New Base Model, $2,800 Price Cut

Chrysler Pacifica Gets New Base Model, $2,800 Price Cut

Sep 07, 2017

The posh minivan is already outselling the Honda Odyssey, and could best Toyota by the end of the year.

According to a report from Cars Direct, Chrysler is looking to one-up competition from Toyota and Honda in the minivan segment. The report says the automaker will offer a new base model Pacifica in 2018, slotted below the LX called the Pacifica L. It will sell for a base price of $28,090, which is a full $2,800 under the LX once destination charges are figured in. It also considerably undercuts the Toyota Sienna and its $31,045 base price, not to mention the Honda Odyssey at $30,930.

How the Chrysler Pacifica Gets Made

How the Chrysler Pacifica Gets Made

Sep 20, 2017

The year was 1984.

Apple’s first Macintosh computer went on sale in January and Marvin Gaye was shot by his dad in the spring. By the time summer came, the Soviets had decided to boycott the Olympics, and by December, Footloose was still a thing. Meanwhile, in Windsor, the Chrysler Corporation had learned how to legitimately manufacture money.

Introduced in late 1983 before going on sale early in ’84, Chrysler’s ascendant minivan would ultimately assassinate the station wagon in North America, supplanting it as the family hauler of choice and ultimately saving the Corporation from certain financial doom.

Initially developed as a derivative of the K-Car, the minivan permanently altered the North American passenger car game, offering suburban families the choice of five or seven seats, removable seating, cargo capacity, fuel efficiency and car-like behavior. Dodge, Plymouth, and Chrysler-branded versions of would rule supreme in suburbia for almost three decades, selling because it was such a symbol of banal conformity and just so totally practical.

More than 14 million vans would find new homes across five generations of product, but growing stigma and something called the Crossover Utility Vehicle had started threatening the cash cow. If FCA wanted to rekindle the fire it started, both the product and the production process would need a revamp.

Rumors started bubbling in 2013 that Chrysler was planning to introduce a replacement for the Town & Country in three or four years time, but it was believed the new evolution could morph into something like the old Chrysler Pacifica, an SUV based on minivan bones.

Whatever it would be, the company was serious about making it successful, with Sergio Marchionne promising more than $2-billion in investments dedicated to the development and production of a new vehicle in Windsor.

Enter the Chrysler Pacifica. Again.

The reimagined Pacifica does its best to meld both concepts, its “all-new” platform is once again a warmed-over derivative of one of the company’s bread and butter platforms— in this case, the Compact US Wide (CUSW) platform — to once again offer comfort and efficiency, but now with a new touch of refinement.

The new Pacifica brings a further 37 innovations to a segment Chrysler has long owned. Engineering firsts aimed at not just improving the consumer experience, but winning back the suburban schlepp from the invasive crossover that is quickly cannibalizing the industry.

Of the $2.6-billion allocated to the Pacifica program, nearly $1-billion was used to upgrade and retool Windsor Assembly. KUKA Assembly’s PULSE line system was chosen for its flexibility and durability, it uses electric friction motors which are more reliable and require less maintenance than a conventional line system. The new line also fits within a smaller footprint and offers more flexibility, which is the key to producing distinct vehicles on the same line.

In order to up production quality and eliminate waste, a new Metrology Center was added, allowing for Complete Technical Vehicle Validation (CTVV) using 3D scanning and laser imaging technology. The gleaming white department could build itself a Pacifica if necessary, but more importantly, it finds problems. Allegedly, it was the metrology team that briefly halted production of the Pacifica Hybrid earlier this summer after discovering a problem with the battery’s inverter diodes.

Combining Windsor’s new magic weapon with upgraded line equipment and streamlined processes allow the Pacifica and Grand Caravan to coexist on the same line with little commonality. The Pacifica pair shares the exact same space and station times with the Grand Caravan, each taking 26.1 hours to go from a pile of bare metal stampings into a fully functional product on its way to the dealership.

Involved in the hustle and bustle are some 6,000 employees spread out over 4 million square feet between three buildings, and linked by 40 km of conveyor chain that drags the vans through the complex from start to finish.

Everything starts in the body shop building, where a synchronized team of 1,274 robots use a sophisticated array of cameras and lasers to measure and position the panels within 0.5 mm tolerances before welding them in place. Body-in-white production takes a little over eight hours from start to finish before the vans sit for an hour as the rest of the factory gears up for their arrival.

For the next seven hours, the vans are worked over by 453 people and 150 dancing robots, but FCA wouldn’t let us watch. Each van gets primed and painted with its doors in place before they’re removed and sent on their way around the plant separately, being reunited with the body they belong with later on during assembly. FCA says the process is a bit of a pain but makes for a much better paint job.

