Total sales of Toledo-built Jeep Libertys plunged 31 percent overall in 2007, despite a complete redesign last year that sought to give it a more iconic "Jeep" look.

Also yesterday, Chrysler gave further details of its planned elimination of the third shift at its Toledo North Assembly Plant, saying it planned to cut about 780 workers in early February.

Sales of the Toledo-build Dodge Nitro fell 2 percent in December from the previous year to 7,350 units and totaled 74,825 for the year. The Nitro went on sale in late 2006.

Jim Press, vice chairman and president of Chrysler LLC, said company officials were "very, very bullish on the Jeep brand," and on the new Liberty in particular. He attributed the sales numbers to decisions made last year by the former DaimlerChrysler AG and to delays in rolling out Liberty's dramatic "Sky Slider" sunroof system.
