Transmission plant could come to Tipton, Indiana

Tipton hopes for new jobs

Kevin Rader/Eyewitness News

Tipton County - Buy it and it will come. That is what some residents are hoping will happen after 145 acres in Tipton County was purchased by Getrag, a German transmission company.

The land was bought along highways 31 and 28 for $3.4 million and would likely be used for a manufacturing plant.

If Indiana and Getrag reach a deal, Hoosiers could expect around 1,200 jobs to come to Tipton.

Gov. Mitch Daniels met with Getrag officials Tuesday morning in Germany after meeting with Dr. Deiter Zetsche, chairman of DaimlerChrysler on Monday.

"It is well known that Chrysler and Getrag are in discussions about a new transmission plant," said Daniels. "Getrag is taking preliminary steps to be ready, but until there is an agreement between Chrysler and Getrag, this is not a done deal."

While some residents argue Indiana needs more manufacturing jobs, others worry bringing a plant to Tipton could raise taxes.

"We just got hit by a ton of property taxes the way it is around here now," said Tipton resident Bob Yeary.

Others are excited to see what a new plant could do for local businesses.

"I think it is great for Tipton County," said Jeanne Brackins, owner of Jean's Flower's in Tipton for 31 years. "Be more jobs, help the housing market, good for retail market in general; more people coming to town, new additions being built. I can just see lots of positives."
