Hours after Chrysler LLC yesterday announced it was cutting 8,500 to 10,000 factory jobs and 1,000 salaried positions, the union leader overseeing the Toledo Jeep Assembly complex was disappointed.

The affected workers make the Jeep Liberty and Dodge Nitro. Sales of the former are off 34 percent this year and sales of the latter haven’t soared.

The company shut down the factory making the Liberty and Nitro last month to make adjustments to produce more of the former and fewer of the latter.

The Nitros hadn’t been selling well, a company spokesman said. Production began in August, 2006.

So far this year, 61,680 models have been sold.

In contrast, sales of the redesigned Liberty have slumped. Sales plunged 41 percent last month compared to one year ago and are down 34 percent for the year, with 75,351 sales.

Sales of the Wrangler, made at neighboring factories which have no third shifts, rose 8 percent last month from a year ago and are up 62 percent for the year, at 101,903. The vehicle was redesigned last year and has a popular four-door version.
