese market, marking its historic return to the mainstream SUV segment. By the end of 2016, the Jeep brand’s portfolio in China will consist of three new models, including the locally produced Jeep Cherokee and Jeep Renegade, offering consumers the most comprehensive SUV lineup.

Today, the company also began accepting orders from dealers. As an added convenience for consumers, GAC FCA launched a pre-sale program called “Jump Start,” through which consumers can place an order online. For more information about how to place an order through this system, as well as many more offers, please visit Jeep???suv??????????-Jeep??????.

The GAC FCA Changsha plant, the birthplace of the locally produced Jeep Cherokee, is the first in China to adopt the exacting World Class Manufacturing (WCM) standards. WCM is a methodology that focuses on reducing waste, increasing productivity and improving quality and safety in a systematic and organized way. WCM engages the workforce to provide and implement suggestions on how to improve their jobs and their plants, promoting a sense of ownership. The GAC FCA Changsha facility is one of the most technologically advanced manufacturing plants for FCA globally. Total investment for the 750,000-square-meter facility is approximately RMB 5 billion.

‘He can’t believe that he lived’

December 11 2015

‘He can’t believe that he lived’

There are many reasons to purchase one vehicle or another. Style, driver and passenger comfort, mpg, torque and horsepower and tech features are of varying importance, depending on the individual. Of course, price is nearly always a consideration.

Safety is too, but it’s one you really hope you don’t need. It’s like car insurance.

You hope you never need it BUT if you do, it’s priceless.

As was the case for Todd Garrison of Cincinnati, when he bought a 2003 Jeep® Wrangler for his 16-year-old son Elijah, when he started driving.

“I am a 2014 JKU owner, my wife has a 2014 Cherokee. I insisted that [Elijah] have a Wrangler for his first vehicle (for the very reason I am typing this email) and he loves them as much as I do,” he wrote us.

“Elijah was driving to work Saturday morning [on Dec. 5] when his (passenger) side tire got off the road and he over corrected. When his driver side tire hit the grass, it struck a tree stump, causing his passenger side bumper to dig into the ground. That flipped him over, twisting to the passenger side rear bumper and exploded the hard top.Garrison-5“

“His Wrangler then flipped again over on the passenger side and windshield portion of the roll cage where it went airborne. It landed on all four tires facing the opposite direction that he was traveling in someone’s driveway.

“As you can tell this was a very violent accident, but … he lived! Not only that, he walked away with just a mild concussion where he proceeded to call me himself to tell me what happened.

He got emotional at the scene, and I thought it was because he totaled his baby, an extremely clean 2003 TJ that we found 7 hours away. I was wrong. While his heart hurts for his Jeep, he was emotional because looking at it he can’t believe that he lived let alone walked away.”

Rugged Wrangler is Jeep's Greatest Creation

Why the Rugged Wrangler is Jeep's Greatest Creation

Ramble on with the classic Wrangler, which happens to be more popular than ever.

12/12/2015

Jeep has built its brand on the authenticity of its off-roaders. The rugged vehicles started as real-life Army equipment and in civilian life became peerless beasts that perform heroics on Nevada’s tortuous Rubicon Trail and the boulders of Moab, Utah.

But the coolest part of a Jeep is its egalitarianism. Nearly anyone who can afford a new car can afford a Wrangler. The popular four-door Wrangler Unlimited starts at $27,295, which is well below the average $33,560 purchase price of a new car, according to Kelley Blue Book. And the Wrangler is having a moment: Jeep sales are up 23 percent compared with 2014, and the Wrangler breaks sales records every month.

What’s the attraction? The Wrangler is the green plastic Army man writ large. Jeep’s Mopar parts division has a catalog of add-ons to make the Wrangler even cooler, tougher, and more personalized, and there’s an entire industry of other companies dedicated to the same cause. “The Wrangler may be the most customized vehicle in the world,” crows Jeep’s director of product marketing, Jim Morrison.

And what about drivers who don’t have more money to spend after they buy their Wrangler? That’s easy, too: Owners can customize by taking parts away from the Jeep. Buy a throwback-style Wrangler Willys Wheeler Edition in tank-green paint or an Army-inspired Freedom Edition to start, then take off anything that wouldn’t have been there when Jeeps landed in Normandy, Busan, or Saigon.

The roof comes right off. So do the doors. If you promise not to drive it on the street, you can fold down the windshield. The end caps even come off the bumpers, letting the meaty tires attack the terrain without any interference from the vehicle’s bodywork.

Now you’ve got a serious off-road machine that truly looks the part. Jeep knows people love the Wrangler’s heritage, which is why it builds its own fantasies, like the Staff Car concept the company introduced at the 2015 Moab Easter Jeep Safari. The Staff Car is a four-door Wrangler Unlimited that has the middle door B pillar cut out, a retro canvas roof installed, and old-school 16-inch steel wheels, 35-inch Firestone NDT military tires, and a mounted vintage exterior gas can.

