Jeep: new diesels for Europe
September 23rd, 2010

Today, Jeep launched two new diesel engines for cars sold outside North America — a 2.2 liter for the Compass and Patriot, and a 2.8 for the Cherokee (Liberty), Wrangler, and Wrangler Unlimited.

The 2.8 liter engine boosts power 13% to 200 hp DIN (147 kW) at 3,600 rpm, with 410 Nm of torque from 2,000 – 3,200 rpm with the six-speed manual transmission — 460 Nm from 1,600 to 2,600 rpm with the Mercedes five-speed automatic, which is new for Wrangler. It has a DOHC design with belt drive, 1800-bar common rail injection with piezo injectors, variable geometry turbocharger (á la Turbo IV), electronic swirl control, particulate filter, and other improvements over the prior diesel engine.

The 2.2 liter diesel boosts power to 163 hp DIN (120 kW) from 3,600-4,200 rpm, and torque to 320 Nm at 1,400-3,600 rpm, a 16% horsepower increase over the prior 2.0 liter. Acceleration is 12% quicker, towing capacity is up to 2,000 kg, and gas mileage is 6.6 l/100km (combined) for 786 km between tops. This engine is also DOHC, with a 2,000-bar common rail injection system, five injection events per combustion, two balance shafts, variable geometry turbo, switchable piston cooling, and standard filter.

Both diesels meet Euro V emissions standards.

The Wrangler and Unlimited will also feature fuel-saving Start/Stop engine technology, a new interior and boy color, and a removable hard top. Start/Stop technology shuts the engine when the vehicle is stopped, in neutral, with the clutch released; it restarts automatically when the clutch pedal is pressed. The system can be shut off from the dashboard; it requires an upgraded starter and alternator. It increases gas mileage by up to 13% in the Wrangler.

Jeep also launched the Grand Cherokee in Europe.
