Michelin Introduce Puncture Proof Airless Tire

Jun 6, 2019

Michelin's new Unique Puncture-Proof Tire System (Uptis) does away with one of the defining aspects of tires as we've known them for more than 100 years: the air inside. Unlike past attempts at airless tires, Uptis functions the way other modern tires do and, Michelin claims, will provide a similar driving experience.

Unveiled at the company's sustainable-mobility-focused Movin'On Summit in Montreal today, Uptis is a tire without a traditional sidewall that carries its load by the top thanks to a new resin-embedded fiberglass material that Michelin was granted over 50 patents for.
"The idea was to develop a technology that was strong enough to carry the load but light enough to replace the air," Cyrille Roget, technical and scientific communication director for the Michelin Group, told Car and Driver. "If you have a load on the tire and you cut all the spokes at the bottom, you will see that nothing will change, demonstrating that the load is carried by the top of it, not by the under parts." Other airless tires, he said, often carry the load at the bottom of the tire, which is very inefficient and causes extra heating due to compression.

Uptis is not Michelin's first airless concept tire. It builds on the Vision concept that was introduced at the 2017 summit meeting. That concept had four main components: it was airless, connected, could be 3D printed (or have a rechargeable tread pattern), and was 100 percent sustainable. Uptis tackles the first of those problems as part of what Roget called a "step by step" process to the tire of the future.

Michelin will test Uptis in the real world with General Motors. GM will outfit a fleet of its Chevrolet Bolt EV hatchbacks with the concept tires for road tests in Michigan later this year. Both companies said Uptis-style tires could be found on production passenger vehicles as early as 2024.

"We're focusing initially on electric vehicles because we think it fits very well with the zero-zero-zero vision," said Steven Kiefer, senior vice president of global purchasing and supply chain at General Motors, referring to the company's "zero crashes, zero emissions, zero congestion" mission. "The Bolt EV and our next-generation BEV are really the platform for that, so it's the logical first place."

The Uptis concept tires have a maximum speed of 130 miles per hour and a max load of 1102 pounds. Different versions with different specs and driving characteristics will be possible, Roget said. That's the kind of work Michelin will do with GM to figure out the right structure and number of spokes, which type of rubber to put on the outside, and how to embed the fiberglass in the tire depending on the vehicle application. No matter how the Uptis ends up, it will be more stable than other tires, he said.

"Whatever the temperature, the profile of the tire will be exactly the same," Kiefer said. "So it's a very stable solution. No pressure check, no pressure adjustment."

Theoretically, the tread life for the Uptis is the same as a standard tire, Roget said, but in the real world it will be longer because drivers who use it will not be driving around on improperly inflated tires. "You always have the right pressure, so the tire will have a longer life," he said.

Common and Uncommon Tire Hazards

Common and Uncommon Tire Hazards

June 18, 2019

Consumers with flat tires may be surprised to find they were stopped in their tracks by a spoon. Or wrench. Or pair of pliers. But finding kitchen utensils and tools in flat tires is not a surprise to automotive service technicians.

According to a new national survey conducted by Auto Service Professional, a sister publication of Modern Tire Dealer, there are a lot of potential hazards likely to damage tires if drivers are not careful about their surroundings. A spoon is just one of the more unusual threats.

"The four tires on your vehicle are the only parts to come in contact with and keep you connected to the road," says Jess Egerton, director of brand development at Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. Cooper commissioned the study in order to better understand the road hazards that automotive technicians see on a daily basis in their shops.

"That’s why, for safety and performance reasons, you have to properly care for, maintain and inspect them.”

According to the study, some of the most common causes of tire damage are running over something, like a curb (72%), nails (70%) and potholes (39%). Other common causes of tire damage are more easily preventable, such as driving with bald tires (48%) and driving on a tire with low air pressure (44%). Checking tire pressure, rotating tires and paying attention to the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) light are the top tips from auto service professionals on proper tire maintenance.

And the one location drivers probably most want to avoid when driving? Construction zones, which are a big cause of so many tires being punctured by spikes, wrenches, screwdrivers and pliers.

In summer, under-inflated tires are the most common offender (88%). They lead to overheating, which in turn leads to tire damage. In the winter, the top two sources of tire damage are potholes (72%) and unseen hazards such as cracks in the pavement hidden under that fresh blanket of snow (59%).

