Fiat Officially Announce Details of the Facelifted Punto Evo

TURIN – August 31, 2009: The Fiat Punto Evo, the evolution of the Grande Punto, will make its debut at the next Frankfurt Motor Show. It aims to repeat the success of its predecessor and become the new pacesetter for innovation, safety and style, thanks to its many innovative features. The epithet “Evo” identifies a level of car design that is capable of satisfying even the most demanding customers in terms of technology, driving pleasure and respect for the environment.

The Punto Evo expresses its technical excellence first and foremost through a wide choice of Euro 5 engines, including a 1.3 second generation Multijet diesel and a 1.4 petrol engine with the revolutionary MultiAir technology developed by Fiat Powertrain Technologies and eventually to be incorporated in all Fiat Group engines. Fiat’s innovative and conventional powerplants are also joined by dual-fuel methane and petrol units to create the most complete and ecological range of engines in the segment. With reduced consumption and emissions in mind, the new Punto Evo also offers Start&Stop, the system that switches off and restarts the engine in stop-and-go traffic. Start&Stop is being introduced as standard on all Euro5 petrol and diesel engines. Another system making its first appearance on the Punto Evo is “Blue&Me–TomTom”, the new portable satellite navigation unit that lets you manage telephone, navigation and information functions on a practical colour touch-screen.

In the area of safety, the Punto Evo sets new standards thanks to 7 airbags, including a driver knee airbag. The Punto Evo is one of very few cars in its segment with a driver knee airbag fitted as standard on all versions. Other innovative safety systems are also available, including Hill-Holder to help with hill starts, adaptive 'cornering' front fog lights that switch on automatically with dipped headlights according to the angle of steering, and Fiat’s tried and tested ABS, EBD (Electronic Brake force Distribution) and ESP (Electronic Stability Program) systems.

Finally, the new Punto Evo is even more attractive thanks to the work of Fiat’s Centro Stile. The interiors (fascia, seats and instrumentation) have been completely renewed to become even more prestigious and elegant, and the outside has been given a thoroughly restyled look too. The Fiat Punto Evo goes on sale in the second half of October with the precise objective of consolidating its role as one of Europe’s market leaders in the highly important compact segment.

Technical innovation
The Punto Evo expresses its technical excellence first and foremost through a wide choice of engines Euro 5, including petrol units equipped with the revolutionary MultiAir system and second generation Multijet diesels. Developed and patented by FPT – Fiat Powertrain Technologies – MultiAir technology will gradually be adopted by all engines fitted to Fiat Group cars. The heart of MultiAir is a new electrohydraulic valve management system that reduces fuel consumption by controlling air directly via the inlet valves (without using the throttle). MultiAir reduces emissions (thanks to improved combustion control) and also improves performance by boosting both power and torque.

Similar results have been achieved in diesel versions thanks to the adoption of second generation Multijet units across the range. These engines incorporate new common rail injectors that, thanks to a balanced hydraulic servo-valve, control the quantity of fuel injected into the combustion chamber with improved precision, and in a faster and more flexible sequence than in the past. The choice of engines available for the Punto Evo is the most complete and ecological in this market segment, and even includes two alternative fuel engines, a methane and an LPG unit.

The new Punto Evo is even equipped with the latest version of the Blue&Me system. “Blue&Me–TomTom” is a fully integrated infotainment system that lets you manage telephone, navigation and information functions on a practical colour touch-screen. The system is the result of a partnership between Fiat Group Automobiles and TomTom, European leader in portable navigation systems, and integrates with the car’s other systems thanks to the Blue&Me system developed in conjunction with Magneti Marelli. The new system also incorporates “eco:Drive Info” for real time information on your driving style and useful suggestions for reducing environmental impact and optimising consumption by changing gear and using the accelerator to suit the nature of the route.

Respect for the environment
At Fiat, innovation means greater respect for the environment too. In fact, the environment is one of the main issues driving product development, and ensures that the Fiat range is the greenest in Europe. The Punto Evo is no exception to this rule. The new MultiAir engines prove the point. Compared to a conventional petrol engine of the same size, a MultiAir engine develops more power (up to 10%) and torque (up to 15%), while consuming significantly less (up to 10%) and emitting less CO2 (up to 10%), less particulates (up to 40%) and less NOx (up to 60%).

