The performance hood features a center air inlet duct flanked by heat extractors, a front lower valence that houses a new cold-air duct system and LED fog lamps. Durango GT models equipped with the Blacktop or Brass Monkey appearance package now offer the performance hood, first seen on Durango SRT, as an available option.

2018 Dodge Durango SRT Review

2018 Dodge Durango SRT Review

Jul 19, 2017

In a bid to keep their rowdy populations distracted from the crushing grind of their daily lives, the ancient Romans held enormous gladiatorial circuses designed to stir the blood and fan the flames of passion in a decidedly non-revolutionary direction.
FAST FACTS

Engine: 6.4L V8

Output: 475 hp, 470 lb-ft of torque

Transmission: 8-speed automatic

US Fuel Economy (mpg): 13 city, 19 hwy, 15 combined

CAN Fuel Economy (L/100 km): TBA

US Price: Starts at $64,095

CAN Price: Starts at $74,290

(All pricing includes destination)

With the 2018 Dodge Durango SRT, it’s clear that FCA is employing similar tactics to get in touch with the rebel lurking within the hearts of crossover-bound commuters, offering them an eminently practical three-row SUV whose ridiculously powerful V8 engine screams “ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?” in stereo from each of its twin tailpipes.

While the Durango SRT’s spiritual lineage may arch back over thousands of years of history, its oily bits are a good deal more recent. The sport-utility rides on a stretched version of the same platform that underpins the very successful Jeep Grand Cherokee, which means when the SRT team came calling, it was a relatively simple matter to swap over the Grand Cherokee SRT’s drivetrain into the Durango’s welcoming chassis.

It’s this Jeep connection that goes a long way towards explaining why Dodge has me sitting on the pit lane at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, ready to tackle an abbreviated version of the famous race venue’s infield GP course from behind the wheel of 5,500-plus pounds of people mover. I’d be nervous, had I not already experienced first-hand just how amazingly capable the Durango SRT’s Grand Cherokee sibling felt on the similarly world class Circuit of the America’s Formula One configuration several years previous.

Also reassuring is the Dodge Durango SRT’s on-paper persona, as described by its spec sheet. With a 6.4-liter V8 engine churning out 475 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, matched with an eight-speed automatic transmission and full-time AWD, the Durango SRT has the skills to lay down a quarter mile pass of 12.9 seconds, with a 4.4-second sprint to 60 mph wedged in there, too. More germane to my immediate situation, however, is the SUV’s upgraded suspension system, which relies primarily on its adaptive dampers linked to the vehicle’s various drive modes as well as the enormous 295/45R-20 Pirelli P-Zero tires fitted at each corner. Together with the all-wheel drive system’s ability to actively manage torque distribution, it’s these improvements that give the truck a fighting chance to slip the surly bounds of Earth and at the very least mimic the grace of a sport sedan.

Leaving the pits in rapid-fire succession of barks from the 2.75-inch exhaust reveals immediately that the transmission’s reprogramming has dramatically shortened shift times, with SRT claiming a 50 percent reduction in Track mode versus Auto (and a 23 percent improvement when set to Sport). In fact, the SUV’s gearbox is so adept at selecting the appropriate forward ratio that I made no attempt to correct it via the provided paddle shifters, preferring instead to concentrate on steering the bulky bruiser. It was here that I made my second surprising discovery of the day: regardless of how heftily the Durango SRT might tip the scales, it demonstrated remarkably little understeer when asked to change direction, a tribute in part to the 52/48 weight balance made possible by its longer wheelbase and third-row seat. Even braking from 105 mph (168 km/h) at the end of Indy’s ultra-long front straight was drama free thanks to the efforts of the Dodge’s massive 15-inch six-piston front and 13.8-inch four-piston rear Brembo brakes.

The Dodge Durango SRT’s ability to almost casually handle the twists and turns at Indy demonstrates just how far both tire technology and chassis tuning have come over the past five years. As fast and competent as the SUV might be though, and despite SRT’s intention to erase the 200 lbs of weight difference between the Durango and the Grand Cherokee by introducing a third-row/towing package delete, there’s still more novelty than engagement on offer when lapping a road course. I’d be more likely to keep the Durango SRT as-is and use its whopping 8,700 lbs of towing capacity to cart my own car to the track than to deputize the seven-seater through the esses.

The Dodge’s fantastic acceleration and passing power on the street are underscored by the surprisingly civilized nature of its daily drive. With its tow rating untouched as compared to the standard Durango, and its springs and rear swaybar only marginally stiffer than the 5.7-liter edition of the truck, the only sacrifice you’ll be making is whenever you have to fill up its undoubtedly thirsty fuel tank. Official figures place the Durango SRT at a similar-to-GC-SRT 15 mpg (15.7 L/100 km) combined.

