Jeep® Gladiator Rubicon Named FOUR WHEELER “2020 Pickup Truck of the Year”
  • Jeep® Gladiator Rubicon earns award in its debut year from leading off-road publication
  • FOUR WHEELER judges evaluated new models from several manufacturers to determine the Jeep Gladiator as "2020 Pickup Truck of the Year"
  • Jeep becomes first brand to win both “SUV of the Year” and “Pickup Truck of the Year” FOUR WHEELER awards

January 16, 2020 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - The 2020 Jeep® Gladiator Rubicon – the most capable midsize truck ever – has been named FOUR WHEELER “2020 Pickup of the Year.” The award is given annually by the editors of the opinion-leading off-road enthusiast publication.

“The new Jeep Gladiator is the truck many buyers have been waiting years for,” said FOUR WHEELER Editor Ken Brubaker. “After a week of testing in a variety of challenging environments, the Gladiator proved that it is all truck and all Jeep, which is a formidable combination. Mix in the impressive Rubicon package that includes Tru-Lok differential lockers, Rock-Trac transfer case with 4:1 low range, front disconnecting stabilizer bar and full skidplating, and it’s clear the Gladiator is at the front of the class.”

Over the course of a week, FOUR WHEELER’s judges conducted a variety of tests spanning more than 1,000 miles of varied terrain that included pavement, gravel, dirt, sand, rocks, mud and snow. A loose-dirt hillclimb and water crossings were included in testing as well. Night driving was also integrated into the competition to gauge each vehicle’s lighting equipment. Judges included staff from various 4x4 media brands, including FOUR WHEELER, 4-WHEEL & OFF-ROAD, and JP MAGAZINE.

“When the Gladiator was first announced, there was concern that it would be too much truck and not enough Jeep, or too much Jeep and not enough truck,” said MOTORTREND GROUP Content Director Sean P. Holman. “If anything, our testing has proven that Jeep has hit the sweet spot with the Gladiator, giving customers one of the finest off-road-capable midsize trucks on the market.”

FOUR WHEELER’s Pickup Truck of the Year award event – now in its 31st consecutive year – is an invitation-only competition that is only open to all-new or significantly revised pickup trucks for the upcoming model year.

“Our all-new Gladiator Rubicon is the world’s only truck that delivers legendary Jeep 4x4 off-road capability, open-air freedom and authentic Jeep design,” said Jim Morrison, Head of Jeep Brand – FCA North America. “The Gladiator is 100 percent Jeep and 100 percent truck – the perfect combination of rugged utility, versatility and functionality that our loyal Jeep customers have been asking for.”

The Fast Lane Truck (TFLtruck) Names 2020 Jeep® Gladiator, 2020 Ram Power Wagon Winners of Gold Winch Award
  • 2020 Jeep® Gladiator Rubicon wins Gold Winch award for Best Mid-size Off-Road truck in its first attempt
  • 2020 Ram Power Wagon takes home Gold Winch award for Best Heavy Duty Off-Road truck
  • FCA is home to the most off-road-capable pickup trucks in the industry

April 16, 2020 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - The Fast Lane Truck (TFLtruck) has named two FCA vehicles as winners of the 2020 Gold Winch awards.

The 2020 Jeep® Gladiator has earned the Gold Winch award as the Best Mid-size Off-Road truck of the year. The 2020 Ram Power Wagon has earned the Gold Winch award as the Best Heavy Duty Off-Road truck of the year.

"The competition was very tough this year. In the end, the Jeep Gladiator Rubicon stood above the rest based on its raw off-road capability and the fun aspect of top-down doors-off adventure driving. The final decision was unanimous,” said Andre Smirnov, managing editor at TFLtruck.com.” The Ram Power Wagon won the 2020 Gold Winch award due to its laser focus on off-road capability and equipment. It still has the best suspension flex, many trim options and an included winch to boot.”

For Gold Winch evaluations, TFLtruck’s editors tested vehicles on grueling paths in Colorado, reaching high elevations with terrain that varies from loose gravel to rocks and snow. Jeep Gladiator Rubicon’s overall performance on-road combined with its legendary capability and open-air freedom unanimously won judges over.

Judges noted the Ram Power Wagon’s off-road capability and equipment, such as the unique suspension, 2-inch factory lift, locking front and rear differentials, disconnecting front sway bar and a 12,000 lb. winch, put it over the top of its respective category. After all votes were counted, the 2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon and 2020 Ram Power Wagon were determined to be the winners of each respective segment.

Gold Winch award-eligible trucks include 2020 model-year pickups (or trucks from previous model years that have not significantly changed for 2020). Trucks are only eligible for the award if they were tested before March 1, 2020.

