Mopar Announces Initiatives to Support NHRA Racers in 2017
Mopar and Dodge Team Up for Factory-backed Support of Amateur Racers

Mopar and Dodge team up to support three factory-backed Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak cars in ‘17

“Magneti Marelli Offered by Mopar Drag Pak Rewards” program supports modern-day package car amateur racers

FCA US LLC engineers to provide racers technical support at all 24 NHRA Nationals events in 2017

New Dodge brand exhibit to join Mopar display trailer on NHRA Manufacturers Midway at 15 Nationals events

Mopar HEMI® Challenge, Sportsman Appreciation Night and Tom Hoover Challenge also continue in 2017

December 21, 2016 , Auburn Hills, Mich. -

The Mopar brand is adding horsepower to its support of amateur, non-professional NHRA Sportsman racers with a slate of new programs and resources for the 2017 season. Initiatives include factory-backing for select Mopar and Dodge NHRA Sportsman teams, a new “Magneti Marelli Offered by Mopar Drag Pak Rewards” program, technical at-track assistance for grassroots racers and increased outreach and communication with Sportsman competitors.

Mopar will team up with the Dodge brand to provide factory-backed support for three supercharged, 354-cubic-inch Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak NHRA Sportsman machines that will carry the official Mopar and Dodge colors next year. In addition, the new “Magneti Marelli Offered by Mopar Drag Pak Rewards” program will provide monetary awards to the dedicated amateur racers who compete in the Mopar brand’s modern-day package car, the Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak.

Also new for next season, FCA US LLC engineers will attend each of the 24 NHRA Nationals events to provide all Mopar-powered NHRA Sportsman racers with technical advice and guidance. Unlike professional drivers in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, amateur NHRA Sportsman racers often compete with little or no sponsorship, supporting their weekends at the dragstrip via their own funds.

“Amateur Sportsman racers fuel our brand’s involvement in NHRA competition,” said Bill Harry, Head of Marketing, Mopar. “In 2017, we’re backing up those words with new initiatives that prove our commitment to our most dedicated and passionate brand ambassadors. We’re also very excited to work more closely with the Dodge brand in providing select factory-backed support for Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak drivers. This enhanced commitment, combined with our championship-winning relationship with Don Schumacher Racing in Funny Car and Top Fuel, demonstrates that we are focused on NHRA involvement that makes the most sense for the Mopar brand.”

In addition to teaming with Mopar in factory support of a trio of Dodge Challenger Drag Pak machines, Dodge will also introduce a new brand display, located next to the Mopar trailer on NHRA Manufacturers Midway, at 15 of 24 NHRA Nationals events.

“The Dodge brand has a long, proud tradition in NHRA drag racing dating back to the early 1960s,” said Tim Kuniskis, Head of Passenger Cars, Dodge, SRT, Chrysler and Fiat, FCA North America. “We look forward to extending that tradition by joining forces with Mopar to provide support for select Dodge Challenger Drag Pak NHRA Sportsman teams for the 2017 season. Our new Dodge display at 15 NHRA events will also give us a great opportunity to connect with the performance-loving enthusiasts who truly embrace and identify with our brand.”

Factory-backed Mopar Dodge Drag Paks

In 2016, Joe Welch Racing debuted a 354-cubic-inch Gen III HEMI® engine-powered Drag Pak, wrapped in official Mopar and Dodge graphics, at the NHRA U.S. Nationals. For 2017, the team will add another car to form a formidable pair of factory-backed Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak entries.

One Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak will be steered by Michigan native and team owner Welch. The seat of the second Joe Welch Racing Drag Pak machine will be reserved for a Mopar and Dodge-sponsored, nitro-fueled star from the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series. The driver, who will compete at select events, will be announced in the near future.

The third Mopar and Dodge-backed entry will boast a championship pedigree — the elite team of owner Jeff Teuton and driver Kevin Helms. The duo, who partnered to capture the 2015 NHRA Stock Eliminator World Championship in a Teuton-owned Drag Pak, will seek to reclaim that title-winning magic in a supercharged, official Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak entry.

The three factory-backed Drag Pak cars will also be used in a developmental capacity, yielding information and data to help grow the Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak program, which has produced 260 factory-built race cars since it was introduced in late 2008.

