Goodyear Adds Tire With 85,000-Mile Warranty

Goodyear Adds Tire With 85,000-Mile Warranty to Assurance Family

January 26, 2018

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. introduced a passenger tire with an 85,000-mile tread wear warranty to 1,550 dealers attending its 2018 Customer Conference in Nashville, Tenn.

The company says the new Assurance MaxLife, the highest-mileage tire in its nearly 120-year history, is designed for savvy consumers looking for quality with long-lasting value

The newest addition to the Assurance family delivers up to 30% more miles of all-season traction compared to the standard all-season tire, according to Goodyear.

The Goodyear Assurance MaxLife also features a tread wear gauge that shows how much tread life remains as the tire wears, allowing drivers to conveniently read their tread depth through built-in wear gauges at any time.

“The Goodyear Assurance MaxLife combines years of experience with today’s technology to deliver long wear, reliability and great value for consumers,” says Andy Traicoff, vice president, North America Sales.

The Goodyear Assurance MaxLife is available in 45 sizes, from 15 inches to 20 inches, and covers 75% of the cars, minivans and SUVs on the road today.

The tire fits vehicles like the Ford Escape; Toyota Camry, Corolla and RAV 4; Nissan Altima and Rogue; Honda Accord, Civic and CR-V; and Kia Sorrento.

Since 2004, Goodyear has sold more than 60 million Assurance tires. Goodyear also launched an all-weather pursuit tire for law enforcement fleets, three commercial tires and a waste-haul retread at its customer conference, which concludes on Jan. 28.

Vehicles and Tires Made in the U.S. Still Matter

Vehicles and Tires Made in the U.S. Still Matter -- For Now

March 8, 2018

Would you consider Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc. a domestic or foreign car company? The parent company is based in Japan. But Toyota has been manufacturing vehicles in the U.S. since 1972.

Also, along with Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Corp., it is part of the Big 3 car producers in the U.S., having supplanted Fiat Chrysler Automobiles US LLC (FCA) -- also owned by a foreign company -- last year.

Our government cares, but not in the way you might think. It only is concerned with how a vehicle is marketed. If it is marketed as "Made in the USA," it must meet certain guidelines.

To be able to say a vehicle is Made in the USA, it must be “all or virtually all” made in the U.S., according to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

What does that mean? The FTC tries to clear that up: “'All or virtually all' means that all significant parts and processing that go into the product must be of U.S. origin. That is, the product should contain no — or negligible — foreign content."

Unfortunately, the FTC doesn't define "negligible."

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's "Automobile Parts Content Labeling" regulation requires passenger vehicles manufactured after Oct. 1, 1994, "to have labels specifying their percentage value of U.S./Canadian parts content, the country of assembly, and countries of origin of the engine and transmission." Its purpose is "to help consumers in the selection of new vehicles by providing information about the country of origin of vehicles and their parts."

Back to Toyota. In the April 2018 issue of Consumer Reports (CR), Toyota fared well in the "Best & Worst Cars, SUVs and Trucks" comparison testing. Four of its vehicles were among CR's Top 10 picks (Corolla, Camry, Sienna and Highlander), and it ruled the mid-size and smaller categories, including the Compact Electric and Hybrid category (the Prius Three was No. 1, Prius Prime Premium was No. 3).

As an aside, I found it interesting that one of the best-selling vehicles in the U.S. in 2017, the Toyota Rav 4, finished fourth in the Compact SUV category. CR still recommended it, but the Subaru Forester and two Honda CR-V models were ranked higher.

And only two of the 23 vehicle categories was led by one of the original Big 3 companies: Full-sized Pickups (Ford F-150 XLT) and Large Cars (Chevrolet Impala Premier).

Ten original equipment tire brands can be found on Toyota's in the U.S. Here they are, with their market share, courtesy of the 2018 Modern Tire Dealer Facts Issue:

Bridgestone 27% Michelin 24%

Goodyear 12% Dunlop 8%

Continental 7% BFGoodrich 6%

Toyo 5% Yokohama 5%

Firestone 3% General 3%

The market share of the 10 brands is based on U.S.-content, too: Either the vehicle or the tires had to be produced in the U.S.

