February 4, 2020 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - Mopar and Dodge//SRT are just days away from kicking off another competitive season in the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Mello Yello Drag Racing Series.
Commencing with the 60th annual NHRA Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway in Pomona, California, on February 6-9, the 2020 season’s 24-race calendar will see Mopar and Dodge//SRT once again divide title sponsorship duties at four NHRA national race events:
  • April 16-19 – Mopar Express Lane NHRA SpringNationals near Houston
  • July 17-19 – Dodge Mile-High NHRA Nationals in Denver
  • Sept. 17-20 – Mopar Express Lane NHRA Nationals in Reading, Pennsylvania
  • Oct. 29-Nov. 1 – Dodge NHRA Nationals in Las Vegas
This year’s spotlight will be on the full-time HEMI®-powered entries from Don Schumacher Racing (DSR) in both Funny Car and Top Fuel classes, continued Mopar and Dodge//SRT brand support in the NHRA’s Sportsman classes, as well as on the debut of a fourth-generation Challenger Drag Pak.

Funny Car
After amassing 12 NHRA World Championships and 267 event wins (150 Funny Car, 111 Top Fuel, three Pro Stock and three Factory Super Stock) since 2003, Mopar Dodge//SRT and DSR are ready to race into their 18th season together. All four DSR Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Funny Car entries wrapped up last year’s campaign in the top 10 after earning a combined 11 victories. The 2020 DSR driver lineup remains unchanged, as does the ultimate goal: more wins and the addition of another Funny Car championship.

Teammates Jack Beckman and Matt Hagan made solid runs in the NHRA’s Countdown to the Championship to put both drivers in position to vie for the championship title at the season finale.

While Beckman and his Infinite Hero Foundation Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat didn’t get to repeat his 2012 World Championship title win, he did finish runner-up in the 2019 Funny Car standings by capping off the year at Pomona with his first-ever home track win to earn his second victory of the year. “Fast Jack” also started the Countdown in Reading, Pennsylvania, with a Wally trophy at the Mopar Express Lane NHRA Nationals Presented by Pennzoil race.

Hagan, a two-time NHRA World Champion (2011 and 2014), looks to start 2020 where he left off, by building on the momentum of his third-place finish in the 2019 NHRA Countdown. He and his team took the Mopar/Pennzoil/Sandvik Coromant Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat to victory circle four times last season with wins at Phoenix, Epping, New Hampshire, and two more during the playoffs at the Dallas FallNationals and Las Vegas at the Dodge NHRA Nationals Presented by Pennzoil.

2017 Funny Car Champion Ron Capps drove his HEMI®-powered Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat to three wins last year to put him firmly in the Top 10 in points for a 15th consecutive season. Capps’ sixth-place finish in the standings was also highlighted by his performance at the 35th annual Mopar Express Lane NHRA Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway, earning his 24th career No. 1 qualifier honor with a track record and career-best run of 3.837 seconds at 339.28 mph, the second fastest speed in NHRA history.

DSR teammate Tommy Johnson Jr. finished eighth overall with two trips to the victory circle in the Make-A-Wish Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat, earning win lights at Chicago and Denver’s Dodge Mile-High NHRA Nationals Presented by Pennzoil. This season he will campaign in the MD Anderson Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat.
Among the additional HEMI-powered entries expected to also battle in the competitive 2020 Funny Car category is Cruz Pedregon who, for a second consecutive year, will compete full-time aboard a Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat.

Top Fuel
DSR’s Mopar Dodge//SRT Top Fuel Dragster returns to competition this season with Leah Pritchett at the helm. Pritchett drove her HEMI-powered dragster to the final round win at Brainerd, Minnesota, then scored a pair of No. 2 qualifier positions before earning the top qualifier spots at both the Dodge NHRA Nationals Presented by Pennzoil at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and the season finale at Pomona to finish a career-best fourth place in the Top Fuel championship rankings last season.

Sportsman Class
The Mopar Contingency Program continues its long-running support of the NHRA Sportsman class racers through 2020 with monetary awards for drivers who win or finish runner-up while running a Mopar contingency decal and using specified parts, including the brand’s valve covers, intake manifolds and cylinder heads. For a fourth consecutive year, the Dodge Top Finisher Awards will provide $500 to Stock Eliminator and Super Stock drivers who advance the furthest at the wheel of a Mopar-powered Dodge, Chrysler or Plymouth race car at all 24 NHRA national events.

Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak
DSR will once again campaign two Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak entries in the 2020 Factory Stock Showdown, an eight-race series in the Sportsman class, that will see the Mopar and Dodge//SRT racetrack-only factory-built vehicles compete in a heads-up contest against Ford Mustang Cobra Jets and Chevrolet COPO Camaros.

Drivers Leah Pritchett and Mark Pawuk will both return for a third season of competition with the team. This time, however, in a new, fourth-generation version of the Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak car, unveiled at the 2019 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show.

The first V-8 Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak made its Sportsman class debut in 2009 and was followed up with a race-ready V-10 package in 2011. A third-generation 2015 Challenger Drag Pak introduced the first supercharged 354 HEMI and a naturally aspirated 426 Gen-III HEMI to competition, and ran 8.0-second ETs
right out of the box.

In 2018, Pritchett sped to the first official 7-second run aboard the third-generation Challenger Drag Pak and amassed three wins on her way to capturing the 2018 NHRA Factory Stock Showdown World Championship. In 2019, a runner-up finish at the season finale in Dallas secured a second-straight Top 10 finish.

Mark Pawuk earned No. 1 qualifier honors in St. Louis (2018) and Indianapolis (2019) and drove to two final round appearances in 2018 at Norwalk and Indianapolis. He looks to race at all eight events this season aboard his Empaco Equipment Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak.

Mopar Career Automotive Program (CAP)
After partnering with the NHRA’s Youth & Education Service (YES) program at seven national race events in 2019, the Mopar Career Automotive Program (CAP), an FCA program established in 1984 with the aim of developing the next generation of automotive service technicians, has committed to participate in 15 events this upcoming season.

The NHRA’s YES program provides exposure to exciting career paths, including automotive (technician) careers, to both middle school and high school students with a day at the race track. Students receive information from CAP representatives, as well as highly engaging speeches from Mopar Dodge//SRT drivers.

“The partnership with YES dovetails into our efforts to show those following the Mopar CAP program just how far they can go, whether it’s building a career with one of our 2,600 dealerships or working on one of our brands in the racing industry,” said Keith Yancy, who heads the Mopar CAP program. “The need for these skills is intense and the statistics show that demand for automotive technicians will only increase over time.”

Mopar CAP offers tailored service technician courses through 100 certified training institutions, such as universities, colleges, community colleges and technical centers. The curriculum is designed to immediately place students in FCA dealerships upon graduation. There are more than 9,000 active students enrolled in the Mopar CAP program.

Mopar Dodge//SRT Ready to Return to Racing With Restart of 2020 NHRA Season in Indianapolis
  • Mopar Dodge//SRT get back on track this weekend after a four-month hiatus with the restart of the 2020 National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Mello Yello Drag Racing Series at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis
  • Mopar Dodge//SRT entries return with four Don Schumacher Racing (DSR) Dodge Charger SRT Hellcats in Funny Car and one Mopar Dodge//SRT Top Fuel Dragster at the E3 Spark Plugs NHRA Nationals on July 11-12
  • Shortened season will still see Mopar and Dodge//SRT as event title sponsors at four of the remaining 16 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series races
  • All four DSR Dodge Charger Hellcats sit top-5 in Funny Car Championship points standings
  • DSR Mopar Dodge//SRT Top Fuel Dragster restarts season top-3 in points standings with Leah Pruett

July 9, 2020 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - A much anticipated return to National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Mello Yello Drag Racing Series racing takes place this weekend at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis for Mopar, Dodge//SRT and the Don Schumacher Racing (DSR) team, following a hiatus of more than four months.

Following the suspension of the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic on March 12, just prior to the third event of the year at the NHRA Gatornationals in Gainesville, Florida, the remaining 16-event shortened schedule kicks off with a pair of weekend events in Indianapolis. Race weekends will be shortened to two-day events with qualifying held Saturday only and final eliminations on Sunday.

