Ford wants Sync patents from inventor

Posted Wednesday, Sep 16, 2009, 12:53 pm in Employee News

Joseph Berry, a man Ford once called “a lead architect” of Sync, has left the company, raising serious questions about who owns intellectual property vital to the voice-controlled infotainment system, says a report in the Detroit News.

Ford tried to get the telematics expert to sign off on several patents after he was terminated for unknown reasons in July. Berry says he is “happy to license” the technology to Ford, but the company has yet to respond, the story said. If an agreement is not reached, Ford could be forced to abandon key features of Sync.

According to the Detroit News, Sync has been moving metal for Ford since its 2007 introduction. Cars and trucks equipped with the system sell twice as fast as vehicles without it, the story said. (The Detroit News)

Dumb move on Ford's part terminating this guy!
