2012 Chrysler 300 Earns NHTSA's Highest Safety Rating

Feb 02, 2012

The 2012 Chrysler 300 has earned a five-star overall crash test rating, which is the highest possible, from the federal government’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

In composite tests, NHSTA scores vehicles for front and side crash safety, and the 2012 Chrysler 300 also earns five out of five stars in both of these areas. The Chrysler 300 receives a lower score of four stars for rollover risk, though.

The 2012 Chrysler 300 is one of few vehicles to get the five-star overall rating. The only other affordable large car to receive the five-star overall rating from NHTSA is the 2012 Buick LaCrosse.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has also rated the 2012 Chrysler 300 highly, and names it a Top Safety Pick for receiving the highest score of “Good” in front, side and rear crash tests and roof strength tests.

The 2012 Chrysler 300 is on sale now, and starts at $28,170.

2012 Chrysler 300 and 2012 Dodge Charger Achieve 5-Star Safety Rating from National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

Both 2012 Chrysler Group models achieve top 5-star rating in front driver and overall vehicle scores

4-star rating achieved in rollover tests

NHTSA NCAP rating for both models follows “Top Safety Pick” by Insurance Institute for Highway Safety earlier this year

Chrysler 300 SafetyTec and Dodge Charger Driver Confidence Group package enables the driver with a 360° perspective with available active safety features, including SmartBeam Headlamps, Adaptive Forward Lighting on Chrysler 300, Forward Collision Warning (FCW) with adaptive-cruise control (ACC), Blind-spot Monitoring (BSM) and Rear Cross Path (RCP) accident-avoidance systems

February 9, 2012 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - The 2012 Chrysler 300 and 2012 Dodge Charger have achieved 5-star safety ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The 5-star rating is the highest rating for safety by the Administration and measures vehicle safety performance in three categories, including front and side crashes as well as for rollover.

“We’re very pleased that both the 2012 Chrysler 300 and 2012 Dodge Charger have achieved the highest overall rating,” said Scott Kunselman, Senior Vice President-Engineering, Chrysler Group LLC. “The results of these tests reflect crashworthiness and performance in different scenarios.”

Both Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger achieved an overall 5-star vehicle safety score. The rating is a combination of frontal, side pole and barrier performance with the static stability factor accounting for the rollover rating.

Both Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger also achieved high marks in rollover testing with a 4-star rating.

“These vehicles are comprehensively equipped with advanced safety features,” added Kunselman. “Both vehicles are robustly designed with a rigid structure to protect occupants and have numerous advanced safety features including, available Adaptive Cruise Control which NHSTA notes as a technology proven to reduce crashes.”

The advanced Adaptive Cruise Control maintains a set distance between vehicles when the cruise control is engaged. Other safety and security features on the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger include standard electronic stability control and available blind-spot monitoring.

Earlier this year, the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger were named a “Top Safety Pick” by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Both the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger are equipped with more than 65 safety and security features, including segment-exclusive Ready Alert Braking and Rain Brake Support features to support overall vehicle handling and performance under all weather and pavement conditions.

Safety ratings are just part of the story with both the 2012 Chrysler 300 and 2012 Dodge Charger.

Both vehicles also are equipped with a new 8speed automatic transmission, a first by a domestic automaker. Combined with the award-winning 292 horsepower Pentastar V-6 engine, both vehicles achieve a Best-in-Class EPA-rated 31 miles-per-gallon on the highway. The eight-speed transmission also is available for all-wheel-drive models.

Both Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger also include state-of-the-art Uconnect® navigation and entertainment systems. The Garmin navigation system found in both vehicles recently was recognized by J.D. Power as the top consumer choice for in-vehicle navigation, Additionally, Dodge Charger recently received the Breakthrough Technology Award for 2012 from Edmunds.com for the Uconnect driver information system. Filling this AWD sedan’s wheel wells and aiding in its world-class handling are unique 19-inch eight spoke aluminum wheels finished in Satin Carbon with P235/55R19 all-season performance tires. Exterior paint colors for this Chrysler 300 include Bright White, Billet Silver Metallic and exclusively to this model, Glacier Blue Pearl Coat.