The Staff Car even has a standard Wrangler 290-horsepower V-6 engine and six-speed manual transmission that lets you shift gears just like Granddad did, though Wranglers in the showroom also offer a five-speed automatic transmission. “It is a nice reflection of the people on the Jeep staff and our support for the brand’s military connection,” says Morrison.

That may be—but Morrison admits there’s a deeper truth to the iconic brand’s concept vehicles: “We do those because they are fun.”

Jeep Boosting Sales to Car-Rental Firms

Jeep Boosting Sales to Car-Rental Firms
Top-selling brand is turning to fleet buyers, as dealer inventories of pricey sport-utility rise

Dec. 28, 2015

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV’s Jeep is ending 2015 the hottest vehicle brand among individual consumers while deepening its reliance on rental fleet sales in a potentially risky strategy that could end up damaging its image.

Jeep sales to such fleet customers surged this year through October, helping explain Fiat Chrysler’s ability to continue reporting monthly sales gains for nearly six years. The 74-year-old brand also has benefited from inexpensive gasoline and the nation’s booming demand for rugged sport-utility vehicles.

The latest registration data, compiled by researcher R.L. Polk, indicates deliveries of Jeeps to rental companies in the first 10 months this year shot up nearly 57% over the same period a year earlier, outpacing gains reported by most rivals, according to data obtained by The Wall Street Journal. R.L. Polk doesn’t disclose publicly its brand-by-brand registration data.

Dealer inventories of most Jeep models are bulging even as U.S. car sales are heading to a record annual pace. Five of the six Jeep models on sale in the U.S. have more than 70 days’ supply of inventory, above the industry’s 62 days’ average, according to car information provider WardsAuto.com. The rugged Wrangler is the only model below the industry average.

The practice of selling lots of cars to rental firms has long been considered risky because it can dent resale values and cheapen a brand’s image. Some auto makers, including Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. ’s Subaru brand and Honda Motor Co. , typically avoid selling cars to rental fleets.

Through October, nearly 80,000 Jeeps, or about 11.2% of the brand’s total U.S. volume for that period, were sold to rental car companies.

Jeep’s total sales increased 23.3% through November—helped this year by the new compact Renegade—and jumped 65% between 2011 and 2014, helping fuel Fiat Chrysler’s continued string of overall monthly volume gains that dates back to the beginning of the decade.

Fiat Chrysler spokesman Ralph Kisiel said the small Jeep Cherokee crossover, introduced in October 2013, also wasn’t included in the 2014 model year’s contracts with rental agencies, which are typically completed in August. Because they were included in 2015 contracts, it led to a sizable increase this year.

Rental companies, such as Enterprise Rent-A-Car or Hertz Global Holdings Inc., are in the mood to buy, having purchased 6.2% more vehicles through October than the same period in 2014. That compares with a 5.8% increase for the total market over the same period. Rental cars overall make up about 11% of U.S. total car and light-truck sales.

While salting vehicles into Dollar Thrifty or National Car Rental fleets helps put a brand’s cars in front of vacationers, business travelers or car owners waiting for collision repairs, too many sales to fleet buyers can be viewed as dumping unwanted products.

“In 2015, we began local manufacturing in Brazil and returned to local manufacturing in China after an absence of nearly a decade, further globalizing the Jeep brand,” Manley added. “Now, in 2016, we look forward to celebrating the 75th Anniversary of Jeep, and continuing to deliver a full lineup of class-leading capable and efficient SUVs.”

Jeep 2015 sales rose 56 percent in the Europe, Middle East & Africa region and 135 percent in Latin America.

December marked the highest monthly sales ever for the Jeep brand, both globally (127,879 units) and in the U.S. (89,654 units).

British Jeep Wrangler double-cab

British Jeep Wrangler double-cab ute to launch in New Zealand

01/19/2016

AEV Wrangler ute is an aftermarket conversion that gets the official Jeep importer's stamp of approval for NZ.

If there is one thing that Jeep fans have been screaming out for, it's a pickup version of the iconic Wrangler. From the middle of next month, Kiwi Jeep buyers will be able to have just that.

Jeep has acknowledged potential demand for a pickup with some fantastic concepts over the years, but it has yet to come up with a real production vehicle. That's where American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) comes in. The US company has been building the Wrangler Brute double cab, a pickup conversion of the five-door Wrangler Unlimited, for a number of years now.

So it's not an official factory model. But from February, it will be sold in NZ through official channels: Fiat Chrysler NZ will be importing and distributing the AEV Wrangler Brute double cab through its dealer network.

With a lengthened wheelbase to accommodate the injection moulded cored composite tray, the Brute loses none of the Wrangler Unlimited's interior space, but adds the convenience of a 1525mm/1550mm wellside deck.

The Brute double cab is powered by the same 3.6-litre petrol V6 as the standard Wrangler Unlimited.

While Fiat Chrysler NZ has confirmed the Brute double cab is coming, it has yet to reveal pricing or specification. The current flagship of the Wrangler Unlimited range, the Overland, costs $69,990.