I have had tire dealers tell me that to some of their customers, Made in the U.S. or Made in America still matters. But it remains hard to define, and is slowly becoming irrelevant. I've seen tires marketed as Made in America without the retailer actually knowing; if the manufacturer has a tire plant in the U.S., their thinking goes, that counts.

Will anyone younger than a baby boomer care if their tires or vehicles were Made in the U.S. 10 years from now? I don't think so.

Amazon Picks Its Partner for Tire Installation — Sears

Amazon Picks Its Partner for Tire Installation — Sears

May 9, 2018

Amazon.com has picked the company that will be the first to offer tire installation and balancing services for consumers who buy any tire on its website. It's Sears Auto Centers.

Sears Holdings Corp. made the announcement May 9. Sears says it will install any brand of tires purchased on Amazon. The service will begin "in the coming weeks" in eight metropolitan markets and will be available through 47 Sears Auto Centers in those markets: Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, San Francisco and Washington, D.C.

After the initial launch, Sears says it will "quickly" expand the service to Amazon customers through all of its 400-plus Sears Auto Center locations in the U.S.

The partnership with Amazon will bring about another benefit for Sears. The company's DieHard all-season passenger tires will be sold on Amazon.com.

When the system is rolled out, Amazon will offer consumers a "ship-to-store" option that's integrated into its checkout process. Customers will select their tires and also choose their preferred Sears Auto Center location and preferred date and time for installation. Sears will follow up and confirm the appointment time.

The Sears-Amazon partnership began in July 2017 when the brick-and-mortar retailer began selling its Kenmore appliances on the world's largest shopping site.

"Kenmore is now distributed nationally on Amazon with over 250 products and we are exceeding customer service level expectations," says Tom Park, president of the Kenmore, Craftsman and DieHard brands at Sears Holdings.

In December, DieHard-brand products such as jump starters and battery chargers were added to Amazon.com. DieHard Advanced Gold AGM automotive batteries were added in February 2018, and now DieHard all-season passenger tires can be purchased on Amazon.com.

"Amazon.com customers can expect terrific performance and reliability from DieHard tires and professional installation from Sears Auto Centers," says Park. "We're thrilled to expand our assortment of this iconic brand to include passenger tires on Amazon.com."

Michelin Dominates

Michelin Dominates the Conversation Among Automotive Influencers

Jul 16, 2018

In the first ever Automotive Influencer Report on Tires, Michelin is the clear leader when measuring the share of conversation each brand has.

Key Findings
Michelin dominates the discussion and is broadening the gap
Seasonality plays an important factor
Tire brands have a dramatically different share of conversation metrics depending on which automaker the discussion relates to

Across the world’s largest online automotive audience, every month tens of millions of visitors seek the advice of community influencers, talking about everything from vehicle reliability, to dealership experience, to parts and service. They also talk about tires, and the first annual Automotive Influencer Report on Tires provides insight on the tire brands that are dominating the conversation on the VerticalScope platform.

In 2017 the brand that had the overwhelming share the tire conversation was Michelin with a convincing 22.74 percent of the discussion. In second was BFGoodrich, at roughly half that, making up 12.14 percent of the conversation. The third most discussed brand at 10.39 was Goodyear, just edging out Pirelli at 9.1 percent. Rounding out the top five is Firestone at 6.28 percent of the conversation.

“An industry leader, from passenger tires to motorsports, it’s no surprise to see Michelin dominating the conversation on our platform,” said VerticalScope VP of Content, Colum Wood.

“With well-over 100 million monthly visitors, the industry insights we’re able to dive into are practically limitless. As fascinating as the Automotive Influencer Report on Tires is, it’s really quite superficial when it comes to our data mining capabilities. It’s also the first in a series of reports VerticalScope will be providing to help evolving industries see and react to trends we’re monitoring in real time.”

MICHELIN’S DOMINATION IS GROWING

Comparing the data to the year previous, Michelin has actually been growing its share of the conversation, with 20.6 percent of the tire-related discussion in 2016. BFG also maintained its spot, but with 13.62 percent of the conversation in 2016 their influence has diminished. Goodyear’s share of the conversation has also diminished this year, with 10.9 percent in 2016. Rounding out the top five in 2016 were Pirelli at 8.44 percent and Firestone at 5.84 percent.

SEASONAL CHANGES

Dividing the conversation seasonally, the bulk of the discussion surrounds winter or snow tires, which make up 50.76 percent of the posts, compared to summer or performance tires at 30.57 percent and all-season tires at 16.67 percent.

