2010 Nitro:Three New Models!

The Nitro is more macho and spawns three new models: the Heat, Detonator and Shock, which range from $23,995 to $26,995.

All-new Dodge Nitro model lineup gives more bang for your buck

Dodge Detonator

The Dodge Nitro lineup has been revised and renamed for 2010, offering new exterior and interior styling and new standard features and safety equipment for 2010. These new models (Heat, Detonator and Shock) provide Nitro customers with more standard content, including a standard 4.0-liter V-6 engine, 20-inch aluminum wheels, eight premium speakers with a 368-watt amplifier and 9-inch subwoofer, deep-tinted glass, Uconnect Phone, iPod Control, SIRIUS Satellite Radio, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, speed control and security alarm.

In addition to the curb appeal gained from its 20-inch painted Mopar® aluminum wheels and body-color grille with bright billets, the 2010 Dodge Nitro Heat packs a punch with 23 percent more horsepower and 12 percent more torque than the previous entry-level model. With its aluminum 4.0-liter overhead cam V-6 engine, the Nitro Heat, and the entire Nitro lineup, delivers 260 horsepower (194 kW) and 265 lb.-ft. (359 N*m) of torque with a five-speed automatic transmission. MSRP for the 2010 Dodge Nitro Heat is $23,995 (including $745 destination).

The Dodge Nitro Detonator offers new exterior design cues, as well as standard interior and safety features that were previously optional on the former SXT model. The new Dodge Detonator model features 20-inch Mopar polished/painted aluminum wheels, hood decal, eight speakers plus subwoofer, remote start, ParkSense® rear-park assist and color-keyed premium cloth interior that matches the exterior paint color. MSRP for the 2010 Dodge Nitro Detonator is $25,995 (including $745 destination).

The Dodge Nitro Shock adds heated leather seats and a sun roof to the Nitro Detonator model. MSRP for the 2010 Dodge Nitro Shock is $26,995 (including $745 destination).

The new 2010 Dodge Nitro lineup is now available in nine exterior colors, including Detonator Yellow Clear Coat (late availability).

hey everyone. Im not sure if anyone can be of assistance but i have ordered a nitro sxt as the model is labelled in aus. The dealer said the vehicle is awd now i have read in a few forums that it is in fact 2wd or switched to 4wd high ratio. I know there isnt a huge difference but i would like to know. As far as i am aware the sxt has many of the nitro rt's suspension and running gear. But no one at the dealership can make it any clearer. And help would be greatly appreciated...

Welcome!
If this is a USA built 2010 Nitro and their latest model it is the same as the R/T here, otherwise I doubt anyone really knows for sure what is being used out of the Country at this time. Sorry...

2010 Dodge Nitro ignites Mid-size SUV Segment

Dodge Nitro is Dodge’s first mid-size SUV. With its bold styling and aggressive stance, Dodge Nitro is unlike any other mid-size SUV in the marketplace. For 2010, Dodge will offer two models – Dodge Nitro SE and SXT.

New for 2010 is interactive Decel Fuel Shut Off (iDFSO). iDFSO turns off fuel during vehicle deceleration, which improves fuel economy. This feature, standard on 3.7- and 4.0-liter engines, improves fuel economy without any noticeable changes in engine performance. In addition, the new Fuel-saver indicator displays when the vehicle is driven in a fuel-efficient manner, providing drivers with continuous fuel-consumption feedback.

The standard 3.7-liter V-6 engine on the 2010 Dodge Nitro SE and SXT models produce 210 hp (157 kW) @ 5,200 rpm and 235 lb.-ft. (319 N•m) of torque @ 4,000 rpm. An exhaust-gas recirculation valve helps increase fuel economy.

The 4.0-liter V-6 engine is optional on Dodge Nitro SXT. The engine delivers 260 hp (194 kW) @ 6,000 rpm and 265 lb.-ft. (359 N•m) of torque @ 4,200 rpm.

The 2010 Dodge Nitro features a coil-spring independent front suspension and a five-link, coil-spring rear suspension. The independent front suspension gives the driver an optimum combination of ride, handling and steering, which provides a greater sense of control and precision. The solid five-link rear suspension, including upper and lower trailing links and track bar, provides higher lateral stiffness for vehicle responsiveness and outstanding handling.
A performance suspension is optional on Dodge Nitro SXT. This suspension emphasizes responsive, fun-to-drive handling accompanied by a firm ride.
Dodge Nitro features a part-time four-wheel-drive system. Two-wheel- and four-wheel-drive lock modes are electronically controlled by a switch in the center console, which may be selected at any time with the part-time four-wheel drive system.