In the same way the second generation of Multijet diesel engines also offers more accurate combustion, with benefits for consumption, emissions, NVH and drivability. This has been achieved through a new common rail injector that modulates fuel injection into the combustion chamber and gives, for the Euro 5 engines, an improvement of around 2% in consumption and CO2 emissions on the homologation cycle, and a reduction in NOx emissions of up to 30%. Still with reduced consumption and emissions in mind, the new Punto Evo will also offer Start&Stop, the system that switches off the engine when you stop and restarts it for you to move off again (at traffic lights for example). Start&Stop will be standard on all Euro5 petrol and diesel engines.

The methane-fuelled engine is not only the most ecological dual fuel engine in segment B, producing only 115 g/km of CO2, but is also the most economical thanks to record running costs of under 4 Euros per 100 km. Among other advantages, methane-fuelled engines benefit from the highest government incentives in Italy: 5,000 Euros if combined with a contribution for scrapping your old car. Then there is the LPG-fuelled version, developed using Fiat’s longstanding experience in alternative fuels to respond to the extraordinary growth seen in this market. The Punto Evo GPL boasts record autonomy of 1,500 km in the extra-urban cycle, and running costs up to 50% lower than a petrol equivalent.

Safety
The Punto Evo is designed and built to achieve the highest levels of safety. The model boasts a large number of safety systems (standard or optional depending on market and version) starting from those dedicated to passive safety: 2 front airbags, 2 front side airbags, 2 window bags and a driver knee airbag (the Punto Evo is one of the few cars in this segment on which this device is standard on all versions). The Punto Evo is also one of the few cars in its class equipped with adaptive 'cornering' front fog lights that switch on automatically with dipped headlights according to the angle of steering. And don’t forget that the new Punto Evo also guarantees constant and reliable road holding thanks to electronic dynamic control systems for braking and steering. The ABS system that is available across the complete engine range incorporates EBD (Electronic Brake force Distribution), ESP (Electronic Stability Program) and Hill-holder to help with hill-starts.

Style and comfort
The Punto Evo is more stunning than ever thanks to the work of Fiat’s Centro Stile. In particular, the interiors of the new model have been completely redesigned to represent the most evolved expression of Italian style, with top quality materials and superb attention to detail. The result is a bright and elegant cabin with completely renewed fascia, seats, storage compartments and instrumentation. On the outside, both the front and the rear have been thoroughly restyled, as shown by the attractive lines of the new bumpers and the incorporation of innovative and original headlights and taillights. The latest design has also “stretched” the car to a total length of 406 centimetres, so that its winning characteristics of driver and passenger comfort remain unchanged. The other external dimensions remain the same, with a width of 169 cm, a height of 149 cm and a wheelbase of 251 cm.

The 33 Stradale
The 1967 33 Stradale is an iconic Alfa Romeo that made its public debut at the Monza circuit on August 31, 1967, on the eve of the 1967 Formula One Italian Grand Prix.

Italian for “road-going,” and boasting a top speed of 162 mph, the 33 Stradale was a hand-built Franco Scaglione-penned mid-engine exotic based on the Tipo 33 race car that won its class at the 1968 24 Hours of Daytona. To this day it represents a singular blend of leading-edge technology, racing mechanics and inspirational design, a fitting forebear to the 4C Spider. Only 18 chassis were ever produced, with most completed cars painted in Alfa’s signature red, with gray-gold wheels and black-and-tobacco interior.

Backed by 110 years of Alfa Romeo heritage, the 2021 Giulia and Stelvio feature more standard equipment and a simplified model lineup, including the return of the iconic Sprint nameplate. Both vehicles deliver seductive Italian styling, state-of-the-art technology and unsurpassed value, performance and driving dynamics.

“For the 2021 model year, the Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio receive significant lineup and content enhancements,” said Bob Broderdorf, Director of Alfa Romeo Sales - FCA North America. “A full array of technology available across the range, a new entry point and a streamlined lineup make it easier than ever to access Alfa Romeo’s legendary driving experience and striking Italian design. These are brand hallmarks that will be amplified in the upcoming PHEV Tonale, which will start production next year.

Crafted at the Cassino plant in Italy, the award-winning Giulia and Stelvio are testaments to Alfa Romeo’s superb balance of engineering and emotion.