Charting the data week-by-week it’s interesting to see that while the majority of brands remain steady throughout the year, conversations around Michelin are seasonal. Well-known for manufacturing ultra high performance summer tires, discussions around the brand actually dip in the summer months compared to its dominance in the winter months.

“In terms of actionable insights, this data is telling me two things,” said David Domitrovic, who oversees insights and analytics for VerticalScope’s Customer Success Team. “First, for the other brands on this list, it’s laying the groundwork for an opportunistic approach, helping them refine their conquesting strategy. Second, it indicates an opportunity for the brand to interact with customers at a key point in their tire shopping journey.”

In total, Michelin’s share of the winter tire related conversation is by far the most of any brand at 30 percent, compared to the next closest, Bridgestone, at 12.87 percent.

WHAT TIRES RANK BEST FOR WHICH AUTOMAKERS?

Comparing tire conversations related to automotive manufacturers, such as two full-line automakers like Ford and Toyota, it’s interesting to see other differences.

The top three most popular tire brands discussed in Ford communities are Uniroyal, Firestone and Maxxis, while on Toyota audiences the list is Yokohama, Federal Tire and Toyo. Surprisingly, despite Michelin’s dominance overall, it’s not one of the top three tire brands for either of these two automakers.

Drilling down on a site-by-site basis, we can see that on a community like VWVortex.com, Michelin makes up a full 29.4 percent of the discussion. While that may seem like dominance, it’s nothing to the share of conversation BFGoodrich has on WranglerForum.com with almost half (47.63%) of all tire conversations related to that brand.

See below for a full list of tire brands and how they placed.

Monro Inc. will install tires bought on Amazon.com. The company will initially offer the installation service to consumers in the Baltimore area, but eventually it will expand to include all of Monro's 1,174 stores in 27 states.

Monro follows Sears in offering tire installation for Amazon tire shoppers.

The service in Baltimore is available now to consumers who purchase tires on Amazon and select the "ship-to-store" option for any of Monro's Mr. Tire Auto Service Centers stores in the region.

Consumers will buy the tires online, choose a Mr. Tire store for installation, and also choose a date and time for installation. The tires will be sent to the store.

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. will increase the price of select consumer tire lines on Sept. 1.

Prices will go up by as much as 3% on all Goodyear brands. The increase applies to the U.S. only, and Goodyear attributed it to "rising costs" and says it "reflects the strong value of the Goodyear brands."

Sears Takes Its Amazon Tire Installation Service National

Sears Takes Its Amazon Tire Installation Service National

Posted on August 28, 2018

Sears Auto Center has expanded its tire installation program with Amazon.com. The service is available nationwide.

In May Sears announced it would be the first installation partner for Amazon customers who bought any brand of tires. The initial launch covered eight metro markets and included 47 Sears Auto Center locations. Now, Sears stores in all 50 states offer tire installation and balancing for Amazon shoppers.

The expanded Amazon partnership comes a week after Sears announced it would shutter another 46 Kmart and Sears stores in the U.S. Of those stores, 25 also have Sears Auto Center locations that will close. (As of May 5, 2018, there were 529 Sears stores in the U.S., but they don't all have auto centers.)

In July Monro Inc. said it had signed up to install tires for Amazon, as well. It's starting in the Baltimore market, but will extend the service to all of its stores in 27 states.

"The response from Amazon customers around this program has been extremely positive," says Mike McCarthy, vice president and general manager of Sears Automotive. "Our competitive bundled price for tire installation, which includes the installation of the tire, wheel balancing, valve stem or tire pressure monitor rebuild kit and the tire disposal fee is resonating with these customers. We're thrilled to extend this valuable service across even more areas and into hundreds of additional stores.

"Providing excellent auto service, such as fast installation and free Performance Snapshot evaluations, is at the core of our business and partnerships. By working with Amazon, we're proud to further meet and surpass that commitment, thanks to the ease and convenience of their program."

Amazon customers select their tires, then can choose the nearest Sears Auto Center and their preferred date and time for the tire installation. Sears Auto Center then contacts them to confirm their appointment.

Sears Auto Center is a division of Sears, Roebuck and Co. For more information visit www.SearsAuto.com.