The interior of the Chrysler 300 Glacier exudes an athletic-luxury theme with 12-way power driver and passenger sport seats featuring black “Falls” cloth in the seat centers and leather-wrapped bolsters in black and finished with black French-seamed stitching. Exclusive use of Piano Black on interior center stack, instrument panel, steering wheel, gauge cluster and door panel elements provide a uniquely lacquered and highly detailed appearance. For even more spirited driving die-cast steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters with “Sport Mode” are ergonomically designed behind the 300 Glacier’s black leather-wrapped thick-rimmed steering wheel. Completing the enthusiast-designed interior are matte carbon hydrographic accents and black floor mats with black velour binding and “Glacier” logo embroidered.

Uconnect 8.4N — the segment’s largest handsfree communication system — now features improved map graphics
The 2013 Chrysler 300 sedan’s Uconnect 8.4N system has been upgraded for 2013, enhancing the award-winning Garmin navigation system with enhanced colors and graphics, along with a more Chrysler-brand focused appearance.
Enhancements to the Garmin navigation features integrated into the Uconnect 8.4N include improved graphics used to display road signs and lane guidance that now cover over 60,000 intersections across the United States. In addition, the Uconnect 8.4N system now also features 3-D buildings and terrain views. Information is very realistic and intuitive, enabling drivers to keep their hands on the wheel and focus on the road.

With the segment’s largest touchscreen display (8.4-inch), the easy to use Uconnect 8.4N with integrated Garmin navigation features voice recognition and SiriusXM Traffic. With natural voice commands, the Uconnect 8.4N enables passengers to input street addresses and navigate to points of interest. And with the integrated SiriusXM Traffic, real-time traffic monitoring notifies the driver or enables the Garmin navigation to reroute due to congested throughways.
For the Chrysler brand, keeping drivers focused on the road is a priority and the Uconnect 8.4N (and 8.4 model) includes handsfree texting, to keep passengers even more connected through voice commands. With a compatible Bluetooth phone, Uconnect enables text-to-speech for incoming text messages, and provides the driver with a list of popular responses for outgoing messages.

Segment-first eight-speed automatic transmission
Once limited to premium import vehicles costing twice as much, the new segment-exclusive ZF 8HP45 eight-speed automatic transmission expands the world-class power and fuel efficiency of the 2013 Chrysler 300, 300S, 300C and 300 Luxury Series models and offers class-leading fuel efficiency with respect to:

Best-in-class highway fuel economy (31 mpg highway)
Best-in-class V-6 all-wheel-drive (AWD) fuel economy (18 mpg city and 27 mpg highway)
Best-in-class combined fuel economy (23 mpg with RWD, 21 with AWD)
Unsurpassed city fuel economy (19 mpg RWD, 18 mpg AWD)
Overall unsurpassed fuel economy in its class (19 mpg city and 31 mpg highway with RWD)

The addition of three more gear ratios in the proven ZF eight-speed automatic transmission design help to reduce the gaps normally associated with upshifting and downshifting. Combined with the award-winning 292 horsepower – or new 300 horsepower – 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine, passengers will experience world-class levels of refinement due to small, evenly spaced ratios that provide quicker acceleration and smoother shifts.

Quicker shifts are possible on the new Chrysler 300S and 300C Luxury Series models as a result of a “Sport” shift mode that requires simple driver input. When the driver chooses to let the transmission shift in “Sport” mode, gear changes are quicker and revs are held higher for even more performance-oriented acceleration and higher shift dynamics. For even more control, the driver can also use a pair of die-cast, steering-wheel mounted paddle controls and view gear selection through an all-new full-color EVIC centered in the instrument cluster.

Chrysler and Beats by Dr. Dre premium audio experience
The partnership between Chrysler and Beats By Dr. Dre brings music-studio sound to consumers in cars not just by adding speakers, but working with the music makers themselves to reproduce sound the way that it’s made in the studio. Instead of the traditional approach to automotive sound, entrusting lab coat-adorned engineers as the arbiters of musical taste, Beats by Dr. Dre founders Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine worked side-by-side with the engineering team at Chrysler Group to design and tune the 10-speaker audio system.

