The all-new 2017 Jeep® Compass expands the brand’s global reach with an unmatched combination of attributes that includes legendary and best-in-class 4x4 off-road capability, advanced fuel-efficient powertrains, premium and authentic Jeep design, superior on-road driving dynamics, open-air freedom, and a host of innovative safety and advanced technology offerings.

A truly global all-new compact SUV, the 2017 Jeep Compass will be manufactured in Brazil, China, Mexico and India, for consumers in more than 100 countries around the world.

“Our all-new 2017 Jeep Compass enters an extremely important and growing segment worldwide, and does so with an unmatched list of attributes that includes benchmark 4x4 off-road capability, exceptional on-road driving dynamics, fuel-efficient powertrains, countless advanced technology and safety features, all wrapped in a premium, authentic Jeep design,” said Mike Manley, Head of Jeep Brand – FCA Global. “Built around the world for customers everywhere, Jeep Compass raises the bar in the compact-SUV segment.”

The 2017 Jeep Compass is available in four different trim configurations: Sport, Latitude, Limited and Trailhawk.

Best-in-class off-road capability with two leading 4x4 systems
The all-new 2017 Jeep Compass delivers best-in-class off-road capability, courtesy of two advanced, intelligent 4x4 systems, each of which can send 100 percent of available torque to any one wheel:

Jeep Active Drive – full-time 4x4 system
Jeep Active Drive Low – class-exclusive full-time 4x4 system with 20:1 crawl ratio

Both Jeep Active Drive and Active Drive Low 4x4 systems include the Jeep Selec-Terrain system, providing up to five modes (Auto, Snow, Sand and Mud modes, plus exclusive Rock mode on the Trailhawk model) for the best four-wheel-drive performance on- or off-road and in any weather condition. For even greater Trail Rated off-road capability, Selec-Terrain includes Selec-Speed Control with Hill-descent Control on Trailhawk models.

Compass features a disconnecting rear axle and power take-off unit (PTU), in order to provide 4x4 models with enhanced fuel economy. Jeep Active Drive and Active Drive Low 4x4 systems instantly engage when 4x4 traction is needed.

Trail Rated Jeep Compass Trailhawk
For those who seek adventure off the beaten path, the Compass Trailhawk model delivers best-in-class Trail Rated 4x4 capability with:

Standard Jeep Active Drive Low 4x4 20:1 crawl ratio
Selec-Terrain with exclusive Rock mode
Increased ride height of almost one inch, skid plates and Jeep signature red front and rear tow hooks
Unique fascias with 30-degree approach angle, 24-degree breakover angle and a 34-degree departure angle
Hill-descent Control
Aggressive 17-inch off-road tires
Up to 19 inches of water fording
Up to 2,000-lbs. towing capability

Superior on-road driving dynamics
FCA’s “small wide architecture,” a fully independent suspension, segment-exclusive Koni frequency damping front-and-rear-strut system, and precise electric power steering combine to deliver superior on-road driving dynamics in the all-new 2017 Jeep Compass.

Compass boasts a rigid foundation. The upper body structure and frame are engineered as a single unit for a stiff and more mass-efficient structure, and it is designed and built with an extensive use of high-strength steel and liberal use of structural adhesives. More than 65 percent high-strength steel is used for maximizing vehicle dynamics and crash performance while optimizing weight efficiency.

Advanced fuel-efficient powertrains
A total of five engines – three gasoline and two diesel – will be offered, depending on the market worldwide. In North America, the proven, fuel-efficient 2.4-liter Tigershark four-cylinder engine will power the Compass, delivering up to 30 miles per gallon (mpg).

2.4-liter Tigershark engine with MultiAir2
Efficiency and refinement also are hallmarks of FCA‘s 16-valve, 2.4-liter Tigershark I-4 engine with the MultiAir2 electro-hydraulic, fully variable valve-actuation system. The advanced technology engine produces 180 horsepower, 175 lb.-ft. of torque and is mated to the choice of three transmissions in North America:

Class-exclusive nine-speed automatic transmission for 4x4 models
Six-speed manual transmission (4x2 and 4x4 models)
Aisin six-speed automatic transmission for 4x2 Compass models

Class-exclusive nine-speed transmission
The all-new 2017 Jeep Compass is the only compact SUV to offer a nine-speed automatic transmission, enabling the vehicle to optimize engine output and for aggressive launches and smooth, efficient power delivery at highway speeds. The nine-speed transmission is standard on all Jeep Compass 4x4 models.