Revised Model Lineups and Content Packages
Alfa Romeo has simplified the Giulia and Stelvio model lineups and restructured optional content packages, delivering more performance and value. Available in four trims for the 2021 model year, versus seven for the 2020 model year, the 2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio lineups include the Sprint, Ti, Ti Sport and Quadrifoglio. Further, with many popular options made standard, the number of available content packages has been significantly reduced, making it easier for customers to build their Alfa Romeo.

With its near-perfect 50/50 weight distribution, the Giulia sets the benchmark for performance sedans. Embodying Alfa Romeo’s la meccanica delle emozioni (the mechanics of emotion) spirit and offering race-inspired performance with class-leading, standard 280 horsepower and 306 lb.-ft. of torque, the Giulia delivers 0-60 mph in as quick as 5.1 seconds and a top speed of 149 mph. The Alfa Romeo Stelvio raises the bar for performance SUVs, bringing Giulia’s proven performance formula to the premium midsize utility segment. Named after one of the world’s greatest driving roads, the Stelvio Pass, the 2021 Stelvio delivers performance, design and technology in an SUV that only Alfa Romeo could create. The Stelvio lineup is a testament to Alfa Romeo’s perfect balance of engineering and emotion. Infused with Italian passion, artisanship and innovation, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio is designed for driving enthusiasts to conquer the road.

For 2021, four new exterior colors are available for Giulia and Stelvio:
  • Ocra GT Junior
  • Rosso GTA
  • Rosso Villa d'Este
  • Verde Montreal
Return of the Sprint
Harkening back to the Bertone-designed 1954 Giulietta Sprint, the first Sprint nameplate to appear on an Alfa Romeo, and to the 1965 Giulia Sprint GTA, arguably the most recognized example of the nameplate, the Sprint name holds a rich and longstanding history for the brand, making this a fitting return on the 2021 Giulia and Stelvio.

As entry points to their lineups, the 2021 Giulia Sprint and 2021 Stelvio Sprint offer class-leading levels of standard equipment unmatched by competitors from Europe and Asia. The Sprint trims’ long list of standard equipment includes a 280-horsepower turbocharged engine, 8-speed automatic transmission, bi-xenon headlamps, Brembo front brakes, leather seating, 10-way power front seats, remote start, keyless entry, 8.8-inch multi-touch display, Forward Collision Warning with Full-Speed Stop, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and SiriusXM radio. A premium leather-wrapped shifter and a race-inspired steering wheel for all Sprint trims feature Alfa Romeo’s characteristic steering-wheel-mounted push-button start. Standard laminated glass helps improve both cabin ambience and the overall driving experience.

Sprint trims can be equipped with Alfa Q4 AWD system, as well as new content packages, including a Performance Package (limited-slip differential, steering-column-mounted aluminum paddle shifters), Sun & Sound Package (dual-pane sunroof, 10-speaker audio) and Active Assist I Package, which features Active Blind-spot Assist, automatic-dimming exterior mirrors, Front and Rear Park Assist sensors, adaptive cruise control with full-speed stop and go, automatic high-beam headlamp control and Lane Departure Warning. The Active Assist I Package combines two packages from 2020 into one and represents a 70% price reduction.

Ti and Ti Sport Add Key Standard Equipment
New for 2021, standard equipment on the Giulia Ti and Stelvio Ti includes a dual-pane sunroof and an 8.8-inch multi-touch display with HD radio and navigation.

For Giulia Ti Sport and Stelvio Ti Sport, the equipment list is further enhanced for 2021, with standard limited-slip differential and dark exhaust. Stelvio Ti Sport also adds a standard sport rear diffuser and 20-inch 5-hole aluminum wheels. New 21-inch 5-hole aluminum wheels are optional on Stelvio Ti and Stelvio Ti Sport.

Customers can now select from new content packages, including a Lusso Package (Ti) and Carbon Package (Ti Sport). With build-complexity reduced by more than 90%, customers gain a clearer view of their desired model and options, realizing lower year-over-year prices.

Quadrifoglio = Halo
Alfa Romeo continues to offer the Giulia Quadrifoglio and Stelvio Quadrifoglio as the “halo” vehicles for the brand. The storied nameplate highlights Alfa Romeo’s motorsports expertise with best-in-class, 505-horsepower, 2.9-liter, twin-turbocharged V-6 engine, capable of launching the Giulia Quadrifoglio from 0-60 mph in 3.8 seconds and the all-wheel-drive Stelvio Quadrifoglio from 0-60 mph in just 3.6 seconds. Plus, the Giulia Quadrifoglio set a Nürburgring record lap time of 7:32, the fastest ever by a five-passenger production sedan, while the Stelvio Quadrifoglio recorded a lap time of 7:51.7, a staggering feat for a five-seat premium SUV.