“Magneti Marelli Offered by Mopar Drag Pak Rewards” Program

The “Magneti Marelli Offered by Mopar Drag Pak Rewards” program will offer payouts to the Top 20 Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak drivers, as determined by the program’s points system. Points will be awarded for entries, runner-up finishes and victories. Rewards will also be offered for a Factory Stock Showdown NHRA Nationals event win and a Stock Eliminator or Super Stock World Championship claimed by a Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak competitor. The “Magneti Marelli Offered by Mopar Drag Pak Rewards” program will commence in February at the NHRA Winternationals in Pomona, California. More information will be shared via the twice monthly “Mopar Speed” e-newsletter to be distributed early next year.

Mopar Contingency Program, HEMI Challenge, Sportsman Appreciation Night Continue in ‘17
In addition to the “Magneti Marelli Offered by Mopar Drag Pak Rewards” program, Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak drivers will also be eligible for awards under the long-running Mopar Contingency Program. The program — open to all Mopar-powered Sportsman racers — rewards competitors who compete with specified Mopar parts and carry the Mopar Contingency decal on their race vehicle.

Also, returning for 2017 are the Mopar HEMI Challenge and the Mopar Sportsman Appreciation Night, two programs that have become mainstays of the premier event on the NHRA circuit, the U.S. Nationals.

Back at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis for the 17th year in 2017, the Mopar HEMI Challenge showcases SS/AH Sportsman class competitors in head-to-head battle on the quarter-mile. The event features the classic muscle cars that contributed to the brand’s legendary reputation and success at the drag strip. The 1968 Dodge Dart and Plymouth Barracuda “package cars,” factory-built for the strip, were precursors to the Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak vehicles that compete today in NHRA Stock Eliminator, Factory Stock Showdown and Super Stock.

Mopar will also recognize its grassroots racers at the brand’s annual Mopar Sportsman Appreciation Night at the U.S. Nationals. The event will offer free food, drinks, tech seminars, Q&A sessions and multiple Mopar prize giveaways to showcase the brand’s appreciation for its dedicated brand ambassadors.

The Tom Hoover Sportsman Challenge will continue to recognize the outstanding Mopar Sportsman racer who accumulates the most points over a full season while competing in Stock or Super Stock Class racing. The award is named after legendary racer and engineer Tom Hoover, acknowledged as the father of the 426 Gen II HEMI engine. The annual winner receives a cash award and a custom trophy.

About Mopar Motorsports

The Mopar brand’s commitment to professional motorsports competition was established in the 1950s when a partnership ignited with drag racing pioneer Don Garlits, resulting in the breaking of numerous speed and performance barriers in HEMI-powered vehicles over the next several decades. In 2016, thanks to Don Schumacher Racing driver Ron Capps, Mopar captured its fourth NHRA Funny Car World Championship in the last six years. As Mopar celebrates 80 years as a brand in 2017, it will focus its NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series efforts on NHRA Funny Car and, with rising star Leah Pritchett, NHRA Top Fuel Dragster. Mopar will also bolster its commitment to NHRA Sportsman racing with new contingency rewards, factory support and at-track technical advice and guidance.

Dodge Extends Sponsorship of NHRA

Dodge Extends Sponsorship of NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Event at Maple Grove Raceway; Expands Involvement in Sportsman Ranks

March 7, 2017 , Auburn Hills, Mich. -

Dodge has extended its agreement as the title rights sponsor of the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event at Maple Grove Raceway for the 2017 season, Dodge and NHRA announced today.

The 33rd annual Dodge NHRA Nationals will be held Sept. 21-24 and serves as the second race in the six-race NHRA Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship. The event will be a key stop for racers who are battling for a world championship at the conclusion of the season.

“The Dodge NHRA Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway is one of the premiere events on the NHRA Drag Racing Series calendar,” said Brad Gerber, NHRA vice president and chief development officer. “The fan base in the region is one of the most dedicated in the country and fans will witness top NHRA racers battling during the countdown to the championship.”

Dodge’s commitment to the sport of NHRA Drag Racing continues to be solidified as those who compete with Dodge vehicles in the Super Stock and Stock classes in the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series will be eligible for additional bonus money during the course of the year. Newly introduced for 2017, the Dodge Top Finisher honor awards $500 each to the Stock and Super Stock drivers in a Dodge or Plymouth vehicle who advance the farthest during eliminations at each of the 24 NHRA National events.