Six-speed manual transmission
All-new 2017 Jeep Compass 4x2 and 4x4 models are equipped with the standard six-speed manual transmission. This proven transmission features a 6.68 ratio spread and a 4.438 final-drive ratio for fuel efficiency at faster speeds. Thanks to its first-gear launch ratio of 18.4:1, the gearbox delivers quick acceleration with smooth, precise shift quality.

Six-speed automatic transmission
Available on Jeep Compass 4x2 models, the Gen III six-speed automatic transmission features a 6.635 ratio spread and a 3.502 final-drive ratio for a responsive, enjoyable drive.

Authentic Jeep design with premium features and open-air freedom
The all-new 2017 Jeep Compass features a premium, sculptural design aesthetic. The exterior design is expressive and emotional with a wide stance and exceptional glass-to-wheel proportions. The all-new compact SUV is immediately recognizable as a Jeep with its distinctive traditional Jeep design cues. Jeep designers gave the legendary seven-slot grille a fresh look by setting each of the individual chrome slots in a Gloss Black field. Headlamp bezels featuring a black outline add personality and attitude to the front of the all-new Jeep Compass.

The exterior of the 2017 Jeep Compass features a traditional clamshell hood with a double break line and center bulge.

A fast, dramatic roofline and muscular fenders and shoulders create a stunning profile. The available Gloss Black painted roof adds a unique, premium appearance in the compact SUV segment. An available dual-pane sunroof provides the largest opening possible, connecting Jeep drivers and passengers to the outdoors and open-air freedom.

A standout feature of the rear of the Compass is its unique LED tail lamps. Slim and rectangular in shape, the tail lamps flow into the liftgate for a commanding yet premium appearance instantly recognizable as a Jeep Compass on the road or trail.

For added consumer convenience, the 2017 Jeep Compass features a power liftgate helping ease cargo storage.

Upscale interior design boasts premium features and technology
The all-new 2017 Jeep Compass interior design showcases a premium interior highlighted by sculptural surface elements and precise technical detail.

The trapezoidal center stack bezel is a characteristic Jeep design cue and sports a color and finish that complements the interior choice. The center stack houses the 5.0-, 7.0- or 8.4-inch touchscreen displays. The center console neatly integrates the functional features of the Jeep Compass, including gear-shift selection, Selec-Terrain controls, electronic parking break, engine stop-start (ESS) controls, climate and volume control knobs, and easily accessible media charging and connectivity ports within the cubby bin.

The driver’s cockpit is thoughtfully designed and features a 3.5- or 7-inch LED driver information display (DID) instrument cluster. The available full-color 7-inch DID – the largest in the segment – displays information that the driver may configure for easier access while driving. The Jeep steering wheel with integrated audio, voice and speed controls enables drivers to keep their hands on the wheel and attention focused on the road ahead.

Clever and thoughtfully designed storage solutions are abound throughout the cabin, including a stylish mesh side pocket in the front passenger footwell that can hold a notebook or tablet device, and an inventive multi-level rear cargo floor.

Advanced technology that delivers thorough use of all-new infotainment systems
The all-new 2017 Jeep Compass offers four new Uconnect systems for North America (Uconnect 5.0, 7.0, 8.4 and 8.4NAV), delivering communication, entertainment and navigation features that drivers and passengers desire, including the segment’s largest full-color LED instrument cluster.

The new lineup includes easy-to-use features, enhanced processing power, faster startup times and touchscreens that display high-resolution graphics.

New Apple CarPlay and Android Auto features
The all-new 2017 Jeep Compass is equipped with the Uconnect 7.0, 8.4 or 8.4NAV systems and includes the new Apple CarPlay and Android Auto features.

Apple CarPlay
Seamlessly integrates an iPhone with the vehicle’s built-in display and controls in addition to featuring Siri Voice control. iPhone-equipped drivers can make phone calls, access music, send and receive messages, and receive voice-guided navigation optimized for traffic conditions and more, while staying focused on the road.

Android Auto
System shares useful information when driving and makes it easy to access the best of Google technology. Featuring Google Maps with free voice-guided navigation, live traffic information, lane guidance; on-demand access to 30 million songs with Google Play Music; plus the ability to place phone calls or send and receive messages while keeping hands on the wheel; and ask Google search any question. Drivers and passengers also have an abundance of infotainment features at their fingertips with SiriusXM Radio, Travel Link, Traffic and Guardian Connected Services that provide real-time information.