As Alfa Romeo’s ultimate performance iterations, the Giulia Quadrifoglio and Stelvio Quadrifoglio come standard with dynamic dual-mode quad exhaust, Brembo high-performance brakes, torque-vectoring rear differential, independent adaptive damping suspension, leather/Alcantara sport seats, genuine carbon fiber interior trim and Alfa DNA Pro Drive Mode Selector with Race Mode. For 2021, the Stelvio Quadrifoglio can be equipped with optional 21-inch 5-hole aluminum wheels in dark or silver finish.

Premium Interiors and Technology
Inside every 2021 Giulia and Stelvio lies a refined center console featuring a machine-knurled aluminum-look rotary dial, premium knob materials and ample storage capacity. An Italian flag badge at the base of the shifter signifies the country from which these vehicles were born, designed and crafted. Large cup holders in the Giulia, plus a phone storage area with available wireless charging, round out the upscale environment.

A standard 8.8-inch center touchscreen display offers a selection of interactive widgets and a horizontal scroll layout, which provides additional personalization options and enhanced interactivity and visibility. Performance pages allow drivers to track key performance metrics while digital HVAC and other controls enhance functionality. Drivers and passengers can customize the home page by selecting their tailored layout. Reconfigurable widgets provide quick and easy access to key functions, such as radio, media, smartphone, navigation, climate control and more.

The standard 7-inch thin-film transistor (TFT) instrument cluster screen displays information in an easy-to-read format, incorporating Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) and level II autonomous driving functions. Alfa Romeo's future in F1 in doubt - report

01/17/2021

The future of the Alfa Romeo brand in Formula 1 depends on forthcoming decisions at the boardroom level, according to Italy's La Gazzetta dello Sport.
Respected correspondent Luigi Perna is questioning the future of the Italian brand's naming partnership with Sauber in the wake of the Fiat-Peugeot merger.
The new carmaker giant will be called Stellantis, uniting Fiat Chrysler brands including Alfa Romeo with Peugeot names like Citroen, Opel and Vauxhall.

"In the plans of the new global auto giant, which will arise from the merger between FCA and PSA, there will also be a redefining of the sporting activities of the group's brands," Perna wrote.
"It will start with the Biscione, which has been a sponsor of the Sauber-Ferrari team since 2018," he added, referring to Alfa Romeo's iconic logo.

"Whether the historic brand stays in Formula 1 will depend on the new industrial plans deriving from the merger that was announced on January 4 after more than a year of negotiations."

Team drivers Kimi Räikkönen and Antonio Giovinazzi and reserve driver Robert Kubica entered the stage as the C41, in a striking new livery, was shown for the first time.

Featuring a new color scheme designed by Alfa Romeo’s Centro Stile and featuring the now traditional red and white colors of the team, the car, designed under the coordination of Technical Director Jan Monchaux, represents an evolution of the C39 that competed in the 2020 season. Owing to the restrictions imposed by the regulations, the car carries over many of the components of its predecessor, while still standing out with its renewed appearance, in particular in regard to the nosecone, an area on which the team chose to focus its development tokens. Under the bodywork lies a new Ferrari engine, ready to rev in less than a week when the team embarks on a new season with the C41’s shakedown in Barcelona on Friday.

The Alfa Romeo logo is flanked by the Quadrifoglio (four-leaf clover) traditionally associated with Alfa Romeo’s racing efforts, and the logo of Autodelta, the brand’s legendary racing team. These logos adorn the bodywork, contributing to the creation of one of the standout cars on the grid – a classic design that embodies the passion and tradition of the marques it represents.

Alfa Romeo once again partners with Sauber Motorsport for the 2021 Formula One World Championship. The partnership between two of the most recognized brands in motorsport started in 2018, when Alfa Romeo joined the team as title sponsor. In the three years of operative collaboration so far, the team has achieved important results. True to its long-lasting spirit of competitiveness, Alfa Romeo takes on the challenge once more.

