Fiat extends Chrysler Sebring, Dodge Avenger lifecycle to 2012; 8 other Chrysler products in line for refresh by 2011

September28

The Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Avenger have struggled to find buyers in the immensely competitive mid-size sedan segment but, with little in the pipeline, Fiat-owned Chrysler has decided to delay plans to kill the four-door twins, extending production until at least 2012.

Per Chrysler’s previous plans – while still under the control of Cerberus Capital Management – the Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Avenger were set to end production in 2010. However, with virtually nothing in the pipeline to replace the slow-selling sedans, Fiat has decided to extend the vehicles’ lifecycles until at least 2012.

In order to keep the mid-sizers relevant until 2012 – and possibly beyond — Fiat is planning updates for both vehicles, according to Automotive News. The Avenger is in line for a more moderate refresh and should be on the market by sometime next year. The Sebring’s reworking will be much more thorough, pushing its launch date back until 2011.

Fiat will reportedly adopt a similar refresh schedule for several other Chrysler products, including the Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan minivans; Dodge Journey and Caliber; Jeep Compass and Patriot, and even the lame-duck Chrysler PT Cruiser. The refreshes will be complete by 2011, with a new, Fiat-based lineup set to hit the market by 2012 or 2013.