The E3 Spark Plugs NHRA Nationals on July 11-12 and Lucas Oil NHRA Summernationals on July 18-19 will be the first major-league auto-racing events in the state of Indiana to allow fans this year. Beginning Aug. 7-9, the series begins a 13-consecutive-week stretch of non-stop drag racing to battle for pro-category championships. During that stretch, Mopar and Dodge//SRT remain event title sponsors at four national events on the new schedule:
  • Aug. 7-9 – Dodge Mile-High NHRA Nationals in Denver
  • Sept. 11-13 – Mopar Express Lane NHRA Nationals in Reading, Pennsylvania
  • Oct. 23-25 – Mopar Express Lane NHRA SpringNationals Presented By Pennzoil near Houston
  • Oct. 30-Nov. 1 – Dodge NHRA Nationals in Las Vegas
FUNNY CAR NOTES & QUOTES
Mopar Dodge//SRT restart their 18th season with DSR with all four Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Funny Cars in the top 5 in points. Mopar Dodge//SRT enters this weekend’s competition with five consecutive drives to the winner’s circle at race events dating back to Dallas in October 2019.

Matt Hagan, Mopar Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Funny Car
Two-time Funny Car world champion and driver of the Mopar Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat, Matt Hagan made his professional debut in Indianapolis at the 2008 U.S. Nationals. He is looking to move up from a fifth-place spot in the Funny Car championship standings after a pair of No. 1 qualifier honors and two round wins to start the 2020 season.

"I’m really excited about getting back to racing in Indy. We’re such a fan-engaged sport – we’re so used to being able to take pictures with the fans, fist bumps, all that, and it’ll be a different vibe. We did some virtual autograph sessions with Mopar during our downtime and that was cool and I think our fans really enjoyed that. At the end of the day, we’re entertainers and we’re going to make sure we entertain our fans and make sure we give them a great show on the race track. I’m just excited to be able to be back and be able to rep our partners in Mopar, Pennzoil and Sandvik on the track. Every weekend, you’re so used to driving 330 mph. I never thought there was anything other than racing, but it’s been good being able to spend some time at home growing my businesses. I was able to get a really good handle on these companies I’m growing and now I’m able to fully focus on racing again. We had a really great car when we left off. We were No. 1 qualifier at the first two events and I’m excited to get back in my Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat. Bring it on, let’s go do this."

Jack Beckman, Infinite Hero Foundation Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat
Jack Beckman is the current Funny Car points leader after a win and runner-up finish in the first two events of the season aboard his Infinite Hero Foundation Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat. Beckman is seeking a third consecutive final round appearance in 2020 this weekend and is bolstered by his 2019 performance at Indianapolis when he earned the Funny Car No. 1 qualifier and a runner-up finish in the NHRA U.S. Nationals.

"Everybody is talking about getting back to business as usual and in racing we’re going to be getting back to business but there’s nothing usual about it. This is completely unprecedented. We’re going to lose Friday qualifying at every race from here on out and that could drastically change your approach as a crew chief and as a driver just in qualifying. And then none of us have been in a race car for probably the longest period in our drag racing careers, so we’re going to get to make shakedown runs the day before a race weekend. I don’t think that’s been allowed for nearly 50 years in drag racing. So, the scenario is what it is and we’re all going to do our best to make things get back to whatever ‘normal’ is as quick as possible but I’ve got to tell you, I’ve had driving withdrawals and now I feel like it’s so sudden. After waiting for so many months I’m looking at the calendar and it’s like when you’re a kid getting ready to go back to school. I just can’t wait to get my bag packed and get on that airplane."

Tommy Johnson Jr., MD Anderson Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Funny Car
Winner of the last event before the season was suspended at the NHRA Arizona Nationals in February, Tommy Johnson Jr. is second in the Funny Car points standings.

"I’m certainly excited about going back racing but it’s been a long period of downtime and there are some jitters that go along with that. Being out of the car for so long, it’s going to take a few runs to get back into the swing of it. We were doing so well and had some good momentum going before the break and you hope that continues. You park the car and don’t touch it for so long and it’s been sitting there ready to go for a while. We had an opportunity to improve on it, we put on a new front half. We have a great team and a great car. It’ll take a little bit of getting used to those first days back but that’s the same for everyone. It’s going to be great to get back to some sort of normalcy, even though there will be some restrictions. I’d love nothing more than to pull off a win at both of these Indy races and take the lead in the points."