Alfa Romeo and Sauber Group partnership extends beyond racing. The collaboration, both technical and commercial, allows Sauber Engineering’s technical expertise to be transferred to Alfa Romeo road car production. In particular, the Giulia GTA project benefits from this long-standing partnership, leveraging the technical know-how of Sauber AG Engineering and Aerodynamics divisions. Alfa Romeo entrusted Sauber Engineering with the production of most of the carbon components in the GTA and GTAm, especially those with aerodynamic impact.

Frédéric Vasseur, Team Principal Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN and CEO Sauber Motorsport AG: “The launch of a new car is always an emotional moment, the culmination of months of effort from everyone back at the factory and the start of a new adventure. I think the philosophy upon which the team is based remains the same - we have to do a better job tomorrow than we are doing today. We finished last season in P8, so we have to target a better result in 2021. To do so, we have to keep improving in each department, trackside and back at HQ. Every team on the grid has very high expectations right now: all the teams expect to do a good job in the winter and to be in a good position for the first race, but soon it will be the time for everyone to show their cards.”

Jan Monchaux, Technical Director Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN: “The C41 is the result of a very unusual situation in Formula One, in which the regulations have made us unable to develop an entire new car for this year. For this reason, our 2021 car shares a lot of common parts with the C39, with the exception of those which the regulations forced us to change – such as the floor – and the nosecone, in which we invested our two development tokens. This means we will know the car much better than usual when we get to testing, but it’s still going to be crucial to make the most of those three days to verify that reality matches our expectations and to get to know the new tires. We are ready for the new season and we can’t wait to see our new car on track.”

Alfa Romeo's Latest Announcement Is Sad News

04/23/2021

But the brand is far from dead.

Not so long ago we were unsure about Alfa Romeo's future. Sales of the Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio have not met expectations even though both are excellent vehicles, especially the 505-horsepower Quadrifoglio variants. Aside from sharing a Ferrari-derived 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6, both ride on the same rear-wheel-drive Giorgio platform. The Giulia was the first to make use of this architecture, launched when Sergio Marchionne was leading Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), now Stellantis along with the PSA Groupe. Very sadly, the Giorgio setup is being retired.
Automotive News Europe reports Alfa Romeo's new CEO, Jean Philippe Imparato, has confirmed the platform's demise as the iconic marque will switch to the "STLA Large" architecture. All future Stellantis brand vehicles are set to soon switch to four different STLA platform sizes: Small, Medium, Large, and Frame.

The latter is for high-riding vehicles like trucks and large SUVs. All four will be electrified and two are pure battery electrics. STLA Large will likely be a plug-in hybrid setup. STLA Medium will be the first to arrive in 2023, so the Giulia and Stelvio are not going anywhere just yet. Remember, the Giorgio platform was designed at a time when Marchionne wanted to turn Alfa into a serious BMW-fighting luxury brand. It came awfully close.
The Giulia QV often came out the winner in direct matchups against the previous generation BMW M3, the longtime high-performance luxury sedan benchmark. Marchionne also wanted to see the flexible and AWD capable Giorgio setup to serve as the basis for additional FCA vehicles.

In theory, this was a good idea but the architecture proved to be too expensive for other brands like Dodge and Chrysler. Alfa Romeo alone couldn't generate enough volume to achieve sufficient economies of scale to help recoup development costs. In 2019, FCA was forced to write off its over 800 million euro investment on the platform.
In related Alfa news, Imparato confirmed the delayed launch of the new Tonale small luxury crossover in order to improve things like range and performance. He also said a smaller crossover slotted below the Tonale, possibly named Brennero, is the STLA-based model that'll debut first in 2023.

Alfa Romeo and Sauber Motorsport Extend Partnership
  • Alfa Romeo and Sauber Motorsport will continue to join forces at the highest level of motorsports with multi-year partnership extension

July 14, 2021 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - Alfa Romeo and Sauber Motorsport extend their partnership on a multi-year agreement. The renewal of this relationship represents an exciting new chapter in the long and prestigious motorsports history of two brands with an impressive racing heritage that includes success in Formula One, sports cars and touring cars.

Formula One is the ultimate laboratory and therefore a vital test bed for Alfa Romeo on its path to electrification. In addition, it is a crucial global marketing platform. The partnership has set ambitious objectives for progressive improvement and will allow the two parties to develop their vision for the future, enabling Sauber Motorsport and Alfa Romeo to work on growing their success both on and off the track. Alfa Romeo’s presence in motorsports, and particularly in Formula One, will continue to play a key role in shaping the future of the brand, as it has since 1910.

