Fiat Chrysler recalls spark calls for greater auto oversight


Alleged violations of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act by Fiat Chrysler have sparked fresh calls for the Obama administration to increase oversight of the American auto industry.

Fiat was recently fined $105 million by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for allegedly failing to properly notify drivers, car dealerships and federal regulators about recalls, as required by a 1966 law. The company was also accused of neglecting to repair cars in a timely fashion.

A pair of Democratic senators is pushing the agency to increase requirements for all U.S. auto companies to report issues involving recalled car parts, citing the Fiat problems and other recent recalls at auto companies like General Motors and Takata.

"Recently, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) was found to have violated the Motor Vehicle Safety Act in the way it executed the 23 vehicle safety recalls covering more than 11 defective vehicles," Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) and Ed Markey (D-Mass.) wrote in a letter to NHTSA Administrator Mark Rosekind.
