Looking For Hefty Crossover Rebates? Look To Jeep

Jan 22, 2015

Automakers threw lots of cash on the hood last month to spur year-end new-vehicle sales, but CarsDirect says no automaker did it more extensively or successfully than Jeep.

With incentives totaling nearly 20 percent of its manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP), the 2014 Jeep Patriot carried the biggest discounts in the crossover class--and the 2015 model wasn't far behind, at 17 percent.

The big spending isn't limited to the Patriot, either. Many of the most-discounted vehicles last month were Jeeps--and Fiat Chrysler products in general. The National Automobile Dealers Association says incentive spending by the newly merged company was up by more than 31 percent last month, outstripping domestic rivals General Motors and Ford.

Crossovers have been a quick-growing segment for a few years, and automakers have kept up with interest with new products and lots of shopping incentives.

The Patriot and its sister vehicle, the Compass, are also some of the oldest products in the Jeep lineup, and account for thousands of fleet sales each year. Heavy discounts are expected to continue until Fiat Chrysler replaces the compact crossovers with new vehicles sometime after 2016.

Fiat Chrysler's Dodge brand is also piling on incentives, particularly on its Journey and Grand Caravan models, while Ford is slowing deals now that it's moved most of its 2014 Escape crossovers off dealer lots.