The partnership with Sauber will drive vehicle developments that Alfa Romeo will continue to transfer to production cars. This tech transfer has already proven that the benefits of this partnership are well beyond the confines of the race track, such as the development of the Giulia GTA and GTAm, the latest performance sedans by Alfa Romeo.

Since its return to the sport in 2018, Alfa Romeo has developed new and exciting driving talent, such as Charles Leclerc and Antonio Giovinazzi, while bringing onboard an iconic name and former Formula One champion Kimi Räikkönen. The significant regulation changes Formula One will undergo in 2022 constitute an opportunity for the team to make a substantial step forward, given the lean and agile set up and the new budget cap environment that began in 2021.

“As a historic Italian automotive brand, Alfa Romeo was born on the racetrack," said Jean-Philippe Imparato, CEO Alfa Romeo. "Today, we are proud to continue honoring that racing DNA by placing it at the heart of the future of our brand. We are driven by passion and excellence. Formula One represents a cutting-edge laboratory for the future electrification of our range, fully coherent with our vision for the coming years. Furthermore, motorsports brings the incomparable global exposure we wish to leverage for a successful future.”

“We are delighted to announce the extension of this partnership," said Frédéric Vasseur, team principal Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN and CEO Sauber Motorsport AG. "Alfa Romeo has been an incredible companion over the last few years, and we are even more excited about the chapters that are yet to come. The new regulations give us the chance to take another step forward and I firmly believe we are perfectly positioned to make big gains together. We look forward to our future together and to keeping moving toward the front of the grid.

"This relationship is also very important for our company as a whole, beyond the track. The work we have done in the automotive world has shown the extent of the technology and manufacturing skills of Sauber Engineering and we are confident we can continue working for Alfa Romeo on new and exciting projects that will shape the future of the car industry,” added Vasseur.

Valtteri Bottas Joins Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN in Multi-year Deal

September 7, 2021 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - Formula One driver Valtteri Bottas will join Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN for the 2022 season and beyond. The Finnish star signed a multi-year deal with the Hinwil-based team. Bottas, a nine-time Grand Prix winner, joins the team as it transitions to the new era of Formula One, with sweeping regulation changes providing a unique opportunity to move toward the front of the grid.

Nine career wins, 17 pole positions and 63 podiums are a strong introduction for Bottas, including World Championship runner-up in 2019 and 2020. Joining Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN will allow Bottas to put his experience at the competitive end of Formula One as he helps the team move up the rankings. With new regulations in the sport, the opportunity is there for team and driver to write a new, successful story together.

Born in Nastola, Finland, on August 28, 1989, Bottas had a distinguished career in the junior formulas, becoming only the second driver to win both the Formula Renault Eurocup and the Formula Renault Northern European Cup in the same year, in 2008, and following this by winning the Masters of Formula 3 in both 2009 and 2010 – the first to achieve this double-triumph accomplishment. A promotion to the GP3 Series saw Bottas win four races and claim the title, demonstrating his readiness for the biggest stage of motorsports.

Bottas’ debut in Formula One duly took place in 2013 with Williams Racing, where he emerged as one of the brightest talents in the sport, before a promotion to Mercedes for 2017. There, Bottas would play a crucial role in securing four constructors’ titles, winning his first race in Sochi in 2017 and adding eight more victories to his tally, alongside a total of 54 podiums.

Valtteri Bottas, driver: “A new chapter in my racing career is opening. I’m excited to join Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN for 2022 and beyond for what is going to be a new challenge with an iconic manufacturer. Alfa Romeo is a brand that needs no introduction, they have written some great pages of Formula One history and it’s going to be an honor to represent this marque. The potential of the setup in Hinwil is clear and I am relishing the opportunity to help lead the team forward up the grid, especially with the new regulations in 2022 giving the team a chance to make a leap in performance. I’m grateful for the trust the team has put in me and I cannot wait to repay their faith. I’m as hungry as ever to race for results and, when the time comes, for wins. I know Fred [Vasseur] well and I am looking forward to getting to know the rest of the team I am going to work with, building relationships as strong as the ones I have at Mercedes. I am proud of what I have achieved in Brackley and I am fully focused on finishing the job as we fight for another world championship, but I am also looking forward to the new challenges that await me next year.”