And, of course, there’s also the pain induced by the Durango SRT’s purchase price. This is a truck that starts at $63,000 ($72,495 in Canada) but is more realistically price closer to $70k once you’ve optioned it how you’d want it. This puts it head-and-shoulders above its domestic brethren when cross-shopping similarly comfortable and useful three-row rivals. Besides the performance upgrades, the only other difference is cosmetic stuff, which makes it even harder to justify that price. While nothing in its class can compare in a straight line (you’ll have to seek out AMG or Range Rover-badged fare for a true drag strip challenge to the SRT), you have to really want a muscle car-shaming behemoth to be comfortable paying premium coin for a Dodge. Jeep, with its more upscale market position, doesn’t have quite the same issue with its own hotted-up SUV.
The Verdict: 2018 Dodge Durango SRT Review

Then again, are there really any casual SRT buyers out there? I’d venture that the answer to that question is no. The 2018 Dodge Durango SRT was built to satisfy a pre-existing audience of high-horsepower fans seeking for a tow vehicle that can least pretend to keep up with the Hellcat already in the garage. It’s the perfect lifestyle accessory for the SRT completist, and it makes all the right noises required to intimidate the more frugal crossover parked next to you at the mall.

Low range improves light off-road performance and helps ease maneuvers, such as pulling a boat up a steep launch or backing up with a trailer. The neutral position in the transfer case allows the vehicle to be flat-towed without damaging powertrain components
The 2018 Dodge Durango features a standard eight-speed automatic transmission with driver-oriented electronic shifter and steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters
With standard five-passenger seating, optional seven-passenger seating and second-row captain’s chairs available on GT, R/T and Citadel models, the seats in the 2018 Dodge Durango can be configured in 50 different ways. Durango SRT features standard second-row captain’s chairs and six-passenger seating
Families with three or more children will find the Durango’s available captain’s chairs with pass through especially helpful as two car seats can be latched into each of the second-row seats, and there’s still easy pass-through for passengers to walk between to get to the third row
A versatile 60/40 split folding second-row seat conveniently folds and tumbles. Transporting long items, like 10-foot 2x4s, is not a problem as the left side of the second-row folds 60 percent, allowing the versatility of folding the 40 percent seat in tandem with the front passenger fold-flat seat. To make passengers more comfortable, second-row seats also are available with heat and they recline 18 degrees
The third-row seat features a 50/50 split and is easily folded from the rear of the vehicle. For even more utility, both the second- and third-row seats fold to provide a flat load floor. A switch in the instrument panel remotely lowers third-row headrests when not in use
Uconnect is available via either a standard 7-inch or available 8.4-inch touchscreen, the latter of which is the largest touchscreen in its class and features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
Durango offers a class-exclusive Blu-ray video rear entertainment system with two high-resolution 9-inch screens, one on each front seat back. Each screen allows customers to watch their movies on Blu-ray or standard DVDs or play their gaming systems via inputs for HDMI or RCA cables for each screen integrated into the front seat backs. Wireless headphones are included as is a wireless remote
The 2018 Dodge Durango offers consumers more than 60 available safety and security features, with seven standard airbags, including full-length three-row side-curtain airbags, standard front-seat mounted side-thorax air bags, front-row active head restraints, standard trailer-sway control and available forward collision warning with crash mitigation, adaptive cruise control with stop, Blind-spot Monitoring (BSM) and Rear Cross Path (RCP) detection, Uconnect Access with 9-1-1 call and roadside assistance

Enhanced SRT Interior Appearance Group brings authentic carbon fiber upgrades to the Durango SRT’s cabin
New Mopar performance exhaust systems improve flow and add an unmistakable note — available on Dodge Durango R/T and SRT

Dodge Durango SRT is the most powerful and fastest three-row SUV with its legendary 475-horsepower HEMI® V-8 engine and National Hot Rod Association–certified quarter-mile time of 12.9 seconds that also outhauls every three-row SUV on the road with best-in-class towing capability of 8,700 pounds

February 7, 2018 , Auburn Hills, Mich. -

New dual-center exterior stripes are tailored to emphasize the functional yet aggressive exterior designs of the 2018 Dodge Durango R/T and SRT models.

Performance enthusiasts looking for a three-row SUV with a factory-custom look need look no further than the 2018 Dodge Durango.

New for 2018, Durango R/T and SRT models will feature factory-custom stripes and available performance exhaust systems. The Durango SRT will also offer an available carbon fiber interior and performance lowering spring kit, giving the menacing SUV an even lower stance and improved handling. Dodge will showcase the new features at the 2018 Chicago Auto Show, Feb. 7-19.

“Our Dodge//SRT performance enthusiasts are always looking for ways to make their vehicle their own,” said Steve Beahm, Head of Passenger Cars, Dodge//SRT, Chrysler and FIAT, FCA – North America. “The available stripes and carbon fiber throughout the interior really give Durango a custom look from the factory, and they are perfectly complemented by Mopar’s available exhaust systems and performance springs, which make Durango even more fun to drive.”