From a safety standpoint, four-wheel-disc anti-lock brakes (ABS), Brake Assist, Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Brake Assist, Electronic-roll Mitigation (ERM) and All-speed traction control are standard.

Review: Nitro Shock

Posted on Fri, Jun. 18, 2010
2010 Dodge Nitro Shock AWD

The Nitro, with its squarish shape, blunt nose and fat fender flares, looks a bit like a street-fighter bulldog, and that’s fitting because the Nitro is not really intended for off-road use.

Dodge’s midsize SUV is derived from the Jeep Liberty, and it squares off against competitors such as the Toyota RAV4, Ford Escape and Honda CR-V. It feels more like a truck compared to the Toyota, Honda and Ford.

The Nitro is more than a reskinned Jeep. Its 108.8-inch wheelbase is considerably longer than that of the Jeep, although the Nitro and Liberty have almost identical passenger space. The Nitro’s cargo space is slightly larger than that of the Liberty.

There are two engines: a 3.7-liter V-6 that pumps out 210 horsepower, and a 4.0-liter V-6 that is rated at 260 horsepower. Both engines are now equipped with a system that shuts off the flow of fuel when the engine is decelerating. This saves a bit of fuel and doesn’t detract from performance. The 3.7 has a four-speed automatic transmission and the 4.0 has a five-speed automatic.

Dodge has dropped the SE and SXT model designations in exchange for lifestyle packages named Heat, Detonator and Shock. The Heat starts at $21,590. The Detonator receives the 4.0-liter engine, and prices begin at $25,750. The Shock adds 20-inch wheels, and its base price is $26,750. An all-wheel-drive Shock starts at $28,410.

The test car was equipped with the 4.0-liter engine, and while it performed adequately, its fuel mileage is rated at 16 miles per gallon in the city and 20 on the highway. That is considerably lower than most of its competitors.

The SXT’s performance suspension is tuned for responsive handling, and it delivered a ride that was decidedly firm and sometimes jarring. The optional 20-inch wheels and low-profile tires that look so good also contribute to the ride harshness.

The Nitro is available with rear-wheel or four-wheel drive. The four-wheel-drive model drives the rear wheels until you need extra traction. Four-wheel drive is selected with a switch on the console. The system then sends equal power to the front and rear wheels.

Traction control, anti-lock brakes, vehicle stability control and brake assist are standard. The stability control system also helps mitigate rollovers.

The Nitro’s cabin is attractive and functional although the interior textures tend to be hard and plain. The instrument panel has three round gauge pods trimmed with brushed silver accents. The center console can accommodate gadgets such as cell phones and PDAs.

The rear seat folds forward to create a flat load floor, and the front passenger seatback can also be folded forward to swallow long items such as a stepladder.

One handy option is a built-in 30-gigabyte hard disk that is part of the navigation and audio system. This unit can be controlled with voice commands. The hard disk can hold up to 4,250 songs. Users can also record voice memos, download photos or copy music from a CD, DVD or any device with a USB port.

The optional Sirius satellite radio has real-time traffic reports and can show alternate routes on the navigation screen.

All Nitro radios have input jacks for MP3 music players.

Price

The base price of the test car was $28,410. Standard equipment includes heated leather seats, navigation system with a 30-gigabyte hard drive, 20-inch chrome wheels, power sunroof and an engine block heater. Options of the chrome accent group and trailer tow package brought the sticker price to $30,940.

Warranty

Three years or 36,000 miles with a five-year, or 100,000-mile powertrain warranty.

New Lifestyle Package Boost 2011 Dodge Nitro Appeal and Quality

New for 2011, the Dodge Nitro Heat 4.0 lifestyle package joins the Detonator, Shock and Heat models that arrived on the scene in 2010. The new Nitro Heat 4.0 comes standard with a five-speed automatic transmission, standard Uconnect®Phone and an upgraded eight-speaker sound system. Of course the Heat 4.0 would not be complete without the powerful 4.0-liter V-6 engine as standard equipment. The all-aluminum 4.0-liter overhead cam V-6 engine delivers 260 horsepower (194 kW) and 265 lb.-ft. (359 N•m) of torque.

The all-new Dodge Nitro lineup was revised and renamed in 2010, offering new exterior and interior styling features. These newly repackaged models – Heat, Detonator and Shock along with the Heat 4.o Lifestyle Package – provide Nitro customers with more standard content and style, including 20-in. aluminum wheels, sunscreen glass and performance suspension paint. For 2011, select models feature upgraded interiors with new cloth and leather with premium colored stitching. Detonator and Shock are now tattooed with Dodge Brand’s signature racing stripes.