Ron Capps, NAPA Auto Parts Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Funny Car
Driver of the HEMI®-powered Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat, Ron Capps sits fourth in points and is looking to earn a win at the only racetrack on the circuit at which he has never earned a Wally trophy.

"2020 has been full of surprises, to say the least. It’s going to be nice to get a little bit of normalcy back in our racing lives. Once NHRA announced that we had these two races in Indianapolis, it didn’t seem like it was going to get here fast enough and now we’re finally here. The fact that we’re going to be on FOX network on Sunday is a great thing for motorsports fans.

"It’s going to be a treacherous, hot, humid weekend, which we know can be very difficult, especially with 11,000-horsepower nitro engines. I brag about the NAPA Know How with our team and we’ve shown that we can run in those conditions as good as anybody. This is going to test a lot of people. We’ll get a couple of shakedown runs on Friday and then it’s just two rounds of qualifying on Saturday, so you’re not going to have a whole lot of data to go off of. That’s why the way that Rahn Tobler and I and our whole NAPA team work together is so important and these conditions will test every bit of every crew member. I’m looking forward to the challenge. Can’t wait to get back into the NAPA car and step on the gas for the first time and just relive what made me fall in love with driving a nitro Funny Car. Hopefully, the NAPA team will be on FOX on Sunday afternoon standing with a Wally from Indianapolis."

TOP FUEL NOTES & QUOTES

Leah Pruett, Mopar Dodge//SRT Top Fuel Dragster

DSR’s Mopar Dodge//SRT Top Fuel Dragster returns to competition with Leah Pruett at the helm and sitting third in points.

"I feel like we’ve all been living the real-life motorsports version of double-dutch, waiting for the right time and circumstances, and it’s finally our turn to return. Excited would normally be the term used for the feeling I get when race week nears, but I honestly feel the more precise description is ‘ready.’ We already had a strong performing race car when the hiatus began and this Mopar crew has taken this time to ensure that performance stays maximized. I’ve properly filled my time with various athletic activities and attending/watching other racing, but have confirmed that nothing comes close to the sensory impact of nitro racing. Composure within competition has been a focus of mine during this time and there is nothing more in this world that I am looking forward to more than strapping back into our Mopar Top Fueler and chasing that Wally."

  • Mopar Dodge//SRT Funny Car of Matt Hagan and Mopar Dodge//SRT Top Fuel Dragster of Leah Pruett from Don Schumacher Racing (DSR) will be sporting new “Demon-possessed” SRT Hellcat Redeye paint schemes as they return to Indianapolis for the Lucas Oil NHRA Summernationals on July 18-19
  • Fierce new paint schemes promote the recent reveal of the 2021 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye, the most powerful and fastest mass-produced sedan in the world
  • Hagan looking forward to repeating his winning performance from this past weekend with new SRT Hellcat Redeye look in second Indianapolis event
  • Pruett gets back behind the wheel of her Mopar Challenger Drag Pak to compete in Factory Stock Showdown this weekend

July 16, 2020 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - The Mopar Dodge//SRT Funny Car of Matt Hagan and Mopar Dodge//SRT Top Fuel Dragster of Leah Pruett will be sporting new “Demon-possessed” SRT Hellcat Redeye paint schemes to battle the “dog days of summer” – traditionally associated with the start of a month of high heat, drought and adversity – that begin this weekend with the Lucas Oil National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Summernationals in Indianapolis. It is the second of two consecutive national events at Lucas Oil Raceway to restart the 2020 NHRA schedule after a four-month pause in competition.

The fierce-looking red-and-black paint schemes for the two Don Schumacher Racing (DSR) entries come on the heels of the early July public unveiling of the new 797-horsepower Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye, the most powerful and fastest mass-produced sedan in the world. With a top speed of 203 mph and quarter-mile elapsed time of 10.6 seconds at 129 mph, the 2021 Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye is designed and engineered to appeal to muscle car enthusiasts who want even more — more power, more performance and more bragging rights at the drag strip.