About TFLtruck
TFLtruck is the most popular online video reviews, news and views publication. Millions of truck buyers watch TFLtruck video reviews and tests every month. This includes the signature "TFL Ike Gauntlet" extreme towing test, which challenges trucks to the absolute maximum of their performance capability. Simply put — TFLtruck is All Trucks All The Time.

The Jeep Gladiator pickup has a bunch of Easter eggs hidden throughout the car. We spotted seven of them.
June 17, 2020,

2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon.

  • The Gladiator is Jeep's version of a mid-size, off-road-capable pickup truck.
  • It has a bunch of fun Easter eggs hidden all over it, including some vintage-inspired ones that nod to Jeep's WWII past.
  • I found seven in total on the Gladiator Rubicon I reviewed.
It's not hard to imagine how Jeep has built up a bit of a cult following over the years.
Jeeps are blocky, lovable things, full of charisma in both their talents and imperfections.
Whether or not you like them, you have an opinion about them. They make you feel things, which is more than I can say about most of the anonymous lumps of metal driving around on US roads these days.

Jeep knows this, which is why it has a habit of putting Easter eggs in its cars — special, hidden details sure to delight its customers. The Jeep Renegade has them and so does the Jeep Gladiator.

During my many days spent with the 2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon mid-size pickup truck I found seven Easter eggs. There might very well be more! But I think I was pretty thorough.

Here they are.

1. The Willys MB drawing on all four of the truck's wheels.
2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon.

The Gladiator Rubicon comes with a set of 17-inch polished black aluminum wheels. If you look carefully, these wheels have a little red drawing of a Willys MB on them.
The Willys MB was built as a light military utility vehicle with off-roading abilities. It was manufactured for and used by the Allied Forces in World War II from 1941 to 1945. George C. Marshall, World War II Army Chief of Staff General, called it "America's greatest contribution to modern warfare."

By the time the war ended, the Willys was so popular and successful that over 650,000 of them had been produced.

2. The "419" stamped into the left side of the bed.
2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon.

If you look to the left of the Gladiator's bed, you'll see a subtle stamp: a heart and the number 419. People familiar with the region will recognize this as the Toledo, Ohio, area code. It's where Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has its sprawling, 312-acre Toledo Complex, which is where the Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator are currently built.

3. The pictures of two-door Jeep Wranglers on the climate system.
2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon.

I've actually never seen this on any of the cars I've test-driven: an outline of a specific car on the climate system, rather than just a universal, anonymous, and vaguely automotive shape. Obviously, a Jeep Wrangler has a very distinctive and iconic shape, so why not make that the image on the air recirculation button?

4. Another Willys MB etching on the windshield.
2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon.

On the lower left-hand corner of the windshield, you'll see another etching of the Willys MB. It's positioned so that it looks like it's about to climb up the edge of the glass. It's freaking adorable.

5. Flip-flops on the passenger-side windshield cowl.
2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon.

If you look carefully on the passenger-side windshield cowl, you'll see a little etching of a pair of flip-flops. Allegedly, this Easter egg is a nod to a longtime Jeep fan and veteran car journalist, Rick Péwé.

Péwé made an appearance in this The Fast Lane Car video from September 2018. When asked about the flip-flop etching on the Jeep, Péwé held out one of his open-toed-sandaled feet as an explanation. "Yeah, that's why," he laughed. Péwé is known for his love of open-toed footwear.

Over the years, he's "given Jeep a lot of input on design and function," he said.

6. The Willys appearing again in the gauge cluster.
2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon.

This one, admittedly, I would not have found had The Transmission not first pointed it out: the Willys shows up in the gauge cluster when you cycle through to the Trip Info screen. There, you'll see an Army-green war Jeep that looks as though it's ready to storm the beaches of Normandy.

7. The steering wheel design.
2020 Jeep Gladiator.

Also spotted by The Transmission, you'll notice the Gladiator's steering wheel wears a circle around the Jeep logo with a peculiar three-pronged design. "The company's marketing team informed us that it's a nod to the original 1940s-era steering wheel, which was a three-spoke design," the outlet reported.

Next time you find yourself in or near a Jeep Gladiator, be sure to look out for these Easter eggs.

