DETROIT - Chrysler LLC has invested about $500 million making 500 improvements to its vehicles during the last eight months of private ownership, chairman and CEO Robert Nardelli said Thursday.

The fixes -- to fits, finishes and engineering -- started soon after private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management of New York bought Chrysler last year, Nardelli said.

Ironically, some of the worst criticism of Chrysler's current product lineup was aimed at one of Chrysler's most successful new platform launches -- the Dodge Caliber, Jeep Patriot and Jeep Compass. Critics have trashed the quality of its interior plastics. But all three are selling well in both Canada and the U.S.

Improvements to the three Belvedere, Ill.-built crossovers has already begun, Klegon said. So have improvements to the ride quality of the 2009 Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Avenger. Sheet metal drivetrain tunnels and dash panels in each will be stiffened to reduce vibrations that were annoying customers.