Jean Philippe Imparato, CEO, Alfa Romeo: "We are excited to welcome such an experienced driver as Valtteri Bottas to the big Alfa Romeo community. The values of efficiency, stability and performance that Alfa Romeo is redefining for its own future are perfectly embodied by a driver like Valtteri, together with whom we hope to write new chapters of a glorious sporting history."

Frédéric Vasseur, Team Principal of Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN: “It is a pleasure to welcome Valtteri to the team and we are looking forward to our journey together. With him, we bring to Hinwil a strong team player with experience at the sharp end of the grid. Valtteri has been an integral part of a team that rewrote the history books and he has four constructors’ world titles to his name. He is the right driver to help Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN make a step forward toward the front of the grid. Our relationship goes back a long way, to when we worked together in successful campaigns in F3 and GP3, and his talent and skills have been evident ever since, only growing with the time. I’m really looking forward to seeing him put his ability to work for the good of the team. The multi-year deal bringing him to us gives both Valtteri and the team the stability we need to build our project at a crucial time for Formula One. We are excited for what the future holds.”

Alfa Romeo to launch new model every year to 2026; Lancia to expand beyond Italy

Bosses of the two brands outlined future plans to dealers.

Alfa Tonale motorinotizie

The compact Tonale, shown, will be positioned below Alfa Romeo's Stelvio midsize SUV.

MILAN -- Alfa Romeo will introduce a new model each year to 2026, starting with the Tonale SUV next year, the brand's CEO, Jean-Philippe Imparato, said.

"Alfa Romeo will launch a new model every year until 2026," Imparato told an Italian dealer's event on Wednesday.

His comments were later confirmed by a Stellantis spokesman.
Starting in 2027, all Alfa Romeo new vehicles would be electric, Imparato said.

The Tonale, whose production was initially expected to start by the end of 2021, will be presented in March next year, with sales in Italy to begin in June, Imparato said.

Lancia plan
Lancia's head, Luca Napolitano, told the same event that he had presented Stellantis CEO Carlo Tavares with a 10-year plan for the brand, which is selling only one model, the Ypsilon small car, and only in Italy.
The strategy aims to expand the brand to other European markets, including France, Germany and Nordic countries, with a focus on large cities, to complete the group's premium offer from Alfa Romeo and DS, Napolitano said.

"Our target is to bring Lancia to those markets where electric cars are sold, as we will produce electric cars only from 2026," he told dealers in comments later confirmed by a Stellantis spokesman.

"I want to be in the high end of the market, not abandoning Ypsilon, but pushing Lancia beyond it," Napolitano said, adding that the brand will launch three new models by 2028.

Stellantis was formed earlier this year through the merger of Fiat Chrysler and PSA Group. Stellantis has pooled Alfa Romeo, Lancia and DS to cooperate in the premium market.

Alfa Romeo Introduces 'Near Life Experience' Global Advertising Campaign at the Formula 1 U.S. Grand Prix

    • Alfa Romeo presents the first global advertising campaign, “Near Life Experience,” at the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, on Sunday, October 24
    • Campaign launches across Alfa Romeo social media channels on Friday, October 22

October 22, 2021 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - Alfa Romeo is introducing its first global advertising campaign, “Near Life Experience,” at the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, on Sunday, October 24. “Near Life Experience” will premiere in the United States with a multichannel campaign that will start on Alfa Romeo brand's social media channels beginning this Friday, October 22 and will launch worldwide later this year. “Near Life Experience” can be viewed here.

"The significance of launching our 'Near Life Experience' campaign for Alfa Romeo during this weekend's U.S. Grand Prix is by design," said Olivier Francois, global chief marketing officer, Stellantis. "It pays tribute to the brand's rich racing heritage that goes back as early as 1910 and to the start of Formula 1 in 1950, when Alfa Romeo was not only present, we were champions the first year, taking first place with Giuseppe Farina and the Alfetta 158. 'Near Life Experience" honors a rich automotive pedigree that continues to evolve and delivers on its exceptional promise to Alfa Romeo drivers on the road every day."