"Extending the Dodge partnership with the NHRA and Maple Grove Raceway is an easy decision. Dodge belongs at the drag strip," said Tim Kuniskis, Head of Passenger Car Brands – Dodge, SRT, Chrysler and FIAT, FCA - North America. "The raw horsepower and energy that shakes the championship-winning Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car at NHRA weekends inspires the horsepower and performance feel found across the full line of Dodge vehicles.”

A new Dodge exhibit will also be displayed on Manufacturers Midway at 15 events this year. In addition, the second annual Mopar Mega Block Party free fan-admission event will take place on Thursday, Sept. 21 in conjunction with the Dodge NHRA Nationals.

NHRA presents 24 national events featuring the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series and NHRA J&A Service Pro Mod Drag Racing Series. NHRA provides competition opportunities for drivers of all levels in the NHRA Summit Racing Series and the NHRA Drags: Street Legal Style presented by AAA. NHRA also offers NHRA Jr. Street program for teens and the Summit Racing Jr. Drag Racing League for youth ages 5 to 17. In addition, NHRA owns and operates five racing facilities: Atlanta Dragway in Georgia; Gainesville Raceway in Florida; National Trail Raceway in Ohio; Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis; and Auto Club Raceway at Pomona in Southern California. Alfa Romeo returns to Formula 1™

Alfa Romeo returns to Formula 1™

Alfa Romeo returns to Formula 1 after more than 30 years away from the sport
Alfa Romeo and Sauber F1 Team have entered into a multi-year partnership agreement covering strategic, commercial and technological cooperation
The official name will be Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team

November 29, 2017 , Auburn Hills, Mich. -

The prestigious Italian brand owned by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) today signed a multi-year technical and commercial partnership agreement with Swiss Sauber F1 Team for participation in the Formula 1 world championship beginning with the 2018 season.

The single-seaters will sport the distinctive colors and logo of Alfa Romeo, the team’s Title Sponsor, and will be equipped with 2018 Ferrari power units.

The scope of the agreement includes strategic, commercial and technological cooperation in all applicable areas of development, including access to engineering know-how and the expertise of Alfa Romeo technical staff. This partnership will provide additional opportunities for the two organizations in both Formula 1 and the automotive sector in general.

The official name will be Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team.

Sergio Marchionne, CEO of FCA, said: “This agreement with the Sauber F1 Team is a significant step in the reshaping of the Alfa Romeo brand, which will return to Formula 1 after an absence of more than 30 years. A storied marque that has helped make the history of this sport, Alfa Romeo will join other major automakers that participate in Formula 1. The brand itself will also benefit from the sharing of technology and strategic know-how with a partner of the Sauber F1 Team’s undisputed experience. The Alfa Romeo engineers and technicians, who have already demonstrated their capabilities with the newly-launched models, Giulia and Stelvio, will have the opportunity to make that experience available to the Sauber F1 Team. At the same time, Alfa Romeo fans will once again have the opportunity to support an automaker that is determined to begin writing an exciting new chapter in its unique, legendary sporting history.”

Pascal Picci, Chairman of Sauber Holding AG, commented: “We are very pleased to welcome Alfa Romeo to the Sauber F1 Team. Alfa Romeo has a long history of success in Grand Prix racing, and we are very proud that this internationally renowned company has chosen to work with us for its return to the pinnacle of motorsport. Working closely with a car manufacturer is a great opportunity for the Sauber Group to further develop its technology and engineering projects. We are confident that together we can bring the Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team great success, and look forward to a long and successful partnership.”

The return of Alfa Romeo, one of the major protagonists in Formula 1 history, is expected to contribute significantly to the appeal and future development of the sport. Alfa Romeo brings with it technological know-how and a large and passionate fan base, while participation in the championship also offers benefits for the brand in areas such as technology transfer and road safety.

Alfa Romeo is known around the world for its racing heritage and technological excellence. The undisputed champion of the pre-war Grand Prix (in 1925, the GP Tipo 2 dominated the first World Championship), Alfa Romeo participated in Formula 1 from 1950 to 1988, both as a constructor and engine supplier. Immediately upon its debut, Alfa Romeo won the first two drivers’ world championships, in 1950 and 1951, with drivers Nino Farina and Juan Manuel Fangio. From 1961 to 1979, Alfa Romeo participated as engine supplier to several F1 teams. Following its return as a constructor in 1979, Alfa Romeo achieved its best result in 1983, taking sixth place in the constructors’ championship. More than 30 years after withdrawing as a competitor from Formula 1 (1985), the brand is returning with the clear intention to make its mark.

