Ford Limits Shelby GT500 Sales to 5,500 Units

Jul 16, 2010

In order to maintain exclusivity, Ford has announced that sales of the 2011 Shelby GT500 will be limited to 5,500 units. Turns out that 10 added horsepower and an aluminum engine block is bringing customers into Ford showrooms in search of owning there very own 2011 GT500.

As Jalopnik states, “Get to the dealer quick because they're selling too fast; 3,300 units already sold.”

The quick take rate could make it very possible that all 2011 GT500s are sold before the calendar reaches 2011, given the fact that it there is still almost a third of the year left in 2010.

Automobile Magazine, however, is quick to note what might be dragging customers in; “The Cobra-badged GT500 does 0-60 mph in 4.2 seconds, and the car also comes equipped with a new 2.75-inch exhaust system, brake cooling, HID headlights, MyKey, and an optional SVT Performance Package with new wheels, stickier tires, numerically higher rear axle for more torque, and stiffer dampers and springs.”

Although the GT500 no doubt possesses an allure with its supercharged whine and Shelby namesake missing out on ordering one may leave you better off. With 412 horsepower and a base price nearly $20,000 less, the Mustang GT may not be as rare as the GT500, but it will keep up with most performance vehicles and offer the benefit of 26 mpg on the highway.
