Alfa Romeo Debuts First F1 Car in Over 30 Years

Feb 20, 2018

The first Formula 1 car to bear the Alfa Romeo name in over 30 years has made its debut ahead of the 2018 F1 season.

The Alfa Romeo-Sauber C37 is the Switzerland-based outfit’s first challenger after it signed an Alfa Romeo branding deal late last year. That deal secured the latest Ferrari F1 engines for the team (it was using a 2016-spec Ferrari engine throughout the 2017 season) and also ensured its car would be flying Alfa’s red and white colors for the foreseeable future.

Observant readers may have noticed some major changes on this 2018-spec F1 car over last year’s cars. The biggest change is the addition of the ‘halo’ driver protection device, which is a new regulatory standard. The prominent ‘shark fin’ is also gone in favor of more subtle rear spine fitting. Sauber says the C37 should help it be more competitive than it was throughout 2018, and with a promising new rookie driver in the way of Charles Leclerc, things are looking up for the Swiss outfit.

“Our target ahead of 2018 is clear: We have to catch up with the field and continue improving our performance during the course of the season,” said team boss Fred Vasseur. “We have put lots of energy and commitment into the development of the C37. I want to thank our partners and fans for their continuous support. The return of Alfa Romeo to Formula 1 sets another milestone in the team’s history, and I am proud that such a historical brand has chosen us for their return to the sport. We are eager to start the 2018 season as the Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team.”

The 2018 F1 season will kick off with the first tests in Barcelona on February 26th.

Sauber and Alfa Romeo to Keep Fighting

Sauber and Alfa Romeo to Keep Fighting for Ambitious Results as Alfa Romeo Racing

February 1, 2019 , Turin, Italy -

The 2019 Formula One World Championship will see two of the most historical brands in motorsport – Sauber and Alfa Romeo – return to circuits across the globe with 2007 World Champion Kimi Räikkönen and the young Italian Antonio Giovinazzi driving for Alfa Romeo Racing, formerly referred to as the Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team.

Just one year after it was founded on June 24, 1910, Alfa Romeo made its debut in an official competition, winning the first Regularity Race in Modena. Since then, its sporting legend has been a string of victories and top-three finishes in many international championships, including Formula One. In 2019, the cars of Alfa Romeo Racing will sport the time-honored four-leaf clover emblem that since 1923 has identified the fastest Alfa Romeo models.

The long-term partnership between Sauber and Title Sponsor Alfa Romeo was initiated in 2018. Over the past year, the Team made continuous progress and finished the championship in eighth place. The term of the collaboration has been further extended, with the ownership and management of Sauber remaining unchanged and independent. As Alfa Romeo Racing, the goal continues to be the achievement of ambitious results at the pinnacle of motorsport.

Frédéric Vasseur, Team Principal Alfa Romeo Racing:
“It is a pleasure to announce that we will enter the 2019 Formula One World Championship with the Team name “Alfa Romeo Racing”. After initiating the collaboration with our Title Sponsor Alfa Romeo in 2018, our team made fantastic progress on the technical, commercial, and sporting side. This has given a boost of motivation to each team member, be that track-side or at the headquarter in Switzerland, as the hard work invested has become reflected in our results. We aim to continue developing every sector of our team while allowing our passion for racing, technology and design to drive us forward."

Mike Manley, CEO FCA:
“Alfa Romeo Racing is a new name with a long history in Formula One. We’re proud to collaborate with Sauber in bringing Alfa Romeo’s tradition of technical excellence and Italian panache to the pinnacle of motorsport. Make no mistake: with Kimi Räikkönen and Antonio Giovinazzi on one side of the pit wall and Alfa Romeo and Sauber expertise on the other, we are here to compete."

About Alfa Romeo Brand
Since its founding in Milan, Italy, in 1910, Alfa Romeo has designed and crafted some of the most stylish and exclusive cars in automotive history. That tradition lives on today as Alfa Romeo continues to take a unique and innovative approach to designing automobiles.

In every Alfa Romeo, technology and passion converge to produce a true work of art – every detail essential, every design the perfect harmony between beauty and purpose, engineering and emotion. Fully reviving Alfa Romeo’s spirit and maximizing its global appeal has been one of FCA’s priorities. Following a clear and well-defined strategy, Alfa Romeo is writing a new chapter in its more than century-long history that represents an extraordinary opportunity to realize the brand’s full potential. Today, Alfa Romeo is a true showcase of the Group’s best resources, talent and technological know-how. First with the Giulia, and more recently with the Stelvio, Alfa Romeo has created two models that capture the pure and original spirit of the brand – that instantly recognizable thoroughbred character. These models are testament to Alfa Romeo’s La meccanica delle emozioni spirit and quintessential examples of what people have come to expect from this prestigious brand. Alfa Romeo is winning the hearts of a new generation and retaking its rightful position as one of the world’s most desired premium brands. It is, once again, one of the leading symbols of Italian engineering and style, an icon of Italy’s technological excellence and creative spirit. After more than 30 years of absence from Formula One, the brand announced its return to the sport in 2018 as Title Sponsor of the Sauber F1 Team.