After driving away with bragging rights and a Wally trophy of his own by earning his first national event win of the season at this past Sunday’s E3 Spark Plugs NHRA Nationals, Hagan is looking forward to trying to repeat that performance aboard his new-look Mopar Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye this weekend.

"It's beautiful and those colors really pop and I think it's going to look great at 330 mph, so don't blink,” says Hagan, whose speed has earned him two No.1 qualifier awards this season to date. “It's one of those deals where Dodge has always come out with some awesome schemes, the coolest and fastest cars. I love that they really give me an opportunity to engage with the fans and the stuff they sell on the showroom floor. Dodge always comes out with some cool stuff and I'm excited for fans to see it because I love it. It's an amazing paint scheme.

“My Hellcat Redeye Funny Car might be faster and more fun to drive,” adds the two-time Funny Car world champion, “but when you have a production car that you can grab off the showroom floor and take it out there, that's pretty awesome. It's pure power. It's probably the closest you can get to what we're drag racing, having that raw power in the palms of your hands and underneath you."

Pruett is also looking forward to showing off the new Dodge//SRT Hellcat Redeye look on her DSR Top Fuel dragster.

"I'd like to say that I'm surprised how good it looks, but I've come to expect nothing but the remarkable from Dodge when it comes to showcasing their cars,” says Pruett. “They stand out on the racetrack and they stand out when it comes to how the cars look and how they perform. It makes me feel like when you've got a really nice dress and your dancing shoes on and you look hot-to-trot, then you go and have a good night out on the town.

“They've actually simplified that paint scheme into something that really pops with the chrome detail and that flat black is simple and refined,” says Pruett. “While I love my blue Mopar for how sleek and cool, like with a lot of o's cool it is, this Redeye is spicy hot."

After reaching the quarterfinals in the NHRA’s return to the drag strip last weekend, Pruett is also hoping to harness some of the energy she feels comes with the new Redeye look to maintain her top-five position in the Top Fuel point standings.

“This Redeye dragster is going to have a good weekend. I can just tell. There is an aura about it. The Redeye stands for ultimate power and it’s a way for us to be able to relate to those Redeye owners. It's a new version for us to highlight. We had the 1320 and the Demon and I personally have driven a couple of Redeyes and wish I had one of my own. I feel that we are going to not only look good but do well,” says Pruett.

The Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye-themed paint schemes will remain on the two DSR entries through the next two scheduled NHRA events, including the Dodge Mile-High Nationals at Bandimere Speedway near Denver, Colorado, on Aug. 7-9.

Pruett is also slated to get back behind the wheel of her Mopar Challenger Drag Pak this weekend to compete in the season debut of the rescheduled 2020 SamTech.edu NHRA Factory Stock Showdown.

While development of the new-generation Challenger Drag Pak continues, its release has been postponed to 2021 due to the challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. An on-track NHRA debut is now slated for next season. Despite the delay, Pruett is confident that the team can still make some gains through the eight scheduled events.

"Coming back to racing has brought some sense of normalcy back and getting back in the Drag Pak is one of my favorite places to be on earth,” says Pruett. “We were very much looking forward to debuting a new Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak this year, but even though we're not, we're still going to be out there entering, qualifying and competing and chasing down a Wally (trophy) with Mopar Dodge//SRT and making as much power as we can, while we can, in the circumstances that we can.”

Heading into the shortened two-day NHRA event, Jack Beckman leads the trio of Dodge Charger SRT Hellcats at the top of the Funny Car points standings that includes his DSR teammate Tommy Johnson Jr. and Hagan, each with a win this season. Ron Capps and his HEMI®-powered Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat sits sixth in points, but is working to change that this weekend at the only racetrack on the circuit at which he has never earned a Wally trophy.

In Top Fuel competition, Pruett will be joined again by Tony Schumacher and Cory McClenathan for the second of their two-event cameos. Schumacher is looking for his 85th Top Fuel event win as the NHRA’s most successful Top Fuel pilot of all time, while McClenathan is in the hunt for a 35th career victory, which would tie Mopar legend Don Garlits’ 35 NHRA wins.

Qualifying highlights will air on FOX Sports 1 at 7 p.m. Eastern on Saturday, July 18, while Sunday’s elimination rounds, including live action, will be broadcast on the FOX national broadcast network starting at noon Eastern.
