Fusion’s jump to No. 3 lifts Ford confidence

In a month when industry sales remained dismal, the strong 26 percent June sales increase for the Ford Fusion is giving Ford confidence that efforts to revamp its car lineup are on the right track, the Detroit Free Press reported.

In June, the Fusion was the third-best-selling mid-size car after the Toyota Camry and the Honda Accord, according to Autodata Corp. It was also the seventh-best-selling car or truck on the market, the Free Press said.

U.S. consumers have purchased 85,014 Fusion sedans so far this year, compared with 131,043 Accord and 150,242 Camry sedans, the paper said. But with both of those Japanese models posting declines of more than 35 percent so far this year, Fusion is making big gains in the car market, the story said.

Ford has achieved its sales success without resorting to big incentives, Jesse Toprak, an automotive analyst for the consumer automotive Web site, told the paper. Fords said Fusion buyers are either picking the higher priced hybrid version or versions with multiple options. The result: The average transaction price is about $1,800 higher than the prior model Fusion, the story said. (Detroit Free Press)