The Dodge Nitro Heat features 20-in. aluminum wheels, body color grille with bright billets, sunscreen glass and performance suspension. The quality-proven 3.7-liter V-6 engine delivers 210 horsepower (157 kW) and 235 lb.-ft. (319 N•m) of torque and is available in 4x2 and 4x4 models.

Detonator packs a punch with 23 percent more horsepower and 12 percent more torque than the smaller V-6 offering. Detonator shares its powertrain with Heat 4.0, including the aluminum 4.0-liter overhead cam V-6 engine and five-speed automatic transmission. The Detonator package also features 20-in. polished aluminum wheels, nine premium speakers with subwoofer, remote start and Parksense® rear park assist system.

The Dodge Nitro Shock is fully loaded and with the new polished 20-in. aluminum premium-painted wheels, heated leather seats and a sunroof along with the 4.0-liter overhead cam V-6 engine and five-speed automatic transmission. The Shock has an intense, nine speaker including subwoofer audio system, remote start and Parksense® rear park assist system. The 2011 Dodge Nitro lineup is now available in nine exterior colors, including new for 2011 Bright White Clear Coat, Blackberry Pearl Coat, Toxic Orange Pearl Coat and Redline Two Coat Pearl.

The 2011 Nitro picture released by Chrysler looks to be the same as the 2010 "Spring" edition. Time will tell if there are any additional changes and we will report them here.

Dodge Nitro Gets 2011 MY Updates

STORY HIGHLIGHTS:

* New equipment level: Heat 4.0 Lifestyle Package
* All models get standard 20 inch rims
* Range of exterior colors now offers more choices

At the beginning of the current year, Dodge refreshed the Nitro range, renaming the three versions available into Heat, Detonator and Shock. The first is the entry level model, while the last is the range-topper, leaving the Detonator as the middle-of-the pack-choice.

Now, the Dodge Nitro has received a new trim level, as well as a few equipment updates for certain grades, as part of the 2011 model year changes.

The Heat, Detonator and Shock equipment levels are now accompanied by the Heat 4.0 Lifestyle Package. This uses a 4.0 liter V6 powerplant delivering 260 hp and a maximum torque of 25 lb-ft (359 Nm) and is mated to a five speed manual gearbox. It comes with the equipment list of the Heat grade, adding Uconnect Phone and a premium sound system that uses eight speakers to deliver a top quality audio experience.

All Nitro models belonging to the 2011 model year will get standard 20 inch alloy rims, as well as a monochromatic finish for the interior. Certain models will receive new materials for the interior, as well as a special leather finish that comes with contrasting stitching. The range of exterior colors has also been upgraded. This now includes Bright White Clear Coat, Blackberry Pearl Coat, Toxic Orange Pearl Coat and Redline Two Coat.

In addition to that, the Detonator and Shock versions now come with racing stripes on the hood and front fenders. These are Dodge’s new signature and offer the vehicles a more distinct look, also giving them a sporty aura.

Rick,

Any news on the Dodge Nitro models for Canada in 2011?

Ian2
They have issued some press releases on other 2011 models and I posted them, but so far nothing on the new Nitro. Never have understood why they can't be the same as the US since they are all built here, but they (thus far) are NOT the same. Check back and when I find some info will post it, if they issue a press release. Sorry

Dodge Nitro Canada 2011

Hi Rick,

Just got off the phone with Chrysler Canada regarding the 2011 Dodge Nitros,
the girl was most helpful but unfortunately did not have much information.

She tried to find out and was able to tell me that there would be Sxt model with 20 inch wheels and a 4 litre engine. three body colors, bright white - blackberry and cherry red but no orange.

I asked her if I crossed the border to purchase a Nitro there and imported it to Canada would the warranty apply and she said she does not work with warranties but her understanding was that the warranty would not be valid in Canada.

So there we have it, I guess I just have to be patient and see what becomes available. Thanks Rick.

Thanks for your info and I too found this same info from Canada "Online" concerning the 2011 Nitro, but thought it was just 2010 specks updated. Since here in the US the SXT and the 3.7 engine is no longer available it is still shown as options in Canada for 2011. Question is Why? Good Luck and thanks again for for sharing.

As of TODAY the Canada's 2011 NITRO Site is up and just like in 2010 the only model available is the SXT. It does show the new 2011 exterior colors and you can add them on to view! Lots of info that you may already know, however.
