Bridgestone Will Raise Tire Prices on March 1

Bridgestone Will Raise Tire Prices on March 1

Posted on January 26, 2017

Now there are five. Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations LLC is the latest tire company to announce price increases in 2017.

Effective March 1, Bridgestone says it will adjust prices up to 8% across a range of passenger, light truck, off-the-road and agricultural tire products and tubes in North America.

The reason for the increases? Rising raw material costs “and other market dynamics.”

The new pricing will vary by business unit and by product line.

“Our sales and account teams will soon provide further details to our customers,” adds Bridgestone.

Michelin Defender Gets an Upgrade

Michelin Defender Gets an Upgrade

March 8, 2017

Michelin North America Inc. has updated its five-year-old Defender tire with a tread that the company says makes it "the longest lasting tire among leading competitors' tires."

The speed rating of the new Defender has been increased to H, and the tire also carries an 80,000-mile warranty.

"We know that many consumers make tire-purchasing decisions based on warranty and price, but tire warranties, unfortunately, do not always accurately reflect the actual wear performance of a tire," says Scott Clark, chief operating officer of Michelin North America. "Our testing shows that specific tires from several leading competitors with mileage warranties between 80,000 to 90,000 miles will have a difficult time delivering the wear-life proclaimed by their mileage warranty."

Michelin credits a commissioned third-party test for its "longest lasting" claim. The test put the Defender up against the Goodyear Assurance TripleTred All-Season tire in size 225/55R17 97H, the Continental TrueContact in size 225/55R17 97H, and the Pirelli P4 Four Seasons+ in 225/55R17 97T on a 2016 Chevrolet Malibu. The tire also was tested in tire 205/55R16 91H versus the Bridgestone Turanza Serenity Plus in 205/55R16 91H tire size on a 2015 Honda Civic.

The company says advanced Michelin tire technology helps ensure the highest level of performance throughout the tire's lifespan. The new Michelin Defender complements the Defender LTX M/S introduced in 2015 with these key benefits:

Longevity: Maxtouch construction ensures that tire contact forces are evenly distributed to maximize tire life, while the Evertread compound is designed to provide durability for improved tread life.

Safety: Intellisie technology is designed to maximize the tire's biting edges for optimum all-season traction, while rain grooves evacuate water in wet conditions to prevent hydroplaning.

Comfort: Comfort control technology is designed to minimize noise and provide a smoother, quieter ride.

The new Defender will be an H speed-rated product for use in both T and H applications, which will ease confusion for consumers and dealers and increase market coverage for up to 83% of passenger vehicles in the marketplace today.

Key vehicle fitments for the product line include: Buick LaCrosse, Chevrolet Malibu, Chrysler Pacifica, Ford Focus, Honda Odyssey, Nissan Altima and Toyota Sienna.

The new Defender will be available in 12 sizes beginning in March with a total of 32 sizes available by late 2017. The manufacturer's starting suggested retail price (MSRP) is $115.

Prices on Yokohama Tires Will Increase

Prices on Yokohama Tires Will Increase Sept. 1

July 31, 2017

Yokohama Tire Corp. will raise prices up to 4% on all of its commercial and off-the-road (OTR) tires sold in the U.S., effective September 1. The prices of some consumer tires will go up, too.

Some in-line adjustments on consumer tires will be implemented at the same time, according to Yokohama. The company did not specify which consumer tires would be affected by the price increase.

“We reluctantly took a first-step price increase in early 2017 in response to the escalation in operating and material costs that peaked in late 2016,” says Jeff Barna, chief operating officer.

“That modest increase left us under-recovered, hence requiring us to take further action.”

eBay Offers Tire Installation in the U.S.

eBay Offers Tire Installation in the U.S.

October 19, 2017

Another online seller has launched a tire installation network in the U.S. — eBay Motors.

eBay Motors, a part of eBay Inc., says the service, which it unveiled in May in Germany, is accessible to customers in the U.S. as of Oct. 19, 2017.

Shoppers who purchase tires on eBay can opt to have them shipped to a local installation location at no additional cost. The online selling platform says it has 9,000 installation locations across the U.S., "and tire inventory that spans across all major brands."

eBay Motors says it is "redefining the automotive shopping experience."

“Every seven seconds, a wheel or tire part is sold on eBay Motors in the U.S.,” says Todd Madeiros, vice president of parts and accessories at eBay. “Now, with tire installation services, shoppers have access to eBay’s tire inventory, plus the added convenience of expert local installation to fully complete their automotive needs.”

Here’s how the service works:

With My Garage and a tire size finder, buyers can browse a selection of tires that fit their vehicle make and model.
The customer selects his or her preferred tires and chooses from a list of installers based on preferred location and price.
Shortly after the tires are purchased, the buyer contacts the desired tire shop to schedule an appointment for installation.
When the customer arrives for the installation, the tires will be there.

eBay says its tire installation services include mounting, wheel balancing and installing new valves. The service prices reflect the installation charge for the number of tires purchased.

And that's just one of two new automotive-related service eBay has launched.

Virtual Tech

Virtual Tech allows buyers to shop and connect directly with Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certified technicians via an add-on cost.

The service gives buyers advice on what to purchase and how to install parts in order to repair or upgrade their car or truck. Virtual Tech sessions can be purchased for ten-minute ($19.95) or twenty-minute ($49.95) durations. For a limited time, sessions will be discounted to $14.95 and $44.95, respectively.

“When shopping for parts and accessories, many of our buyers may stumble across a question or need directions when it comes to the installation process,” says Madeiros. “With our new Virtual Tech add-on, we’re bridging the gap and helping to connect shoppers with experienced professionals, while also providing them with our massive selection of inventory.”