About Sauber Group of Companies
The Sauber Group of Companies is composed of three entities – Sauber Motorsport AG, which operates the Formula One team – Sauber Engineering AG, which focuses on prototype development and additive manufacturing – and Sauber Aerodynamik AG, which conducts full- and model-scale testing in the factory’s state-of-the-art wind tunnel and creates ground-breaking innovations in the field of aerodynamics. The companies collaborate closely to apply the expertise of over 450 dedicated individuals at the headquarter in Hinwil, Switzerland, to all internal and external projects.

Since its founding in 1970, the passion for racing has been at the heart of Sauber. For over 45 years, the innovative Swiss company has been setting standards in the design, development and construction of race cars for various championship series, such as Formula One, DTM, and WEC. Following its own Formula One debut in 1993, Sauber Motorsport AG has established one of the few traditional and privately held teams in the sport. After 25 years of competition in Formula One, the company launched a long-term partnership with Title Sponsor Alfa Romeo in 2018 and enters the 2019 championship under the Team name Alfa Romeo Racing.

Fiat looking at full takeover of Alfa Romeo Racing

Fiat looking at full takeover of Alfa Romeo Racing

2/5/2019

Fiat is potentially looking at a full takeover of the Alfa Romeo Racing team. Having already been renamed, the former Sauber team could undergo further changes in 2020.

The recent announcement that the Sauber name would no longer be on the grid in 2019 was a sad prospect to many but according to a report by AutoBild, there could be another motive behind the change.

If the report is accurate, Fiat's new CEO, John Elkeann has a clause in the contract with the team that gives him a purchase option which expires during the summer of 2019.

The New Alfa Romeo Racing C38

Save the Best for Last: the New Alfa Romeo Racing C38

February 18, 2019 , Turin, Italy -

Last, but not least. At 8:30 a.m. (Central European Standard Time), exactly 30 minutes before F1 cars took to the track for the first time in 2019, Alfa Romeo Racing presented the new Alfa Romeo Racing C38.

New name: The Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team became Alfa Romeo Racing. Structure, ownership and management stay the same, the name changes. Nice.

New drivers:
Kimi Räikkönen and Antonio Giovinazzi. Iceman and Giovi. Thanks to Title Sponsor Alfa Romeo, one (Kimi) is driving the Stelvio with the number 7, the other (Antonio) is driving the Giulia with number 99, paying homage to his earlier career.

New livery:
Already a stunner in 2018, this livery is even cooler and sexier, combining the classic colors of the traditional Sauber team – white and blue – with the iconic red symbolizing one of the most historical brands in racing, Alfa Romeo.

New sponsors: Our Comms office was nearly as busy as Zurich airport as press releases about new partners “departed” on an hourly basis.

New technical features: Team Principal Frédéric Vasseur and Technical Director Simone Resta don’t want us to go into any detail, but let’s say we used the winter months to get creative rather than skiing in the Swiss Alps.

We believe that’s enough exciting news for one day, but it’s fair to say that the team behind Alfa Romeo Racing looks forward to a new shot at proving their potential and scoring big in 2019.

Frédéric Vasseur, Team Principal Alfa Romeo Racing and CEO Sauber Motorsport AG:
“We are proud to present the Alfa Romeo Racing C38 – a car which is the result of the important work of each of member of our team, at our factory in Switzerland as well as at the track. The livery brings out last year’s features in a stronger and more edgy way. We are proud to display the logos of our partners, who have joined us in the scope of the expansion of our commercial activities, on these cars. I would like to thank everyone who has worked towards creating this car for their relentless enthusiasm for our team’s mission and our sport, and we look forward to continuing to make progress and fight for strong results in the upcoming championship.”

Simone Resta, Technical Director Alfa Romeo Racing:

“Since joining the team last year, I have seen progressive growth on all fronts and am very pleased to see the result of the hard work completed over the course of this winter, our 2019 Formula One contender, the new Alfa Romeo Racing C38. All departments have been collaborating well and the whole team has been pushing in the same direction. We have set ambitious targets for this season which brings along a significant change in regulations – mainly from an aerodynamic point of view. We have a great driver line-up and look forward to hearing their feedback in the next two weeks of testing ahead of the first Grand Prix in Melbourne.”

Kimi Räikkönen (car number 7):
“The car looks great. The livery design is nice. A lot of partners have joined to support this team which is a positive, and we thank them for believing in us. I look forward to getting on track now and learning more about the C38 during the next two weeks of testing.”

Antonio Giovinazzi (car number 99):
“I think it is a beautiful car – the design of the livery is great, very clean, and I like the colours a lot. It is my first own car in Formula One and it is something very special to me. We have many great sponsors who support us and we are very thankful for their confidence in our team. I really look forward to jumping into the C38 for the first time this week.”