Trim and Chassis are where the van spends the next six hours of its nascent life. After crossing into the assembly building from the overhead conveyor, 2,500 employees are aided by more than 50 robots, 63 skillets, and 65 chassis palettes to fit the meaty bits and optional sweets each van will roll out the door with. Wiring looms, windows, seats, hoses, wheels, and headliners all find their places in 42-second station intervals.

The most mesmerizing of all is when the entire driveline and suspension subframes are married to the body in one fluid motion as the van is lowered and the assembly raises into its new home. The only real difference in production between the Pacifica and Pacifica Hybrid happens at a sub-assembly station that assembles the hybrid’s Atkinson cycle Pentastar V6, electric motors, eFlite transmission, 16-kWh battery pack and suspension into one unit. The entire assembly is then shuffled over to the robots that raise the hybrid powertrain into the descending body just like its siblings, with the battery simply tucking up under the floor where the Stow n’Go seat cavities used to be.

Once the vans roll off the assembly line, measurements are checked one final time before the vans are wheeled over to a crack team of inspectors which give each van a thorough once over, checking for dents, fit, and finish, before sending them through a high-pressure bath that ensures each one is properly sealed. All that’s left is getting them out the door and loaded onto a truck for shipment to a dealership in Whoknowswhere, America, or Whatsthatplace, Canada.

Windsor Assembly will go quiet in early October as FCA retools for and refreshes the Grand Caravan to meet new side-airbag regulations that came into effect in the U.S. on Sept. 1. The Pacifica already meets them.

Chrysler Brand Launches California-specific Multimedia Marketing Campaign for Chrysler Pacifica Plug-in Hybrid Minivan

Brand makes case for the Chrysler Pacifica Plug-in Hybrid minivan as the “Official Family Vehicle for California,” campaign lobbying efforts are made by the California state animal (the grizzly bear), bird (valley quail), reptile (desert tortoise) and rock (serpentine)
360-degree marketing campaign includes broadcast, print, radio digital, social and out-of-home, including billboards across state of California
The Chrysler Pacifica Plug-in Hybrid minivan is the only electric hybrid minivan and #1 in J.D. Power 2017 U.S. Initial Quality Study
The Chrysler Pacifica Plug-in Hybrid minivan qualifies for the $7,500 federal rebate, in addition to state (and local) and employer rebates

October 10, 2017 , Auburn Hills, Mich. -

The Chrysler brand is launching a multimedia marketing campaign in the state of California for the Chrysler Pacifica Plug-in Hybrid – the only hybrid minivan available on the market. In the campaign, which uniquely speaks to the California market’s lifestyle and culture, the state symbols of the grizzly bear, valley quail, desert tortoise and (serpentine) rock act as lobbyists to recommend the Chrysler Pacifica Plug-in Hybrid minivan as the “Official Family Vehicle for California.” The 360-degree marketing campaign now launching across California includes broadcast, print, radio, digital, social and out-of-home, including billboards (Los Angeles and San Francisco). The broadcast and digital videos can be viewed here.

“Forty percent of all hybrids are sold in the state of California — it’s also the biggest minivan market in the country — so it makes perfect sense that we say the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is the ‘Official Family Vehicle for California,’” said Tim Kuniskis, Head of Passenger Car Brands – Dodge, SRT, Chrysler and FIAT, FCA – North America. “With 84 miles MPGe in electric-only mode, 33 miles of all-electric range and seating for seven, the Chrysler Pacifica Plug-in Hybrid minivan is hands-down the most fuel-efficient family vehicle. Aligning the minivan with other easily identifiable California state symbols in a fun, engaging way is rooted in the vehicle’s fuel efficiency, functionality, technology and its recognition as the most awarded minivan of 2016 and 2017.”

The Chrysler Pacifica Plug-in Hybrid minivan is the only electric hybrid minivan and number one in J.D. Power 2017 U.S. Initial Quality Study. The Chrysler Pacifica Plug-in Hybrid minivan qualifies for the $7,500 federal rebate, in addition to state (and local) and employer rebates.

The Chrysler brand also recently announced a first-of-its-kind family rideshare partnership with California-based Kango. Chrysler Pacifica Plug-in Hybrid minivans will outfit Kango drivers with branded vehicles featuring state-of-the-art plug-in safety and technology features.

The Northwest Automotive Press Association (NWAPA) recently named the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid the Northwest Family Green Vehicle of the Year at its annual Drive Revolution green car competition.