The “Near Life Experience” campaign interprets new values and the ambition of Alfa Romeo, yet reminds “Alfistas” that Alfa Romeo vehicles are designed with a premium placed on both driving and emotion. Driving an Alfa Romeo is a uniquely emotional experience that makes the driver feel something extraordinary, delivering a profound experience for the senses. It’s the culmination of all the feelings, emotions and sights, coming together to form a moment as close to perfect as humanly possible.

“For Alfa Romeo, the 'Near Life Experience' campaign is a very big step toward its future as a premium global brand," said Jean-Phillippe Imparato, chief executive officer, Alfa Romeo. "While remaining true to the brand’s DNA, the epitome of Italian noble sportiness since 1910, this video speaks of its daring attitude and its unique ability to provide its customers with a visceral experience. This is the first time we’re using a single language all over the world, a direct message to everyone who shares Alfa Romeo's values."

As part of the campaign, Alfa Romeo is also introducing the #AlfaRomeoExperience hashtag, giving Alfistas the opportunity to share their own near-life experiences across the brand’s social media channels.

This campaign was developed by TRG (The Richards Group), an independent agency in Dallas, and directed by Salomon Ligthelm. The director of photography, Daniel Bouquet, previously worked on "Sound of Metal," which was nominated for a 2021 Academy® Award. The soundtrack consists of Flavio Ibba's arrangement of Vltava (The Moldau) from Smetana’s Má vlast (My Country).

The Alfa Romeo F1 team announced today it has signed 22-year old Formula 2 driver Guanyu Zhou to drive alongside veteran Valtteri Bottas for the 2022 season, replacing Antonio Giovinazzi. Zhou will make history as China's first-ever full-time Formula 1 driver.
Zhou, who currently sits second place in contention for the Formula 2 title, is currently also a test driver for Alpine, meaning he's had extensive test time in older F1 cars. According to the official F1 website, he's been linked to a drive at Alfa for several months now.
“I dreamt from a young age of climbing as high as I can in a sport that I am passionate about and now the dream has come true," Zhou said in a statement. "It is a privilege for me to start my Formula 1 career with an iconic team, a team that has introduced so much young talent into Formula 1 in the past. Now the dream is reality."

With 42-year old Kimi Räikkönen finally retiring at the end of this season and Mercedes driver Bottas taking his place, Zhou's addition will mean a totally new lineup for Alfa Romeo going into the 2022 season, right as the new regulations kick in. Exciting stuff.

Alfa Romeo F1 driver Antonio Giovinazzi's parting shot to Formula 1 is not exactly a friendly good-bye.
Giovinazzi found himself to be the latest young talent to fall victim to a "ruthless" sport driven by the influence of money.

The 27-year-old Ferrari-backed Italian has been dropped by Alfa Romeo for 2022, with the Swiss-based team opting instead to sign the well-financed Chinese rookie Guanyu Zhou. The other candidates for the seat, Formula 2 stars Callum Ilott and Oscar Piastri, are making other plans for 2022.

Ilott, like Giovinazzi a Ferrari Academy product, will race in IndyCar full time for Juncos Hollinger Racing next year rather than remain a Ferrari and Alfa Romeo reserve. Ilott said there is "no point watching other people drive around for another year."
Australian Piastri, meanwhile, will be Alpine's 2022 reserve in Formula 1. Giovinazzi is heading to Formula E.

"Formula 1 is emotion, talent, risk and speed. But when money rules, it is also ruthless," Giovinazzi, who will drive for Penske in Formula E next year, said on social media in Italian.

As for Zhou, who is reportedly backed by as much as $30 million in Chinese sponsorship, the deal involves the 22-year-old Formula 2 racer stepping away from the Alpine development program.
Alfa Romeo team boss Frederic Vasseur told Auto Motor und Sport in regards to the Zhou signing, "It is a great opportunity for us as a team, for the company, for the sponsors, for Formula 1 in general to open up a completely new market in China."
As for Giovinazzi, who is subsequently leaving F1, Vasseur insisted that it's "not his fault for sure" that he is losing the seat.
Giovinazzi has made 59 career starts in Formula 1. He's yet to reach a podium. Giovinazzi's best finish this year is 11th on four different occasions.
"The beginning of the collaboration was a bit difficult, but we have kept him in the team during these seasons and in the end his level of performance has been good," Vasseur said. "The choice we have made is due to a combination of factors—it's not just about him. Sometimes we perhaps expected something better, but that goes for everyone—for the team, for the drivers, for everyone else too."