More than 70 available advanced safety and security features

The 2017 Jeep Compass’ Active Drive 4×4 System

Feature Spotlight: The 2017 Jeep Compass’ Active Drive 4×4 System

Nov 18, 2016

When developing the Jeep Compass, Fiat Chrysler looked to capture the essence of the quiet and comfortable Jeep Grand Cherokee and work it into a smaller package. It’s for that reason that it will mostly appeal to more traditional car buyers rather than the hardcore Jeep enthusiasts that typically buy the Jeep Wrangler.

Despite its status as a ‘soft roader’, if you will, the 2017 Compass’ ’Jeep Active Drive’ and Jeep Active Drive Low 4×4 systems will prove more than capable for most consumers’ needs. The two systems, offered with a nine-speed automatic transmission, ensure the Compass delivers best-in-class off-road capability, Jeep says.

The 4×4 systems work in tandem with Jeep’s electronic Selec-Terrain traction control system, which comes with four drive modes: Auto, Snow, Sand and Mud. On ‘Trail Rated ‘Trailhawk models, the Selec Terrain system includes a ‘Rock’ mode for dealing with loose gravel and stones. Further off-road capability for Trailhawk models is provided through a Selec-Speed Control system with Hill-descent Control.

The 4×4 system is capable of sending all of the Compass’ 175 lb-ft of torque to any one wheel at a time. Additionally, the rear axle can also disconnect when the 4×4 system is not needed for improved fuel economy. Trailhawk models, which feature a 20:1 crawl ratio, also benefit from a 1-inch suspension lift – allowing for a 30-degree approach angle, 24-degree breakover angle and a 34-degree departure angle.

So don’t be fooled by the 2017 Compass’ upscale, mature looks. If you equip the crossover with one of the two available full-time 4×4 systems, you’d be hard pressed to find a trail too tough for it to tackle.

New Jeep Compass goes for the globe

New Jeep Compass goes for the globe

Feb. 24, 2017

That’s the word Fiat Chrysler Automobiles executives use perhaps most often when discussing the 2017 Jeep Compass, a new and updated version of a model dating to 2006.

The new Compass is the Auburn Hills automaker's ambitious effort to claim a larger piece of the growing and crowded compact SUV market.

Mike Manley, who heads the RAM and Jeep brands, pointed to global ambitions for the vehicle during its unveiling for the media this week in San Antonio, Texas. The new Compass, which is being built for the North American market from a plant in Toluca, Mexico, is expected to be shipped to dealers within days.

“We’re going to build Compass in four different plants around the world, which is very important, because without doing that, some of those markets are effectively closed to us, so global segment, global vehicle, global manufacturing footprint and the fulfillment of some of the promises we made in 2009,” Manley said, referencing the plans laid out during the beginnings of the Fiat Chrysler merger.

“To a large extent,” Manley said, “Compass was the last piece of that original promise that we made to our stakeholders and our customers because it’s the last vehicle that we’re changing that was still there in 2009.”

The Compass, which boasts “best-in-class fuel economy” and Jeep’s trademark off-road capabilities, will be built at plants in China, Brazil and India as well as Mexico. The new Compass replaces two current models, the old Compass and the Patriot, which were made in Belvidere, Ill. FCA is retooling its facilities in Belvidere for Cherokee production, which is being shifted from Toledo.

In 2016, Fiat Chrysler's Compass sales increased 31% to 94,061 and Patriot sales increased 0.5% to 121,926 for a total of 215,987. Now, the automaker will rely on one vehicle to replace the sales from both of those former vehicles.

Rebecca Lindland, senior director and executive analyst for Kelley Blue Book, said the Compass displays a stronger connection to Jeep’s roots than either of the vehicles it replaces.

“I think it’s authentic to the brand, more so than the previous Compass or Patriot,” Lindland said.

But she also noted the “huge challenge” FCA is up against in the Compass’ competition, which she said include the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V and Tallon listed as the Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson.

Sales of the RAV4, Escape, and CR-V all exceeded 300,000 in 2016, easily eclipsing sales of both the Compass and Patriot.

With production changes and a decision to reduce its fleet business, the Jeep could see some “tough comparisons” in terms of its monthly sales for much of the year in the U.S., but Manley said he expects Jeep sales will be up slightly by the end of 2017.

But again, Manley emphasized that the value of the all-new Compass goes beyond its role in the U.S.

Manley said the new Compass will help the company access a hot global vehicle segment, which he said is expected to grow from about 6.3 million in 2016 to 7.5 million in 2020.

In Europe, Manley expects the Compass will build on the success of the Jeep Renegade, which was embraced in Italy and other countries after its introduction in 2015.

"I would say that Compass is going to be over the next two years one of the most important vehicles in Europe for us," Manley said.

