NHTSA Investigates Ford Windstar and Chevy Corvette

Posted: May. 18, 2010

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened formal investigations of the Ford Windstar van and the Chevrolet Corvette. The two investigations are not related.

The Windstar investigation involves 900,000 models and is a result of 234 complaints received by NHTSA. The complaints involve rear axles fracturing in 1999-2003 models.

“While a snapped axle can result in loss of vehicle control, there have been reports of only two minor crashes, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on its Web site,” writes Automotive News.

Both investigations are in the preliminary stages. If NHTSA finds cause, both can result in a safety recall. Ford discontinued the Windstar in 2007, but will replace rear axles free of charge in the event of a safety recall.

However, USA Today notes, “NHTSA seldom orders a recall. Either an investigation shows one is not warranted, or the automaker voluntarily recalls the vehicles.”

NHTSA is also investigating the Chevrolet Corvette after receiving 30 complaints from consumers about leaky fuel tanks. The investigation involves 33,000 2004 Corvettes.

“The Corvette has two fuel tanks; in 12 reports, a fuel tank was replaced or identified as the source of the leak,” says the Detroit News.

No injuries or accidents have been linked to the Corvette defect, according to Left Lane News.