When asked, "When you see a damaged tire, of the following which are typically the most common causes?" technicians responding to the survey answered as follows:
72% tire ran over something
70% nails
48% tire was worn out/no tread left/cords showing
44% driven with low air pressure
39% potholes
35% hit a curb
17% debris dropped from trucks or other vehicles
11% running off side of road
10% construction zones
9% dated infrastructure (worn, needs repair)
9% hit parking lot divider
7% rocks
6% glass
6% stones
5% weather-related
3% wood
3% difficult terrain (cobblestones, off-road driving
3% Other

Tips for drivers

Nearly 100 million Americans are expected to have taken a family vacation by year’s end, according to a recent AAA Travel survey, with upcoming spring and summer road trips topping many of their plans. Here are some of the tips you and your service technicians can pass along to your customers:

* Check tire inflation on a regular basis. Operating a vehicle with even just one tire under-inflated by 8 psi can reduce the life of a tire by 9,000 miles and increase fuel consumption by 4%, says Cooper.

2. Replace tires when worn to 2/32 inches tread depth anywhere on the tread face.

3. Visually check tires for things like missing valve caps, uneven tread wear and any foreign objects that could spell serious problems should they become even more deeply embedded while driving.

As for finding a spoon in a tire, here are more unusual hazards technicians listed in the 2019 Enemies of the Road Study: pieces of toys, porcupine quill, turtle shell and pork chop bones.

“Auto service professionals have pulled a lot of unusual things out of tires over the years,” says Greg Smith, publisher of Auto Service Professional, or ASP for short. “But, really, it might surprise people to know that a lot of tire damage is simply due to poor maintenance and wear and tear.”

Triangle Tire: What You Need to Know

By Kyle Patrick Mar 12, 2020

Triangle Tire: What You Need to Know

Triangle Tire recently held an event in Toronto to launch its full lineup of passenger vehicle tires in Canada.

It’s not a new brand: founded in 1976, it now produces over 24 million tires annually. The vast majority of those—some 20 million—are for cars, trucks and SUVs. Triangle tires are produced in China, with two research and development centers globally: one in China, and the other in the USA. Canada joins a list of 170 countries that Triangle sells its wares in.

In the Great White North, Dynamic Tire will be the exclusive distributor of Triangle Tire. We were on hand to check out the lineup and talk with employees from both companies. The primary message from all was one of value: Triangle tires are for those that want the greatest cost savings for the smallest sacrifice in on-road performance. Perhaps most surprising (and welcome): all Triangle tires come with a standard road hazard warranty, which is very uncommon in the passenger car segment. There is also a 30-day no-hassle trial period. Clearly, Triangle is targeting everyday drivers here.

Below we focus on three of the brand’s major passenger car applications; for the full lineup, check out Dynamic Tire.

Triangle Tire Advantex TR259

The Advantex TR259 will likely be the volume leader for Triangle, as it’s the brand’s all-season SUV and crossover tire. And we don’t need to remind you of what’s most popular on the roads these days…

The TR259 comes in a range of sizes, from 16-inch items to 19-inchers. With cross-section widths of 215 through to 265, the TR259 covers most modern crossover and SUV applications. Its near-symmetrical design is meant for the place most crossovers spend most of their time: on normal paved roads. That translates to a quieter ride and improved fuel economy. If you’re looking for a set of rubber a little more chunky for your crossover, however…

Triangle Tire AgileX TR292
The AgileX is for those wanting a little more utility in their sport utility’s tires. The blocky tread pattern of the TR292 makes it better suited for a blend of on- and off-road situations. The deeper sipes and shoulder slots improve water dispersion, forcing it out from under the treads. With wet and muddy spring time around the corner, that’s a key selling point.

Like its more road-biased sibling, the TR259, the TR292 is available in a variety of sizes. Its widest spread of width options is in the 16-inch realm, with 15-, 17-, and even a 20-inch option also in the lineup.

Triangle Tire Advantex TC101

For those sticking to cars, Triangle offers the Advantex TC101. A humbler, value-oriented model, it’s an all-season performance tire for smaller sedans and hatchbacks.

With even modern sub-compacts running 17-inch wheels or larger, it’s easy to forget older cars still run more reasonable wheel sizes. That’s why it’s good to see 15-inch options for the TC101, as well as 16- and 17-inch models. They’re properly narrow too, coming in as thin as 185-series for the two smaller diameters. We’re big proponents of narrow tires; they make cars more fun at speeds that won’t land you in trouble.