Standard on 2013 Chrysler 300S, and available on Chrysler 300, 300C and 300C Luxury Series models, the Beats by Dr. Dre audio system includes a powerful 12-channel amplifier that integrates the heart of the Beats proprietary equalizer algorithm, creating the high-definition sound required in professional recording studios.

Delivering the mid- to high-range needed for studio-quality sound are three 3.5-inch speakers located in the instrument panel and two 3.5-inch speakers located in the rear doors. Two 6 x 9-inch front-door woofers provide bass, while two 6 x 9-inch speakers and a center-mounted 8-inch speaker located in the rear-shelf area provide full-range audio. Maximizing how music genres from hip hop to Motown should sound and feel, an 8-inch Beats Audio trunk-mounted dual-voice coil subwoofer with sealed enclosure delivers tight, powerful, punchy bass.

Chrysler 300 named “Top Safety Pick” by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety
The new Chrysler 300 was named a “Top Safety Pick” by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), achieving their highest rating.

IIHS recognizes vehicles with outstanding crashworthiness in front, side, rollover and rear crashes. The new Chrysler flagship received ‘good’ ratings, the highest achievable, in all four categories.

To be considered, vehicles must have available electronic stability control (ESC) systems that significantly reduce crash risks. Chrysler 300 has standard ESC. Other standard safety features include, full-length side-curtain airbags, seat-mounted side thorax air bags, driver’s knee bag, front-row reactive head restraints, Hill-start Assist, Rain Brake Support and Ready Alert Braking.

Hankook Tire America Corp. will supply Chrysler Group LLC with its Optimo H725 touring all-season tire as original equipment for 2013 Chrysler models.

The Optimo H725 will be on 2013 Chrysler 300 AWD models and 2013 Dodge Charger SXT, SXT Plus, and R/T AWD models. The tires supplied will be for the Pentastar V-6 and V-8 versions of these Chrysler and Dodge AWD flagship sedans in size P235/55R19H.

“Adding these Chrysler Group vehicles to our original equipment activities illustrates our continued commitment to both vehicle manufacturers and consumers,” says Soo Il Lee, President of Hankook Tire America Corp.

“Our original equipment partnerships are an important element of our overall strategy for growth in North America and I look forward to a continued relationship with the Chrysler Group in the future.”

Hankook began supplying the Chrysler Group’s Dodge brand in 2007 with original equipment tires for the Dodge Journey. This new original equipment fitment adds to the number of fitments Hankook has with leading global manufacturers such as Ford, General Motors, BMW, Audi, Hyundai, Kia, MINI and Volkswagen.

Hankook says it has been steadily expanding its portfolio of OE tire supply to premium automakers, light truck, and commercial truck manufacturers. In 2011, Hankook’s supply of OE tires increased 64% in the United States.

Like John Varvatos, the 2013 Chrysler 300 continues to prove that world-class quality, performance and craftsmanship can be designed and developed in Detroit. This collaboration enabled the Chrysler brand to mold its thinking in a similar way that has made John Varvatos a trailblazer of modern fashion. Influenced by rock ‘n’ roll and heavy industry, the Chrysler 300C John Varvatos Limited Edition and the 300C John Varvatos Luxury Edition, breed pride and give power to the meaning of “Imported from Detroit.” Both flagship sedans prove the belief, that when inspired, hard work can make beautiful things.

“Inspiration can come from anywhere, it doesn’t have to grow under office lights,” said Saad Chehab, President and CEO – Chrysler Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. “Our new Chrysler 300C John Varvatos sedans are more than a design partnership. They symbolize the soul of two great brands, respecting their Detroit roots, and who share a passion to deliver high-quality design that’s tough, yet tailored.”

“Working with the Chrysler team on this project has been amazing. It captured my Detroit roots and the pride that we all share,” said John Varvatos. “It is a great time for a new generation of Detroit leadership in the automobile world, and I am excited and proud to be a part of it.”
