GM Recall Alert: Terrain, Equinox and Corvette
Dec. 29, 2009

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued recalls for several vehicles produced by General Motors. One concerns platform-mates GMC Terrain and Chevrolet Equinox, making it the first recall for the relatively new models.

GM is recalling 59,031 Terrain and Equinox vehicles due to an unspecified fault in the HVAC system’s software. The potential fault can cause the heating, air conditioning, defroster, radio control, and panel backlighting to become inoperative. According to the recall notice, “Driving without a functioning defrost system can decrease your visibility under certain driving conditions and could result in a crash without warning.”

Starting in January, Chevrolet and GMC dealers will replace the computer module in the center console instrument panel free of charge.

Meanwhile, NHTSA has also issued a recall affecting 22,000 targa-top Corvette Z06 models from model years 2005 through 2007. The recall involves a faulty adhesive that can cause roof panels to separate from the frame and fly off the vehicle.

According to the recall notice, symptoms may include a snapping noise when driving over bumps, wind noise, poor roof panel fit, water leakage on the headliner or roof panel movement when a door is closed. If the roof panel detaches while driving, “it could strike a following vehicle and cause injury and/or property damage.

A previous recall in 2006 for more than 30,000 Corvettes failed to fix the problem. According to the Detroit News, “GM said the problem was due to inadequate bonding strength, following reports of at least 11 roof separations. GM's 2006 fix was to insert adhesive foam -- and, if necessary, replacement of the roof.”

However, the Detroit News adds that GM later found “108 claims of roof separation after the foam was added in the attempt to fix the problem. GM spokesman Alan Adler said there are no reports of injuries as a result.” This time around, GM will replace the roof panels free of charge beginning in January.