Pacifica Hybrid Named 2018 Green Car

Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Named 2018 Green Car Reports Best Car to Buy

Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid chosen by Green Car Reports editors as the most significant new green car during the 2018 model year
Pacifica Hybrid also named 2018 Best Hybrid Vehicle to Buy by Green Car Reports sister site The Car Connection
Chrysler Pacifica named 2018 Best Minivan to Buy by The Car Connection

November 15, 2017 , Auburn Hills, Mich. -

The Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is the 2018 Best Car to Buy, according to Green Car Reports, a destination for green cars, electric cars, fuel-efficient cars and hybrid cars.

Editors chose the most significant new green car made available to shoppers during the 2018 model year, taking into account new technologies, their practicality and their impact on the environment.

"The Chrysler Pacifica wins because it's a one-of-a-kind vehicle: the sole seven-seat minivan with a plug-in hybrid powertrain sold in the U.S. this year,” said John Voelcker, senior editor at Green Car Reports. “Not only does it offer all the virtues of the well-received Chrysler Pacifica, it offers substantial real-world electric range — 30 miles or more in most cases — and much better fuel economy when operating as a hybrid.”

As the original creator of the minivan 35 years ago, FCA US LLC continues to transform the segment with firsts – notching 78 innovations through the first five minivan generations. With the introduction of the Chrysler Pacifica and Pacifica Hybrid, FCA US adds 37 minivan firsts to its portfolio for an unprecedented total of 115 innovations in the segment, including the industry’s first minivan available as a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle.

“The virtues of the basic Chrysler Pacifica are well-documented: it's stylish, with an interior design far more elegant than you'd expect, plus excellent controls and interactive displays and more family-friendly features than we have space to cover,” Voelcker said. “Adding a plug-in hybrid powertrain to that package, at a price that's essentially offset by the full federal income-tax credit, makes a very good vehicle exceptional.”

The Chrysler Pacifica and Pacifica Hybrid also received category honors from The Car Connection, a sister site of Green Car Reports. The Pacifica was named the 2018 Best Minivan to Buy, while the Pacifica Hybrid is the 2018 Best Hybrid Vehicle to Buy. The Car Connection uses a unique 10-point "TCC Rating" system that rolls up scores given to each vehicle across categories including safety, comfort and utility, fuel economy, performance and styling.

The Chrysler Pacifica – the most awarded minivan of 2016 and 2017 – reinvents the minivan segment with an unprecedented level of functionality, versatility, technology and bold styling. The Pacifica Hybrid takes this revolutionary vehicle a step further with its class-exclusive, innovative plug-in hybrid powertrain. It’s the first electrified vehicle in the minivan segment and achieves 84 miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) in electric-only mode and 33 miles of all-electric range. With more than 100 available safety and security features, the Uconnect Theater rear seat entertainment system, and a full array of comfort and convenience technologies, the Chrysler Pacifica and Pacifica Hybrid are no-compromise minivans ideally suited for today's families.

3.6-liter Pentastar eHybrid

3.6-liter Pentastar eHybrid Named One of Wards 10 Best Engines for Second Year in a Row

Plug-in hybrid propulsion system powers most fuel-efficient minivan ever – the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid
3.6-liter Pentastar eHybrid helps 2018 Pacifica Hybrid achieve EPA fuel-economy rating of 84 MPGe, electric-only range of 33 miles and total driving range of 570 miles
Nearly half of Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid customer survey respondents report better-than-expected range
Dual-motor eFlite electrically variable transmission contributes to unparalleled efficiency
Eighth consecutive year and 18th overall that FCA US represented among Wards 10 Best Engines
More than 70 awards now associated with Chrysler Pacifica lineup

December 14, 2017 , Auburn Hills, Mich. -

Editors at WardsAuto have named the 3.6-liter Pentastar eHybrid one of Wards 10 Best Engines for 2018.

The achievement marks the second time the powertrain has been so-honored. The 3.6-liter Pentastar eHybrid was named to the prestigious annual list last year, when it debuted in the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivan.

The plug-in hybrid propulsion system makes the Pacifica Hybrid the most efficient minivan ever, based on its Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rating of 84 miles-per-gallon-equivalent (MPGe) – a measure that accounts for a plug-in hybrid vehicle’s blended use of electricity and gasoline, in combined city- and highway-cycle testing.

The 2018 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid also excels on two other efficiency fronts, with EPA driving-range ratings of 33 miles in electric-only mode, and 570 total miles.

