Dodge among top finishers in NASCAR season opener

Posted Monday, Feb 9, 2009, 4:11 pm in Motorsports

Three Dodge Charger drivers finished among the top 10 in Saturday night’s season-opening NASCAR Sprint Cup event—the Budweiser Shootout at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona, Fla.

Kevin Harvick (Chevrolet) won the race, pulling ahead of Jamie McMurray (Ford) on the last lap to earn the win. The victory does not deliver any points for Harvick, as the Sprint Cup Series does not officially begin until this weekend’s Daytona 500 race at the same Daytona track.

With 28 cars in the field, (the largest ever to start the race), fans saw 14 different leaders, 23 lead changes and eight cautions, all race records. AJ Allmendinger topped all Dodge drivers by finishing fifth in his first run in the No. 44 Richard Petty Motorsports Dodge. Dodge drivers Kasey Kahne finished sixth and Kurt Busch ninth.

Other Dodge finishers were David Stremme (16th), Elliott Sadler (21st), Reed Sorenson (23rd) and Robby Gordon (27th).