New features available in the coming months include:

New dual-center exterior stripe design covers the front and rear fascias, hood, portions of the roof and the tailgate. The dual stripe is tailored to the signature NACA duct-hood vent to emphasize the Durango R/T and Durango SRT models functional yet aggressive design. With a U.S. Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $1,195, the stripes are offered in five colors: Bright Blue, Flame Red, Gunmetal Low Gloss (metallic finish), Low Gloss Black and Sterling Silver (metallic finish). Dealer orders for the new stripe package will start in March 2018.
Mopar’s new performance exhaust systems are bolt on, high-performance units factory-tuned for improved flow, sound and overall performance. The exhaust system’s chromium 304 stainless steel construction improves corrosion resistance. Stainless steel band-style clamps provide tight seals and make installation easy. Welded and polished 4-inch tips provide an aggressive appearance. Both exhaust systems were developed in concert with Dodge//SRT engineers and designers, which provided access to proprietary sound data, creating unique and unmistakable sound characteristics. The new performance exhaust system for the Durango SRT (Part Number 77072487) is priced at a U.S. MSRP of $1,850 and will be available in the second quarter of 2018. The new Durango R/T system (Part Number 77072479) is priced at a U.S. MSRP of $1,595 and is available now.
Mopar’s performance lowering spring kit enhances the Durango SRT’s already outstanding high-speed cornering stability and consistency. The new springs lower the fastest SUV in its class an average of 15 mm (0.6 inches) closer to the pavement for improved handling and an in-your-face vehicle stance. As with the performance exhaust, Mopar worked closely with Dodge//SRT engineers and used proprietary data — unavailable to the aftermarket — to tune the lowering springs to the factory-fitted dampers. Performance gains include less rear-end squat during acceleration, less nose dive under braking and reduced body roll while cornering. The new performance lowering spring kit (Part Number 77072488) is priced at a U.S. MSRP of $325 and will be available in March.
The new SRT Interior Appearance Group, which features a premium-wrapped instrument panel, Dinamica soft-touch headliner and accent paint on speaker trim rings, adds an authentic carbon-fiber instrument panel and door bezels. Available for orders in February at a U.S. MSRP of $2,495.

April 4, 2018 , Auburn Hills, Mich. -

The 2018 Dodge Durango SRT is the Rocky Mountain Automotive Press (RMAP) association’s 2018 Crossover of the Year, an honor announced at the Charity Preview Party before the Denver Auto Show on April 3, 2018.

To determine the winners, RMAP members — all automotive journalists in the Rocky Mountain region, including Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Nebraska, Utah, Wyoming and Montana — evaluated dozens of new or significantly updated vehicles for 2018 to determine which best fit the Rocky Mountain lifestyle. The new Dodge Durango SRT drove home with the honors in the crossover-SUV category.

“The 2018 Dodge Durango SRT made a great impression in its first RMAP event by how well-integrated this high-performance vehicle is for the Rocky Mountain region,” said David Muramoto, President-RMAP. “From clean, functional styling to how well the powerful drivetrain and electronic systems work together, the Dodge//SRT team did fine work in impressing RMAP voters.”

The 2018 Dodge Durango SRT is America’s fastest, most powerful and most capable three-row SUV with its 475-horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque stemming from the legendary 392-cubic-inch HEMI® V-8 engine, a National Hot Rod Association-certified quarter-mile time of 12.9 seconds and can go 0-60 miles per hour in 4.4 seconds. Durango SRT also outhauls every three-row SUV on the road with best-in-class towing capability of 8,700 pounds.

Exterior performance features include widebody exterior design and functional SRT hood with center air duct flanked by heat extractors, as well as a new front fascia and lower valence to house new cold-air duct and LED fog lamps. New dual-center stripes are available in five different colors (Bright Blue, Flame Red, Gunmetal Low Gloss, Low Gloss Black and Sterling Silver) to add a sinister factory-custom look.

Named to Wards 10 Best User Experience List for 2017, the Durango SRT offers an array of advanced technology features and comes equipped with a new Uconnect fourth-generation system that includes performance improvements with quicker startup time and enhanced processing power. Durango SRT is available with the class-exclusive 8.4-inch touchscreen, which offers multi-touch gestures, vivid imagery, sharper graphics, new SRT Performance Pages and the ability to support smartphone integrations of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Durango SRT’s performance interior also features standard leather and suede, available high-performance Demonic Red Laguna leather seating and an enhanced SRT Interior Appearance Group that brings authentic carbon fiber upgrades to the cabin.

All customers who buy a new Durango SRT will receive one full-day session at the Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving in Chandler, Arizona.

Dodge is expanding its police vehicle lineup, adding a new Pursuit version of its Dodge Durango.

“Unofficial testing results at the Michigan State Police 2018 model-year vehicle evaluation event created such a stir among law enforcement agencies that we simply had to find a way to build this vehicle,” said Steve Beahm, Head of Passenger Car Brands, Dodge//SRT, Chrysler and FIAT – FCA North America. “The Dodge Durango is already known as the Charger of SUVs, so it is only natural that the new Durango Pursuit complements the Charger Pursuit in police fleets across the country.”