“We knew this was a special project when we were asked to develop the most fuel-efficient minivan ever,” says Bob Lee, Head of Engine Powertrain and Electrified Propulsion Systems Engineering, FCA – North America. “Receiving this award, especially for the second time, validates our early conviction – as do reports from our customers.”

FCA US has engaged 100 Pacifica Hybrid customers who have agreed to participate in monthly ownership-experience surveys over a two-year period. To date, 47 percent of respondents report more driving range than expected, with 22 percent saying they have observed “much more.”

Wards 10 Best Engines judge Drew Winter echoes this satisfaction.

“The Pacifica Hybrid is a big, seven-passenger plug-in hybrid minivan with all the bells and whistles families have come to adore, but with 33 miles of full electric range and levels of fuel efficiency unimaginable just a few short years ago,” says Drew Winter, Senior Content Director at WardsAuto. “With most owners using their minivans to run errands and occasionally take a long-distance drive, the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is a stroke of genius.”

Central to the vehicle’s performance is its eFlite electrically variable transmission. An in-house FCA US innovation, it was developed by a team of engineers assigned exclusively to the task of delivering a high-efficiency driving experience that retains the functionality customers expect from minivans.

Conventional electrification schemes dedicate one motor to serve as a generator and a second motor, usually much larger, to deliver torque to the wheels. The eFlite gearbox uses a one-way clutch that enables the motor typically used only as a generator, to power the wheels, depending on driving conditions.

The result is increased efficiency, refinement, and improved component packaging.

The lifeblood of the 2018 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is its 16-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, which is located under the second-row floor. Recharging can take as little as two hours using an optional 240-volt (Level 2) charger, available from Mopar through dealers.

When the battery’s energy is depleted to a certain threshold, the Pacifica Hybrid becomes a part-time electric vehicle, like a conventional hybrid, to maximize energy and efficiency. Power to the wheels is supplied by the electric drive system or supplemented by a specially adapted version of the gasoline-powered Pentastar 3.6-liter V-6, which was named one of Wards 10 Best Engines in 2011, 2012 and 2013.

“Imagine the convenience that comes with plugging in at home, instead of stopping at the gas station once or twice a week,” says Tim Kuniskis, Head of Passenger Car Brands – Dodge, SRT, Chrysler and FIAT, FCA – North America. “Now combine that with the capacity to transport up to seven people in superior comfort. That makes the 2018 Chrysler Pacifica minivan a mobility solution like no other. And it’s not just us, who say it. Today’s announcement is the latest in a series of such honors.”

To date, the entire Chrysler Pacifica lineup has accounted for 72 industry awards tied to safety, quality, styling and performance.

The EPA gives the 2018 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid a rating of 10, the best-possible rating, for its impact on climate change in terms of greenhouse-gas emissions.

Further, an FCA US comparison between the Pacifica Hybrid and the vehicle it replaced in the Chrysler-brand lineup, indicates the electrified minivan will, over its lifetime, result in emissions-savings equivalent to:

the average annual C02 output of 22 American households
14 commercial flights from Detroit to Los Angeles
driving the average U.S. passenger vehicle more than 50,000 miles

In the 22-year history of Wards 10 Best Engines, FCA US lays claim to eight powertrains that made the prestigious list. They account for 18 awards.

Chrysler Pacifica remains the most awarded minivan of both 2016 and 2017

December 15, 2017 , Windsor, Ontario -

For the second year in a row, Chrysler Pacifica has been named AutoTRADER.ca’s Top Pick for Minivan.

This is the second year of the awards from one of Canada’s largest and most respected automotive portals, decided on by a roster of top automotive journalists. All vehicles currently on sale in the Canadian marketplace are considered in 14 categories.

Despite new or reinvigorated minivan competition, the Chrysler Pacifica again earned the top spot amongst its peers based on measures such as value, innovation, performance, comfort, technology and ultimate desirability.

What’s more, for the first time, the industry-first Pacifica Hybrid was factored into the expert judges’ decision. Pacifica Hybrid takes the minivan a step further with its innovative, advanced hybrid powertrain, achieving 2.6 Le/100km [109 miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe)] in city driving, 53 kilometres of all-electric range and 911 km of total driving range.

“Now with added plug-in hybrid capability, the Chrysler Pacifica is not only the most attractive and feature-rich minivan on the market, but the most environmentally friendly as well,” said AutoTRADER.ca Managing Editor, Michael Bettencourt. “For its ability to haul the family without using their weight in fuel, the Chrysler Pacifica is a natural choice for Top Minivan.”

