Goodyear faces criminal investigation over RV tire recall

Byron Hurd
Thu, January 26, 2023

Goodyear is under criminal investigation over its handling of an RV tire recall campaign initiated in 2022. The campaign targeted the Goodyear G159, a tire originally produced between 1996 and 2003, after an investigation revealed multiple instances of tread separation that lead to crashes, some of which were fatal. Per the Associated Press, it's not yet clear why the grand jury is collecting evidence, but it is likely an attempt to ascertain whether Goodyear acted in good faith regarding the defect — the company asserts it did — when it first learned of the issue, allegedly as far back as 2002.

NHTSA's initial investigation into the Goodyear G159 began in 2017 when a lawsuit was filed alleging safety defects had led to motorhome crashes that resulted in deaths and injuries to their occupants. Goodyear began cooperating with NHTSA's investigation in 2018, but ultimately declined to conduct a recall. Bringing to mind the infamous Firestone campaign of the 1990s, Goodyear insisted that the tires were not defective, but were being used outside of their prescribed operating conditions, citing examples of customers overloading and/or underinflating their tires. Goodyear says the motorhome manufacturers also failed to specify proper reserve loads.

In its statement to AP, Goodyear said the G159 consistently met the company's "demanding" safety standards. Compounding the issue, the tire had been out of production for nearly two decades; virtually eliminating the possibility that one could be encountered in a retail setting. But after further pressure, Goodyear agreed to initiate a recall campaign to address any tires that may have slipped through the cracks.

Airless tires aren't ready for production cars, but European police are eyeing them because they can't be shot out during car chases, a Michelin executive said in a recent interview with The Drive.

"The police of some European countries visited us and said, 'Guys, we want this under our cars, because when we have to rush after the bad guys, usually they put a bullet in our tires before they go. So, we need it,'" Michelin senior vice president Bruno de Feraudy said in the interview, adding that Michelin had tested its Uptis airless tire at speeds up to 130 mph on police vehicles on its own track.

Police cars aren't the only potential application. In the same article, Michelin CEO Florent Menegaux is quoted as saying autonomous vehicles might be a good fit as well, again because they aren't prone to punctures like conventional pneumatic tires. That means passengers won't have to get out of a vehicle they're not even driving to change a tire.

Michelin first showed the prototype Uptis, short for Unique Puncture-proof Tire System, on a Chevrolet Bolt EV in 2019. At the time, General Motors said it would test the Uptis tires on a fleet of Bolt EVs, with a view toward making them available on production vehicles as early as 2024.

In the interview, Menegaux said Michelin has also been in talks with Tesla about testing the Uptis tires, but neither executive would confirm that the 2024 launch date discussed by GM is still valid. While Michelin launched an airless tire for UTVs in 2018, and showed a version for lawnmowers and skid-steer loaders before that, it's unclear when, if ever, you'll be able to use them on your car. Menegaux noted that airless tires will likely always be limited to specific applications, and won't replace conventional tires.

Other tire manufacturers, including Bridgestone, Goodyear, and Hankook, have shown prototype or concept airless tires over the years as well.

Bridgestone Turanza EV Grand Touring Tire Promises Good Performance Without Sacrificing Range

Kevin Williams

Published May 26, 2023

Bridgestone unveils a new tire meant for EVs.

EVs are a little different compared to gas cars. They tend to be heavier, with all of their batteries mounted low. They make torque instantly and are often much quicker than their gas counterparts. Thus, EVs need a specialty tire to rein in their inherently different driving dynamics. Bridgestone’s new Turanza EV Grand Touring tire is meant as a direct OEM replacement for premium EVs, according to the brand.

It seems like Bridgestone has really taken the differences in EV to heart, crafting a tire that specifically addresses the common issues that plague EV tires. It features ENLITEN technology, a feature that Bridgestone says helps “optimize all-season performance, provide longer wear life, and allow for the incorporation of renewable and recycled materials in its tire products.” The tread is meant to stave off wear, but not at the expense of performance, especially in wet conditions. It claims to offer good steering and handling feel, but not compromising rolling resistance. So, range shouldn’t be too affected by the Turanza EV tires. The tire even incorporates a 50% blend of recycled materials.
Bridgestone says it plans to deploy the ENLITEN philosophy and technology across more tire models in its lineup. Coupled with the use of sustainable materials, the tire looks to make an impact on how EV drivers drive, without befouling the environment. Tires make a big difference in how EVs work – it’s great to see more options for savvy and environmentally conscious consumers to choose from.