Jeep® Brand Gives Owners, Fans and Followers the Opportunity to Create the Next 'Easter Egg'
  • For the first time, the Jeep® brand is giving owners, fans and followers the opportunity to create the next “Easter egg” to hide on a future Jeep model, along with the ultimate chance to win a new Jeep vehicle
  • Contest runs now through Thursday, July 2
  • Ideas can be submitted at TheNextJeepEasterEgg.com
  • Judging panel includes Jeep brand executives and designers
  • Winner to be announced on Friday, July 31
  • Jeep "Easter eggs,” often speaking to the brand’s nearly 80-year history and legendary off-road DNA, have long been hidden on vehicles
  • Jeep brand to give one fan the chance to become a part of its storied legacy

June 18, 2020 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - From hidden Jeep® grilles to the three digits “419” or a 1941 Jeep Willys driving up a mountain, Jeep owners, fans and followers around the world are discovering the “Easter eggs” hidden on their vehicles, then posting their finds on social media. Now, the Jeep brand is giving its community the opportunity to invent what the next “Easter egg” should be for a chance to have it hidden on a future Jeep model. Ideas can be submitted at TheNextJeepEasterEgg.com.

The person with the selected idea, as judged by Jeep brand designers and executives, will win a brand-new Jeep vehicle of their choice*. The contest begins now and ends on Thursday, July 2. The winner will be announced on Friday, July 31.

“Jeep ‘Easter eggs’ started with the 2011 Grand Cherokee,” said Mark Allen, Head of Jeep Design. “We added small Jeep grilles inside the headlamp bulb shields. It was an off-the-cuff addition of a graphic to an otherwise standard piece. After that, we started sprinkling small graphics on various vehicles.

“When we did the refresh on the Wrangler, we added a small side profile of a Jeep climbing up from the corner of the windshield, which became a point of delight for the customer,” said Allen. “These small elements are a surprise and delight for our customers and help convey the human touch behind our products, which is appreciated.”

“The Jeep brand’s legacy is a testament to the people who since 1941 have dedicated themselves to building SUVs engineered and designed to be the most capable in the world, and to the people who proudly own, or aspire to own, one of our vehicles,” said Christian Meunier, Global President of Jeep Brand, FCA. “With a history of nearly 80 years filled with memorable experiences past and present, we believe that the ideas submitted by our global community will be ones that only Jeep and its owners, fans and followers can uniquely tell.”

Entries will be judged by the following criteria:
  • Creativity: Entry presents the idea for the "Easter egg" icon in a creative, effective and compelling manner (25%)
  • Jeep Brand Power: Entry is in line with the Jeep brand spirit and is worthy of inclusion in the rare library of Jeep "Easter eggs" (25%)
  • Quality/Actionable: Entry clearly expresses the idea for the "Easter egg" icon in a clear and easily understood manner that is actionable by the sponsor for potential future use on a vehicle. Entry shows clarity of the thought process (25%)
  • Originality/Authenticity: Entry portrays a unique "Easter egg" idea that is clearly the entrant’s own idea and does not build upon any other idea or expression. Entry has a distinct conceptualization (25%)
With 13 million+ followers strong across the brand’s social media channels, the Jeep brand’s 2016 award-winning commercial “Portraits” noted that, “We don’t make Jeep. You do,” recognizing the global truth that the rightful ownership of the brand resides within its worldwide community of fans, followers and drivers. As a true cult brand, the Jeep "Easter eggs” contest is one more way for the brand to give its followers the chance to be a part of its storied history.

*NO PURCHASE OR PAYMENT NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN. Must be 18 years of age or older and a legal resident of the 50 US States or DC to participate. Void where prohibited. Contest starts at 09:00:00 AM ET on 06/18/20; ends at 11:59:59 PM ET on 07/02/20. ARV of prize: $50,000. For full Official Rules, visit Jeep Easter Egg Contest/. Review update: 2020 Jeep Gladiator Sport makes for a more useful Wrangler

July 28, 2020

The Jeep Gladiator is like a Wrangler, except it has a bed and enough towing capacity to haul a boat. And it’s only slightly less capable off-road than the Jeep Wrangler.

Set to square off with the Ford Ranger, Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, and Nissan Frontier, the Gladiator’s competitors are aimed at getting work done. The Gladiator takes a different approach by taking pickup truck capability and adding a whole lot more fun with an open-air driving experience that should appeal to those interested in a Wrangler or the upcoming 2021 Ford Bronco.

With a TCC Rating of 5.2 out of 10, the 2020 Jeep Gladiator wins over adults and kids alike with removable doors and roof, stellar off-road capability, a more manageable size than a full-size truck, and distinct style. But after a week with the 2020 Gladiator Sport hauling the kids around the lake, road-tripping to northern Minnesota, I found its handling to be atrocious, it’s expensive, and it’s loud on the highway.

Hit: Looks like a Wrangler

Featuring large fender flares, round headlights, an upright seven-slot grille and upright windshield, as well as an oversized front bumper, the Gladiator is a Wrangler with a bed. It’s classic, timeless, and cool.
