Update

UPDATE

10/27/2014

I noticed that my right front roof rail had become loose over time and decided to inspect the front mounting stud for tightness. Yes it was tight but the rail had a lot of flex that over time could break the rail under the nut. I decided to remove the mounting nut and install two large washers under it and remount. Sure enough that corrected the looseness. Not sure why a washer was not installed in the first place or at least under this modification? Anyway it corrected my issue and was a very simple. Guess the two sided tape installed at the front of the rail might have failed, but just adding a washer (large) over the stud under the nut has tighten up the front of the rail.

You might want to check both front roof rails of your Nitro for looseness too (you can usually hear noise from the vibrations too) since if not corrected I could see them breaking under the mounting nut. In that case it would not be a simple repair!

Good Luck and enjoy your Nitro!:)

After my rails let loose at the front ends, I've removed them completely and cut the studs down to the plastic inserts. If you have this happen to you I would recommend that, while doing the repair, you lift the rail and inspect the body paintwork at the mounting studs. Mine had extensive rust at the studs. This would eventually spread due to electrolytic corrosion.

2008 with same issue

2008 Nitro (137K) - I've dealt with this issue for almost 6 years(09-10). When it originally occurred, the dealer told me it was due to the type of gas(too much ethanol in the fuel) and that it sticks, but they wouldn't repair it. I was getting a ' slight evap leak ' code last summer(2015), so I took it in and they said they found a cracked hose(repaired, fixed code). Getting the same code now, and they say it needs a new filler tube and new gas cap for $540.00. My question - Can the over-fill spill issue cause the evap code? If so, should I push to have this covered under the 'lifetime warranty' for the spill issue? This is my first post, so pardon any errors in the posting location, please. Thanks!!

In my opinion it is clear that to solve your issue you need a replacement tank just like many others including myself, were provided at no charge. There is a test the Dealership can and should perform to prove the tank is defective. Hopefully they should replace your tank under warranty since they could prove this is an ongoing issue with your Nitro and they will even make some money from Chrysler doing so. (not as much if you would pay full list for parts & labor however) Let us know how it all works out for you. GOOD LUCK

You can always call Chrysler too.

Thanks for the quick reply, Rick -

I actually just returned from the dealership(they're ordering the parts). They're replacing the tank, but still requiring me to pay for the fill-tube and new gascap(I don't have a problem paying for the cap, but it seems the fill-tube would be part of the tank?). I'll still contact Chrysler and see if I can receive reimbursement for the tube and labor. Seems to me, if they're dropping the tank anyway, the fill tube replacement should not be two hours of labor. Other than an alternator, I have had no other issues with my 08 SLT, so I am very happy with the vehicle. Thanks again, and I'll let y'all know what response I receive from Chrysler. BTW, my other vehicle is an 08 Sebring convertible(second owner, 80K).

Thanks to all the posts here, I was able to understand why fuel was shooting back out at me and quickly got an appointment booked. I have this issue and confirmed the lifetime warranty at a Canadian dealership. Have an appointment in a few weeks for them to check and replace. We'll see what other costs they try and throw in on me while doing it.

SO after reading this thread, I believe this is exactly what is happening with my 2011 Nitro. If I cant get the dealership to replace the tank, what parts am I going to need to do it myself? I am more than capable of doing the job myself, I just dont want to have to pay for it, since it seems to be an ongoing issue with the Nitros.

Thanks
Andrew

Welcome Ratt

You would not want to pay for a expensive plastic new tank that includes the check valve built in and that is what it would take (at least in my case). There is a a simple test the Dealership can perform to justify replacing the tank under warranty. Have they performed that? If not demand that they do. Even if your tank would pass the test should be covered by warranty maybe.

$625.60

Sorry Ratt but after reading my post that "Life-Time" Warranty was only on 2007-2008 Nitro.

Thanks for the info. It's worth a shot trying. I read somewhere that some 2011s have had the same issue, and it sounds like the tanks in question were left overs from the 2007 run. I'm kind of curious what the cure date on my current tank is. It "should" be molded into the plastic somewhere.

I'm going to go hang out at the dealer where I bought my Nitro on Saturday and talk to the service people. See if I can work some magic