About Alfa Romeo and FCA

About Sauber Motorsport
In 1970 Peter Sauber founded his company and designed his first racing car in the cellar of his parents’ house. The race team grew steadily and enjoyed its first major international successes in the late 1980s. As the Mercedes works team, Sauber celebrated a one-two victory in the Le Mans 24-hour race in 1989 and back-to-back Drivers’ and Manufacturers’ titles in the World Sports Car Championship in 1989 and 1990. In 1993 Sauber entered Formula One. Among the team’s F1 highlights have been a fourth-place finish in the Constructors’ World Championship in 2001 as an independent team and – in partnership with BMW – a one-two finish in the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix on the way to third place in the constructors’ standings that year. In 2010 Sauber became an independent outfit once again. 2012 was a very good year of the Sauber F1 Team, headlined by four podium finishes, 126 World Championship points and sixth place in the constructors’ standings. The 11th October 2012 marked a milestone in the history of the team – the day when Sauber stepped down as Team Principal and passed on the baton to Monisha Kaltenborn. Between 1993 and the end of 2016 the team contested 424 grand prix in Formula One. In 2017 the Sauber F1 Team celebrates another milestone: it is the 25th Formula One season in the teams’ history. The fourth oldest Formula 1 team starts together with its new owner, Longbow Finance S. A., into a new era. In 2017, Frédéric Vasseur was named as the new Managing Director and CEO of Sauber Motorsport AG, and Team Principal of the Sauber F1 Team. Sauber has its headquarters in Hinwil, in the Swiss canton of Zurich. The team’s state of the art factory houses manufacturing facilities and offices spanning an area of 15,600 square meters and boasts one of the most advanced wind tunnels in F1.

F1 Cars to Take to the Streets of Miami

F1 Cars to Take to the Streets of Miami in 2018 for Live Demonstration

Jan 24, 2018

Liberty Media Group, which owns the rights to the Formula 1 racing series, is considering hosting an F1 Live event in Miami in 2018.

The inaugural F1 Live event was held in London last year and saw teams and drivers perform demonstration runs in F1 cars in front of over 100,000 fans. All of the drivers except for world champion Lewis Hamilton were in attendance for the event, demonstrating both current day and vintage Grand Prix cars. The event in Miami would be very similar to the London event, it’s understood, and would be joined by similar F1 Live stops around Europe and in Asia.

“We plan something similar in Marseille, Berlin, Milan, Shanghai and Miami, but not with so many cars,” F1 managing director for commercial operations, Sean Bratches, told Auto Motor und Sport. “We believe that this contact of Formula 1 with the audience outside the racetrack is important. It also carries our message to people we would not otherwise reach.”

F1 Live was held during the build-up to the 2017 British Grand Prix at Silverstone. All F1 Live events to be held in 2018 will serve as build-up events to country’s race it’s hosted in. The Berlin stop will preview the German Grand Prix a Hockenheim, for example, while the event in Marseilles will be held ahead of the reborn French Grand Prix. With the US GP scheduled for late October, it’s likely F1 Live in Miami will be held in the fall.

As discovered by AutoGuide, Liberty filed a trademark application for the ‘Grand Prix of Miami’ and the ‘Miami Grand Prix’ last year. The company is also believed to have visited the Miami region in order to evaluate the possibility of hosting a street race there. Liberty has trademarked the Grand Prix of New York, the New York Grand Prix, the Grand Prix of Las Vegas and the Las Vegas Grand Prix as well, a sign that it would like to add a second US GP to the F1 calendar.

The Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team Reveals the C37

The Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team Reveals the C37

February 20, 2018 , HINWIL, Switzerland -

The Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team has launched its new challenger, the C37, ahead of the 2018 Formula 1 championship.

The C37 looks different to last year’s C36 – on one hand, this is due to the new technical regulations and, on the other hand, because of the team’s new technical approach.

As the 2018 season is about to kick off, Frédéric Vasseur, Team Prinicpal, says: “I am very much looking forward to the 2018 season, and to seeing Marcus (Ericsson) and Charles (Leclerc) on track. We have put lots of effort and hard work into the C37 over the last few months, and it is fantastic to be launching the new car today. I am convinced that Marcus and Charles form the perfect driver line-up, with one being an experienced driver and one a promising rookie. Marcus is going into his fourth season with us. He is a valuable part of the team, and we benefit from his experience and precise technical feedback. As for Charles, he has proven his talent in prior categories and deserves to be on the Formula 1 grid this season.