Jeep has been Fiat Chrysler's fastest-growing brand globally. Its sales have climbed from just under 500,000 vehicles worldwide in 2008 to more than 1.4 million in 2016 and could top 2 million by 2018.

Scott Tallon, director of the Jeep brand in North America, said the Compass should be a big contributor to the company’s sales success in North America this year and noted it will be followed by production of an all-new Wrangler later this year.

The Compass also is going on sale at a time when consumers are increasingly abandoning small cars and sedans in favor of SUVs.

“I believe that this really (is the) absolute right Jeep at the right time. If we had to draw this up three weeks ago, this is what we’d be bringing to market in 2017,” Tallon said.

Compass, with its “premium, sculptural design aesthetic,” is reflective of the Grand Cherokee, rather than the brand’s smaller Renegade, although both vehicles are underpinned by FCA’s “small-wide 4x4 architecture.”

The Compass is, however, coming to market while the automaker continues to deal with quality problems.

On Wednesday, the Jeep brand finished second to last in the J.D. Power 2017 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study.

The Compass, however, made an impression on Lindland during her trip to Texas. She said noise, vibration and harshness, a key vehicle measurement, appeared to be “vastly improved,” not just from the earlier Compass but also among competitors. She also noted the starting price point as positive, from a $20,995 Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price for the Sport 4x2 to $28,995 for the Limited 4x4, not counting a $1,095 destination charge.

Lindland said the Compass’ biggest asset is that it is “far more capable off-road, which can translate into competency in snow and rain and other driving conditions.”

The company’s decision to build the Compass at four plants around the world will help the company avoid issues with currency fluctuations, save on logistics and allow for some customization based on regional preferences, she said.

The media drive from San Antonio’s urban streetscape into the more rugged terrain of the Texas Hill Country showed off a range of Compass capabilities, including narrow country roads, water crossings and navigating around free-roaming livestock. At a ranch near Comfort, Texas, journalists drove through an off-road course that featured muddy craters and a nearly vertical plunge down a hill and over boulders that might have meant a trip to the repair shop for many other SUVs.

From the backseat, Tallon, the Jeep brand director, offered a memorable assessment of the Compass as a reporter navigated the rather intimidating course ahead:

“It’s not a Fabergé egg.”
A closer look: The 2017 Jeep Compass

North American models are powered by a 2.4-liter Tigershark MultiAir Engine.
Fourth-generation Uconnect system, including Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and choice of 5.0-, 7.0- or 8.4 inch touchscreen.
Fuel economy ranges of 23 m.p.g. in the city and 32 m.p.g. highway with a 6-speed manual transmission and front-wheel drive to 22 m.p.g. city and 30 m.p.g. highway for the 9-speed automatic 4x4.
Pricing starts at $20,995 for the Sport 4x2 to $28,995 for the Limited 4x4, not counting a $1,095 destination charge.

Jeep and the Yokohama

Jeep and the Yokohama Geolandar G055 Pair Up

March 8, 2017

The Jeep Division of FCA US LLC is partnering with Yokohama Tire Corp. to bring the new Jeep Compass into the market on Yokohama tires.

The Yokohama Geolandar G055 was selected as a tire supplier for the 2017 Jeep Compass. The fitment will cover the North American market, including Canada, in size 225/55R18 98H.

“This selection was made after many years of testing and validation to provide a tire that meets the exacting specifications for FCA US,” says Andrew Zeisser, Yokohama's director of OE sales.

“The Geolandar G055 will provide more performance and comfort for Jeep Compass customers. “It features all-season performance and extended tread life, thanks to Yokohama’s advanced orange oil technology.”

Benefits of the Geolandar G055, which was rolled out two years ago, include:

* Transition grooves with notch sipes that work together to create biting edges while maintaining tread block rigidity for improved mileage and handling in wet and wintry conditions.

* Circumferential zigzag grooves designed to resist hydroplaning and provide aggressive edges even as the tread wears.

* An integrated shoulder and full nylon cover that improves stability while resisting irregular wear.

Following the debut of the 60-second spot “Recalculating,” four 30-second product spots will launch mid-May.

In addition to national broadcast (including primetime programming such as “Saturday Night Live,” “Modern Family,” “Law & Order,” “Super Store,” “The Bachelorette,” “Once Upon a Time” and “Dancing with the Stars”), the campaign also leverages print (GQ, Men’s Fitness, People, Shape and Wired), in-cinema 3D, digital advertising, CRM and experiential activations.

The global campaign will feature customized creative for each region, which will launch over the summer.

The “Recalculating” campaign was created by the Jeep brand in partnership with DDB Chicago.
