In four years, Chrysler says either the Jeep Liberty or the Dodge Nitro will have to go. Both the Liberty and the Nitro are made at the Toledo north assembly plant. As far as sales go, the Liberty is winning the race.
Sales for U.S. automakers are way down. During today's conference call, heads of Chrysler say there may be a silver lining. Chrysler sales from August of this year were down 34 percent compared to August of last year, but they were up 12 percent from July.
Toledo-built Jeep Liberty sales fared even better. They were down 14 percent from August of last year, but up 24 percent from July. Chrysler points to several factors, including its financial arm cutting lease options and deep discounts in the "Shop 'til You Drive" campaign.
A spokesperson also talked about "Project Genesis". The strategy involves pitting the Nitro against the Liberty and phasing out the weaker seller by 2012.
In four years, Chrysler promises you'll only see one or the other. Chrysler also cut back on manufacturing to cut costs. The company now says it has its lowest inventory since 1995.

WOW Great News if they plan to keep the NITRO till 2012. I really thought the 09 model was going to be the last. Time will tell and this "Project Genesis" thing might change what might take place before 2012. Lets hope not.