“Our target ahead of 2018 is clear: We have to catch up with the field and to continue improving our performance during the course of the season. We have put lots of energy and commitment into the development of the C37. I want to thank our partners and fans for their continuous support. The return of Alfa Romeo to Formula 1 sets another milestone in the team’s history, and I am proud that such a historical brand has chosen us for their return to the sport. We are eager to start the 2018 season as the Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team,” Vasseur continues.

Alfa Romeo's comeback restores to F1 one of the names that has gone down in the history of motorsport's premium championship and marks the return to the circuits of the “Quadrifoglio,” the legendary badge that has appeared on Alfa Romeo's top performance cars since 1923. Featured on the engine cover of the new F1 car, the famous good-luck charm has a fascinating history, deeply rooted in the racing world. The first Alfa Romeo car to carry the Quadrifoglio was the “RL” driven by Ugo Sivocci, which won the 15th edition of the Targa Florio in 1923. The same good-luck emblem also appeared on Brilli Peri's “P2” when he triumphed in the first "Motor Racing World Championship" in Monza in 1925, gaining the first of Alfa Rome's five World Titles, and it was present again in 1950 and 1951 when Giuseppe “Nino” Farina and Juan Manuel Fangio drove the Alfa Romeo 158 and 159 cars, the famous “Alfettas,” to success in the first two Formula 1 World Championships. And today the legendary symbol returns to the highest level of motor racing to show the whole world the continuing strength and success of the Alfa Romeo philosophy, a constant search for excellence applied to racing, then transferred in its entirety to the brand's production cars. The legend continues.

Jörg Zander, Technical Director, explains: “It is great to finally reveal the C37 today. The 2018 challenger is the result of the hard work that everyone in the factory has put in over the last few months. Speaking about the C37, the car philosophy is much different to that of the C36. The aerodynamic concept has changed significantly, and the C37 has several new features in comparison to its predecessor. We are positive that the new concept offers us more opportunities and will help us to make improvements during the course of the season. The 2018 Ferrari engine will also give us a boost in terms of our performance. We hope that we will make progress with the C37 and that we are more competitive compared to 2017.”

The official rollout of the C37 will take place on the occasion of the first winter tests at the Circuit de Catalunya near Barcelona from February 26 to March 1.

Leah Pritchett and Don Schumacher Racing Competing With Different Kind of HEMI at NMCA | Presented by Nitto Tire

March 7, 2018

NHRA Top Fuel pilot Leah Pritchett is preparing for her NMCA competition debut this weekend at Bradenton Motorsports Park. She will be piloting a Mopar Drag Pak factory-backed racecar. The program is designed to showoff Don Schumacher Racing and their new deal as Dodge’s preferred trackside supplier/vendor of Drag Pak parts. Pritchett will also be competing with her Drag Pak in the NHRA Factory Showdown eliminator, which begins next weekend during the NHRA Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway.

Managing the DSR program is 4-time NHRA Stock Eliminator champion Kevin Helms, and he will also serve as crew chief for Pritchett. The car is at Bradenton Motorsports Park testing for the 16th annual NMCA Muscle Car Mayhem this weekend. On track, Pritchett has already run 8.08 at 167 mph off-the-trailer in what is sure to be a competitive chase for the first 7-second run in NMCA Holley EFI Factory Super Cars. In fact, Holley EFI has put up a $5,000 bounty for the first racer to achieve the historic mark and will double that prize if the car is equipped with a Holley EFI engine management system.

The car is equipped with a 354ci Gen III HEMI engine, which is pumped up by a Whipple 2.9L supercharger system. Pritchett shared, “It’s an incredible opportunity to race the Mopar Drag Pak with the full support of DSR and we are excited to promote Sportsman drag racing.”

Dodge Challenger WINS in Trans Am Season Opener!

Sebring International Raceway is a tough track. It started life as a WWII airstrip and has a reputation for shaking the fillings out of your teeth like a Detroit pothole. Yet, since 1950, it has been home to epic battles among the world’s greatest brands. This past weekend was the first race of the year for the Trans Am TA2 Muscle Car Challenge, where Marc Miller and his #12 Speedlogix/Prefix Challenger raced back to Sebring’s historic Victory Lane.