Both Chrysler Pacifica and Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid are proudly Canadian-made at the award-winning Windsor Assembly Plant (WAP), alongside the Dodge Grand Caravan. FCA invented the minivan segment more than 30 years ago and remains the dominant player, with nearly 70 per cent of full-size minivans sold last year in Canada built at WAP.

“To have Chrysler Pacifica win back-to-back awards from the AutoTRADER.ca judges is further validation of the innovation and leadership we maintain in the minivan segment,” said Reid Bigland, President and CEO, FCA Canada. “We are proud of how our minivans, including the segment-first Pacifica Hybrid, continue to raise the bar in terms of the style, versatility and technology possible in a vehicle that is perfectly suited for Canadian families.”

This 2018 AutoTRADER.ca Top Pick award is only the latest for Chrysler Pacifica, which remains the most awarded minivan of both 2016 and 2017. Other accolades from this year include: North American Utility of the Year, Best New Large Utility Vehicle from the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada, 2018 Consumer Guide Automotive Best Buys and a Best Car to Buy nod for Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid from Green Car Reports.

About the 2018 Chrysler Pacifica and Pacifica Hybrid

With more than 100 available safety and security features, the Uconnect Theatre rear-seat entertainment system, and a full array of comfort and convenience technologies, the Chrysler Pacifica is a no-compromises minivan ideally suited for today's families and has earned its spot as the most awarded minivan of the year.

The Pacifica Hybrid takes this revolutionary vehicle a step further with its innovative, advanced hybrid powertrain. Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Named Plug-in Hybrid Electric Category Winner

FCA Canada: Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Named Plug-in Hybrid Electric Category Winner in 2018 Canadian Green Car Awards

Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is now a finalist for the overall 2018 Canadian Green Car Award
Four finalists were selected after extensive testing and assessment by judges – all leading Canadian automotive journalists
Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is the industry’s only plug-in hybrid electric minivan and features an advanced powertrain which delivers a seamless, efficient driving experience with an estimated electric range of up to 53 kilometres, up to 911 kilometres of total range and an estimated 2.6 Le/100km (109 MPGe) in city driving

April 4, 2018 , Windsor, Ontario -

The 2018 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid has been named the best Plug-in Hybrid Electric vehicle by the Canadian Green Car Awards steering committee.

Made in Windsor, Ontario, the industry’s only plug-in hybrid electric minivan is now a finalist for the overall 2018 Canadian Green Car Award, to be announced on Friday, April 6, at the Green Living Show in Toronto.

“We are proud to have expert, third-party recognition for Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid from the judges of the Canadian Green Car Awards,” said Reid Bigland, President and CEO, FCA Canada. “The Pacifica Hybrid’s combination of game-changing efficiency, seating for seven, cutting-edge technology and 100-plus advanced safety features are unmatched in the industry.”

From an initial list of 12 “green” vehicles, the judges – all expert automotive journalists – narrowed the list to four category winners and finalists, including Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid. For the first time in the Award’s six-year history, all finalists have been previous category winners. Pacifica Hybrid won last year as "Best Efficient Three-row Family Vehicle."

Said the steering committee: “The Canadian Green Car Award… recognizes vehicles that offer impressive 'green' attributes combined with strong mass-market appeal, based on the understanding that any product can have a significant environmental impact only if it sells in large numbers.

To achieve this result, the assessments combined 'objective' criteria, such as fuel economy, emissions and price, with the judges’ evaluations of performance, driving experience, value, features and 'green' qualities.”

June 26, 2018 , Auburn Hills, Mich. -

The 2018 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid takes home two titles from the Northwest Automotive Press Association’s (NWAPA) 2018 Drive Revolution green vehicle competition, including the Northwest Green Vehicle of the Year and, for the second year in a row, the Northwest Family-sized Plug-in Hybrid of the Year.

"The Pacifica Hybrid's 84 MPGe and 33 miles of all-electric range saves you hundreds in fuel costs each year over the average new minivan or SUV," said Sarah Shelton, Drive Revolution Chair of U.S. News & World Report. "But what's particularly remarkable is that you can achieve this fuel economy while also carrying a family of seven in the front and a suitcase for everyone in the back. This, along with a notable amount of standard equipment, makes the Pacifica Hybrid a truly family-friendly vehicle."

NWAPA members gathered at the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site to drive 19 vehicles, including battery-electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids and full hybrids. After a full day of testing through the streets of Vancouver, Washington, NWAPA journalists named the 2018 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid as the Northwest Green Vehicle of the Year. The Pacifica Hybrid, which also won the award as the Best Family-sized Plug-in Hybrid by a landslide, was named the overall winner for its combination of fuel-efficiency, ample cabin space, user-friendly amenities and value.