Marc’s is a name you may likely recognize; his history racing Dodge products goes back to when he was part of the driving team that took Viper to LeMans. He’s also turned quite a few heads in the Continental Tire Series racing for former major league pitcher CJ Wilson the last handful of years. Interestingly, just a few weeks ago, I got to ask Marc what he was most excited about with this new partnership and he said, “Being able to contend for the championship.” There’s no better way to do that than to leave the first weekend in the points lead!

Considering the deal for the season was just made a couple weeks ago, Miller says he and the Stevens Miller Racing team have really bonded. “They are all great guys and stayed late to work on the cars every night so I stayed late too. I could tell they liked to win and they deserved a win from how much work they put in prepping five cars over the past couple weeks to be ready for this race.”

Then it was time to zip up the fire suit. Miller qualified on the front row, starting second. When the green flag dropped, there was some contact with another car that cost him time. “I fell back to sixth on the first lap, and I continued to make passes to make my way up to second. We had a couple of cautions late in the race and one got me back in the fighting spot of the leader.” Rafa Matos started on the pole and was fast in his Camaro, but Miller kept pressuring the Brazilian. With just a handful of laps left, the leaders caught traffic, giving Miller the shot he was looking for. Matos made a small mistake that allowed Miller to stick the Challenger’s nose inside, get back to the gas and accelerate away with the lead! A lap later, the caution flag waved and the race was done: Marc Miller brought the Dodge Challenger home in first place in the 2018 season opener!

You may recall that back in 2014 Miller was injured at Sebring in what he calls “the worst crash of my career,” breaking bones and spending months in rehab. So, was this a bit of payback for him? “My 2014 accident has long been forgotten,” said Miller. “In fact, the only time I even thought of it was when we walked into Don Jose (a local taqueria) and I mentioned this is where I came to eat after I was released from the hospital… I go there every year now.”

In a way, it’s fitting that the win was with a Dodge Challenger. We have a history in the series dating back to 1970 when famous racers like Sam Posey drove the Challenger. No doubt, it’s exciting to be back and Miller tells Dodge Garage, “It meant a lot to get a win in a Dodge. I got my first real opportunity in GT racing driving a Viper. My first laps led in a Weathertech Series race was in a Viper, the first laps at Le Mans and my first GT win at Petit Le Mans also came in the Viper. In 2016, I raced a Dodge Challenger at the Detroit GP in my first Trans Am event and it seems perfectly fitting to get my first TA win with the same team in a Challenger. It all felt right and I couldn’t have asked for it to go any better.”

Then Marc pointed out something VERY important: “HEMI®s can make great donuts!”

The next round of the Trans Am series races again March 29-31 at Road Atlanta.

F1 Car of the Future

This is What an F1 Car of the Future Might Look Like

Sep 13, 2018

Formula 1 is currently trying to figure out what its new rule package from 2021 onward will consist of.

The admittedly confusing sport had its last major regulation change in 2017, when the series moved from narrow cars with tall, upright rear wings to wider machines with fatter tires and broader, lower rear wings. The series is going to change the rules once again for 2021 as it looks to make the racing better, with the turbulent air thrown up by the complicated wings of today’s cars making it difficult for cars to follow each other on track or make passes. It also wants to better integrate its halo head protection device into the car’s design.

An image from a secret meeting held with F1’s head honchos and team bosses recently leaked through social media, showing what a Formula 1 car might look like if developed under the 2021 rules package. The futuristic-looking machine features a simplified front wing and side pods, a neatly integrated halo, bodywork covering the upper part of the rear wheels and a small rear ‘fin’ joining the rear of the car to the rear wing. It also features the larger 18-inch wheels that will arrive in F1 from 2021 onward at the request of tire supplier Pirelli.

The slide showing the early draft 2021 F1 car, which has a Scuderia Ferrari livery, features a tab in the upper right corner that reads ‘Concept 2’. That likely means that Formula One Management (FOM) is considering a few different rule package proposals and has yet to decide which will make the cut. It does seem as though Formula 1 is chasing a futuristic look with the rule package, however, much like the fully-electric Formula E series did for its second-generation race car.

F1 owners Liberty Media are currently working with teams to develop the rules package, so the concept study pictured here is subject to change, but we’re loving the way it looks even as an early draft.
